    I have both. I prefer the handling on the XT5, but the Nikon AF, low light and manual focus features are superb. I’m still undecided as to which is better for me. Lastly, I find the IBIS to be better on the Nikons.

    To be honest, if the nikon had been released a few years back I would have gone for it snce you can use it with the Sigma I-series prime lenses which are very compact, sharp, light, have aperture rings and look very beautiful (plus voigtlander, thypoch, etc). My only gripe with the nikon zf is the lack of a joystick and the stupid flippy screen (yes screw you video people =p). BTW the best thing about the zf besides IQ is the way MF works, it should become the standard in all new cameras regardless of brand!

    Zf for me. Works properly and with every vintage 35mm lens ever made without cropping them. Second reason it’s much more well made and feels much higher quality in hand. I loved the X-Pro 2 and owned it for four years. The later Fujifilm cameras are not as nice as the XT2/Xpro2 generation. The fujifilm pasm set up is easier to understand in the beginning, but the Zf layout is actually more powerful once you get used to it.

    Also I think Nikon should have removed the grip entirely, rather than the F3 style lip. I think the lip is confusing people on how to handle it. It needs to be handled like a Leica M or old SLR camera. None of them had grips - you hold them with your left hand. I’m happy Fuji moved away from the ugly grips with the XT line, since they have the XH now. But wish they could remove it entirely and make it nicer quality with a proper metal build.

    The one BIG problem with this comparison is the Zf has better capabilities in most ways than even the XH2/XH2s. As you mentioned it has the same processor & technologies as Z8/Z9 with slightly less capabilities in some ways, more in others. It only resembles the XT5 in looks / layout and with better build quality. You can also adapt any FF lens to the Zf, use 3D eye tracking with manual lenses and even give them autofocus capabilities with an adapter. This is HUGE. Literally any vintage lens on this camera will complete “the look” if that’s what you’re going for. Micro SD is as fast as SD, just keep it in camera to use as internal storage... and let’s be real, BOTH of these cameras need the extra grip lol. Personally I’m selling my XT-3 and 5 lenses for the Zf with 3 lenses (maybe 4) to do the same job, reducing my overall kit. Nikon has better wide / mid range zooms and smokes Fuji in telephoto options. The only reason to go with Fuji at this point is if you need an absolute minimal kit for street / travel / portraiture. Even then, F4 on FF provides the same DOF as f2.8 on APSC, so that may not even be true. Loved the Fuji for the past 5 years but it’s time to switch for me. Lost way too many great action / pet / wildlife shots and Fuji just can’t seem to catch up in that department. Also have no need / desire for 40 megapixel images eating up memory cards & RAM. Zf looks like the best value on the market right now. Nikon f1.8 lenses are just as good as Fuji f1.4/1.2 lenses at a lower cost and they’ll probably make more compact lenses to match this body… I sure am gonna miss those aperture rings tho. For now.

    Give the 40 a chance. Don’t bother with f2 … same issue as Fuji 23 f2 as it’s soft wide open. Z 40 at f4 to f7 (peaks in this range per Lenstip). 40 grows on you. I returned my first one. Now I have 2 copies. I actually returned the Z 50 1.8 as I use my 40 so much.

    Depends. Nikon Z lenses are all really big and heavy. They do not have any f4 lenses that rival the offering of Fujis f2.8 lenses, especially third party ones like the Sigma 10-18 or 18-50. Don't forget you get the same bokeh as 2.8 on APSC but you still lose a stop of light. They do have some nice zooms but they are often repackaged old Tamron lenses at double the price, Sony has superior zooms by a wide margin. The new 35 1.4 is super interesting though, even if it's a bit soft, shouldn't be a huge issue. Then the Zf has worse video capabilities, such as an 1.5 crop in 4k60, basically killing the 4k60 feature entirely. 6k30 & HD240 is also missing. I also disagree that you need an extra grip, the XT-5 grip is way better than the Zf, especially because it has that little body extension for your thumb on the back. And then you have the option (!) to use 40mp and crop a lot, thus saving more weight & money for lenses. If you want smaller sizes, you can adjust the size of the image at any time via the quick menu. So overall, I'm very tempted to get the Nikon, but the package as a compact hybrid camera isn't quite there yet, it probably needs a mark 2 and a good 3 years of lens development. If they make this smaller, add the 45mp sensor & proper video features, catch up on the ergonomics, and extend their new compact f1.4 and f2 line-ups, it will become really interesting.

    How long did you use the Nikon ZF? The battery is not that bad; you can take a lot more photos than the CIPA ratings say. I've been using both cameras for months. The IBIS on the ZF is better, and the lack of a joystick is not a problem because the ZF has so many autofocus options that you didn't talk about.

I use BBF to stick/track in 3D, basic square and Auto Area with eye detect is as good as the A7IV. Sitting in a bagel shop with my boys today was so nice to just toss in AF-C/Auto area with eye detect and just compose with green square locking on an eye. Goofing around in a dark room with AF-C .. it will work its ass off to focus in VERY low light.. just keeps trying and often gets it.

    If you hold the ZF properly it’s okay without the grip. You have to hold it like a film camera, middle finger parallel with the grip line, other hand under the lens. The small rig grip definitely helps but with big glass, it’s certainly challenging. Also, ZF manual focus tools when adapting glass is far superior on the ZF. Also provides a more retro aesthetic.

My biggest takeaway from comparing shots with them is 1. AF of the Zf BLOWS the X-T5 away. It isn’t close. 2. Dynamic range and ‘balance’ of tones from the Zf consistently blew the X-T5 away. X-T5 consistently wanted to overpower a scene with light while Zf managed much better range of shadows & highlights in an image.. often leading to better color retention.

That’s why the full frame vs APS-C doesn’t make sense to me must of the time because you can always add light from say a little pocket flash or led to strobes etc depending on the situation! The agreement that I am trying to make is you can make great photos with mostly any cameras these days! If you know what you are doing.

The XT5 is a street and travel camera. The Nikon is for landscape, events, product photography, portraits. Depends what sort of photography you most engage in. I would argue that they make a killer street and travel camera already in the X100V, and Nikon make better pro cameras fit for purpose. Both are fun, both feel special and for me it's not whether you use a nikon or a fuji, did you get the shots you wanted?

    Just one addition: The price difference in real life is more pronounced. You can easily find X-T5s around the 1500- 1600, while the ZF is usually around 2300+ (without lens). Also, the weight question is tricky. An X-T5 with the popular 23mm 1.4 weighs just as much as an Zf with the 40mm F2. If been going back and forth with these and started comparing weights with different lens options and it depends a lot on the glass you put on them... You are supposed to hold the camera with the lens attached to it. Since old SLRs are manual focus, you always had to hold the lens while shooting. So the grip was not really an issue. Its a retro styleded camera, I dont understand people complaining so much about the grip. Just buy a Z6, Z8, Z9 Nikons if you want to grip. Let us enjoy the camera for what it is. You also have the option on buying a grip.

You are saying that I should not say anything about the grip because the camera is a retro style camera... but so is the X-T5... and the grip is just better imo. Hence the point. Nikon Zf is a beast but one thing is missing; film simulations! No camera brand is close to beating Fujifilm when it comes to colour science. If shooting JPG is included in your work, Fujifilm can give more options. Back in the days and up until now, it's not really the number of megapixels or size of the sensor that matter. It's the colour. Way back, film stock brands compete against each other using their unique colours. Photographers today battle it out using their presets. It's still colours that is the point of contention.

    No one and especially pros/prosumers care about film simulation and that can be seen by the market share fuji has. What most people care about is better dynamic range, better low light performance and better auto focus. In all 3, ZF is literally crushing the XT-5.

  • @drakeydrake1076

    @drakeydrake1076

    @@emmanouiltzavidas9119 those factors are useless if the colours and composition/storytelling is lacking in a camera and in the photographer himself. Size sensor, megapixel count, and better autofocus capabilities only add up a little to the photographer's skills and creativity. It will always boil down to the colours and composition/storytelling. And Fujifilm does better in those departments. And I disagree that pros/prosumers do not care that much about film simulations or colours. Because colour is very important in a photo. Majority of consumers do not care about the gear features a creative artist have in his disposal. All they care about is the look and feel of themselves in the photos. If you have the latest gears but lack creativity in colours, composition, and storytelling, you will not get a number of clients as much as those photographers who do not have that high end gears yet bountiful in creativity.

Both great looking cameras! When Nikon announced the Zf I was very tempted to buy one, but I could resist until I could check the camera out at a local store - which was a pretty good decision. After a few minutes I decided not to buy the Zf. Too big, just two lenses that fit the style of the camera, weird implementation of PASM and dedicated wheels and - of course - the horrible flip out screen I already hate on my Lumix S5. The sensor on the other hand is great, the AF is brilliant and for someone who owns a Nikon FE2 the design is very appealing (although far too big compared to the FE2). But all in all I would opt for the Fuji if I would be forced to buy one of these two cameras. The “package” appears to me more well rounded. But I could understand if someone opts for the Zf. Technically it is a Z6II on steroids.
