    Another thoroughly useful (and at the very least mildly entertaining ;) review. In particular it is helpful, even if frustrating, to hear of the poor manual focus feel on this and the other new LM Fuji lenses. This is a super important point you guys have raised. However I don't shoot video at all yet it is the fact that I am a landscape photographer, with my XT4 permanently switched to manual focus mode, that makes this such a deal breaker - maybe you could mention this alongside your comments regarding videography/manual focus?!

  • @professionalpotato4764

    @professionalpotato4764

    2 жыл бұрын

    Is manual focus for landscape photography important? Pretty much all landscapes are shot at f/8 or f/11 right? Wouldn't everything in infinity be in focus regardless of manual of AF-S?

  • @itsmrjack_

    @itsmrjack_

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@professionalpotato4764 yes often a landscape shot is taken at infinity, but the exact infinity focus point on a lens can change due to temperature and pressure differences, so it is usually wise to check manually. However, more pertinently for my work, I do also take plenty of 'landscape' shots at closer range, i.e. not at infinity. For these kinds of shots the object in focus may be a part of a tree or other foliage that is hard to isolate using autofocus, but very easy using manual focus with magnification. The jumpy manual focus feel of some autofocus lenses is a royal pain in the *** for these kinds of situations. Sanity check: I know that I am not the only photographer who often shoots in this way ;)

  • @professionalpotato4764

    @professionalpotato4764

    @@itsmrjack_ Ahhh I see, that's interesting to learn about. And yes I do agree that regardless of use case, lenses with jumpy manual focus rings are a massive pain. I kinda wish lenses these days had a mechanically coupled ring instead of focus by wire.

    Going back through some of my old photos, the original 23mm has taken some of my best shots. For my tastes, it’s really not that slow and is incredibly sharp. Close focus is a bit of a let down, but that’s it. One of Fuji best lenses. Still great they are remaking so many, as the originals drop in price - so others can enjoy the optics that made Fuji so well loved.

    You’ll really regret selling the 16mm - it’s a beast, such a great lens and you’ll miss those cinematic wide but shallow shots! I have the 16, the 56 and the older 23. The 23, despite is downfalls is still by far my favourite. Such a natural feeling focal length. Wide enough to set the scene, but still looks natural. When it nails focus, it’s incredible. But it misses a lot, it’s slow and noisy, and not weather-sealed… if this new one solved those issues whilst still keeping the originals lovely characteristics then I’m sooooold. Can’t wait to get my hands on one, but can’t bring myself to sell the 16 or 56 to do it! Haha

    I watched an older video on lumix 70-300 where you said it did not resolve enough for higher MP cameras. Should this distinction be part of a chart, where a class of lenses are defined as the cameras they can resolve to? Just looking at price and other videos about the lens mentioned above does not explain this. It is a testament to the immaturity of the youtube scene. Compare it to overgaards video on the S1R and SL2 where he compates old lenses to new lenses on new cameras. Best regards

    I’m excited about this lens and have it on pre-order. Having said that, I have a suggestion or request. Could you create an episode comparing current high end full frame combinations (such as an SL2 with an SL Summicron) with the GFX 50S II and GFX 100/100S and lens? I say “and” because I am also curious how the 50MP and 102MP versions compare since they are using the same size sensor and thus reducing the pixel size. My basic question is whether high end lenses, such as the SL Summicron line, designed to resolve well beyond 100MP, make up for the somewhat smaller sensors in full frame systems. I know it is largely a question of the viewer’s impression, and I would love to hear your discussion.

    Seriously, i do love the old, original Fujinon XF 23/1.4 R, for 400 bucks incl. 1 year warranty via camera shop, A grade, like new in original box & papers. Pro - character lens - focus clutch - the well known 35mm focal length FoV, one lens to shoot it all - metal build quality & great design - not being too big, too huge Con - no WR, hence weathersealing - no lens for pixel poopers, err, -peepers

    When I first got my x100t I was super excited because of the reviews but soon realized I hated using it because of the 35mm FOV which I wasn't used to whatsoever. After a few months I began to like the x100 for what it could do instead of hating it for what it couldn't and now 35mm is my most used focal length. That being said I think people should realize that when most photographers say "Oh I love my 35mm" they are talking about a full frame 35mm 1.4 (sigma/canon/nikon/sony) which provides an awesome "wide + shallow depth of field" look. (Not saying there are no good 35mm eq for micro 4/3 or APS-C)

    Generally speaking, the best image quality comes from the largest sensors. Fuji also sells medium format cameras that have amazing quality, but that comes at a cost. There's a lot more that goes into a purchase decision. What's the right balance of cost, size/weight, and image quality? I think Fuji has a great formula here, but everyone's needs are different. Modern full frame cameras will have better image quality than this, but by how much? Is that worth carrying bigger, heavier, and more expensive lenses? What about features that make it easier to get the shot? What about video? Menu systems? That's why Chris and Jordan often end up asking, "Who is this camera for?'

  • @amaitra

    @amaitra

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@danieldougan269 seemingly, the Fuji sensors are all designed by Sony - so how can they be "better"? It is not just the size but the ability of each pixel. Just having more is not necessarily better. GFX 100 and Sony 60M are "likely" the same sensor technology. The difference is likely in the lens and how fuji interprets the sensor data. Seemingly they are better at interpreting the sensor data than Sony themselves! Of course perhaps better lens too. Usually when this happens, it is because the actual component comes from a different source - not so uncommon e.g. google maps interprets motion sensors in iPhone better than Apple can ;-)

    I have both lenses with this feature, the 23mm as well as the 16mm and I think it's more of an annoyance. You knock back the ring too easily in your bag or when carrying the camera and as most other lenses and X100 variants dont have this feature I often use the switch on the camera first just to realize I should have pulled back that ring. In the end Fuji must have thought the same and is dropping this feature from their lineup for good.

    @@VariTimo There already is an on-off switch on every body and the redundancy creates more trouble than it is helpful. Just skip that. True that the Fuji primes needed a bit of “age makeover” and Fuji seems to be addressing a lot of the complaints about the “old” lenses. More relevant perhaps is that they are improving optical quality to have a reasonable amount of optics to fully benefit from the upgrade in sensor that is forthcoming in 2022. Would you know which lenses of the recent crop can actually fully support the 40 (43)MP sensor that should go into the H2?

    I bought the Viltrox 23/1.4 hoping it would outperform Fuji or would be close to it, but no. It's sharp in the center and then gets mushy very fast, it's almost like gaussian blur.
