Fujifilm sensors are talked about a lot, especially the X-Trans sensors. However, in their cheaper cameras Fujifilm use the Bayer sensor, which is apparently cheaper to make and faster to process. So, in this short video I compare the sensors by taking a selection of photographs using the same lens to see if there is much of a difference.
I use the Fujifilm X-A5 and the Fujifilm X-E2 to compare the X-Trans sensor to the Bayer Sensor.
This is a fun video, and non scientific.

X-Trans seems like, rather than fight the noise coming through the sensor, they embrace it and find a way to make it look natural the way it had on film. Which may be why the Bayer sensor looks cleaner and more clinical. I’d be interested to take a peak behind the scenes at Fuji and find out if they took this into account while going through design for their X-Trans sensors. It could also be why each generation looks so different to the last for the x-trans sensors specifically. And why we aren’t able to perfectly recreate the same custom film sims no matter what generation it’s on.

I’ve had both types of Fuji sensor. With a few simple edits photos from both can be made to look identical. Shoot with whatever makes you feel good and don’t worry about the sensor.

Interesting comparison, I have a slight preference for the X-Trans but feel that a colour temperature/white balance tweak to the Bayer results would level the playing field 👍😀

Hi Chris. The main diference, in some tech tests I've made, over the beautiful warm tone in X-trans sensor, appears when we need to push the dark areas in high ISO. Because the construction, the B sensor will shows lines of hard noise, and, otherwise, the X Sensor will shows the noise in almost organic disposition. I really believe, because this tech aspect, the X-Trans looks much more analogical than B sensors. Anyway... I'm appreciating all of your videos. Let's go ahead, shooting and being happy! 😉

Interesting. The Bayer is 24mpx and the 24mpx Xtrans 3 is slightly cleaner and more clinical than the 16mpx used here too. You can get good results from any of them, as long as you get out and use them, rather than debate too long over which one to take with you. ;)

Thanks for your effort...I love your videos and the way you perceive photography. I have many fuji cameras and my conclusion is the bayer is actually sharper regardless of the low bypass filter effect. Yes, there is a slight blue tint coming from bayer but I am not exactly sure it is the sensor or processing engine...but it can easily be solved by carefully adjusting the white balance map resulting in an almost indistinquishable image from the bayer sensor...IMHO only.

Interesting comparison. I have a Nikon D7500 (bayer) & a Fujifilm X-S10 (x-trans 4) and did some JPEG image comparisons using the standard/provia picture profile and White Balance set to the same Kelvin values; the colours on both looks reasonably accurate and faithful, the Nikon seemed more contrasty and a bit sharper and detailed despite the lower 21MP (compared to the 26MP on the X-S10). The Nikon also shot at a higher shutter speed constantly throughout the tests despite all settings being equal (ISO 200, Aperture at F5.6) even though images were exposed the same. Conclusion; both cameras produce high quality images!

I agree. The x-trans sensor is warmer. The bayer is good, but colder with a more digital feel. I was in the Cotswolds shooting with the XA-1 with the bayer filter. Great results and I’m happy with this little gem of a camera. I’m used to shooting XE1 and XE2, but once I’ve geeked them in PS or Lightroom, they look great. I used to shoot Fuji film stock for weddings back in the 90’s. Fujifilm have just got it right. I want small mirrorless cameras and Fuji lens and bodies are just right for me.

When you compare to different cameras you have to tweak them to look the same. You should tweak the A5 and see if you could make it look just the same as the E2, and if not you have to figure out why that is not possible. There are lots of filters you can run the A5 images through.

Bayer is cheaper and easier to make, X-trans is more complicated and more expensive but right at the top is the Foveon sensor which, sadly, only Sigma experimented with some years ago.

Thanks Chris, I love both the trans and Bayer sensors. Ive had some great results from by old X100. Especially montotone at night, it has such a filmic quality. I often use and recommend the X30 it has a trans sensor, incredibly sharp for a 12 mp. Such fun to use too with its manual zoom lens. If you can find one, try it out. The super macro mode is very nice too. Thanks for doing this comparison. I love Littlehampton brings back so many memories of my childhood. It was better then now rather yuppyish.

With 12 or 16MP the X-Trans made a huge difference as compared to a DSLR but the higher the resolution the more problems you have and the less advantageous they become and that's why Fuji will probably give up producing them in the future. As for me the X100's and X-Pro1's sensors are extraordinary because they're based on film but one is a Bayer sensor and the other one is the first X-Trans sensor. The revolution, in my opinion, was to get such high image quality in such small and light bodies combined with such compact and exceptionally good lenses. Now that's what Leica is about from day one but Fuji cameras have an autofocus and they're affordable. It changed my life and I'm so thankful. Anyway thanks for sharing your opinion and great images

Good comparison, I like xtrans for color too. It would be interesting for me as a b&w shooter only, if you could compare monochrome vs monochrome(not across) from bayer and xtrans. I preferred the bayer vs xtrans 2 for monochrome years ago but never compared xtrans1 to the bayer for monochrome. X100 vs X-Pro1. Thanks again for doing all of these videos on the older Fuji’s, my wallet thanks you! John

Thank you for the comparison - yes, if you take the Raw files and look at them under the same conditions - e.g. manufacturer independent Adobe neutral profile - you clearly see the difference in colour rendering. And in dynamic range rendering. If you compare the different generations of the X-Trans, differences pop up there, too. In my eyes, the X-Trans II is most comfortable ... warmer than the other generations. But there are Bayer sensors out there (older ones, mostly) which I also like in that respect. I'm using both. Matter of taste?

The xtrans is said to spread colors more naturally than the bayer but if I'm not mistaken this would only be visible if you pixel peep. Because there's really no xtrans or bayer sensor, just a sensor with a colorfilter where colors are arranged in a bayer or xtrans pattern, the colorfilter is what allows the camera to assume a color picture from the black and white picture the sensor really sees (by checking where light hits the sensor, if it hits the sensor a lot where it knows the filter is blue, it assumes it's blue light etc) . The spread of colors in the filter (all this is really really small mind you) influence how colors are spread among the pixels on the sensor and rumor has it that for some types of picture , like conrasty areas, or particular colors this difference will be visible. Xtrans was made (again if I'm not mistaken) to reduce moiree) not to change the tone of the picture or anything like that.

Worms are the difference and depending on the manufacturer some have stronger or weaker anti-aliasing filters. Canon tends to have a stronger anti-aliasing filter in my estimation, the 5dsr not so much. It all depends on how tragic it will be if you get aliasing. Some say more megapixels helps to eliminate it, but it is kind of pattern dependent. I have noticed it only very very rarely in thousands of images, but I am not shooting clothes and such where patterns may occur, I think I have seen it in roofing tiles perhaps on a Lumix camera. But worms can be a problem for Fuji.

My son has a Bayer sensor Fuji Camera X-T100, I have an X-E3, same pixel count or thereabouts. I have to say, notwithstanding his photographic skill surpasses mine by an order of magnitude, but as other commenters have said the differences are subjective under most conditions. I prefer the X-Trans sensors, having also owned an X-Pro1 and X-M1, they do have that "something special" about them I just can't put my finger on.

Agree that the X-Trans sensors is the better choice BUT, can't you really just set up what colour sience you want to mimic anything in todays cameras, I have used the FujiXWeekly app where you have lots and lots of free dial in settings to change the outcome to whatever you like using my x-e3. So my question is can you take a raw picture taken with the Bayer sensor and change the color sience in Lightroom or any other software to exactly look like it's been taken with an X-Trans sensor ?

It's an interesting comparison, but to meaningfully judge the difference you would need to make sure you take the same pictures with the same lens and exactly the same settings, including white balance and film simulation and using a tripod. You did not talk about how you set the cameras, so not sure whether that actually happened.

I've had the XA1 (twice) and the XM1 (twice) and the XA3 plus XE1, XT1, XT10, XT20, XH1. There is no obvious visible difference. You can shoot certain subjects to emphasize certain traits in each sensor and then pixel peep at crazy magnifications to see any difference but most people wouldn't have a clue which was which in most cases. I'm a Fuji lover but the X trans sensor is overated and can be a pain in the butt when processing.

Due to the X Trans sensor having a larger number of green filters over its individual pixels it is capable of greater resolution with the same number pixels. A pixel with a blue filter over it cannot process light from the red end of the spectrum and vice versa. A pixel with a green filter over it can process light from either the blue or red ends of the spectrum. So in theory an X Trans sensor should give resolve more detail than a Bayer sensor with the same number of pixels. Some suggest you effectively lose upto 1/3 of the number of pixels available with a Bayer sensor, though I am not sure the maths here is quite right. However with today's high MP sensors, whether we can actually see the difference is another question. Looking at the images here, the daylight shots from the X Trans sensor is clearly warmer than the Bayer ones, but personally I can't see a real difference in the low light shots. To me this suggests a difference in the WB processing of the individual cameras, and which is better is down to individual taste and in any event WB can be tweaked to your taste either in camera or in post. This WB difference is evident even between X Trans 2 and X Trans 3 sensors ( I prefer the 1 version, so I use a custom WB on my X Trans 3 sensor camera). I do agree that X Trans images look more analogue than Bayer ones. On the other hand my Bayer sensored XF10 has more accurate colour rendition than my other Fuji cameras. Which is best overall? Neither. All my cameras Fuji, Pentax and Nikon produce very pleasing, if different, images. Which camera I chose at any given time to use is based on much more than the character of its image processing system.
