Fujifilm X-H2 - Hands On Review

Last week I had the chance to spend 5 days shooting with Fujifilm's latest flaghship camera, the 40mp X-H2. Here are my thoughts on what's probably the biggest jump in performance in an X Series camera since the X-T2

    I like the way Andy says, "I'm primarily a landscape photographer and don't really do street photography - I'm not particularly good at it", then proceeds to show about a dozen excellent street images from New York 😁!

    Always enjoy your detailed & thorough reviews. Decided to make the switch from an X-T3 to the X-H2 a couple weeks ago and this feels like a huge upgrade on multiple levels. I've only used it for my daughter's soccer games so far, but saw an immediate improvement in the overall quality of the shots I was getting and a higher percentage of keepers as well.

    Thanks for taking the time to provide additional information overlaid on your video. You provided enough information on setting handling, so I decided to go for the X-H2 instead of waiting for the X-T5. I have not used a PASM-based camera since the X-T1 came out, but I'm thinking 40MP and the deeper grip/nice shutter combination of an X-Hx series would make the X-H2 worth it.

    Thanks for a very clear and comprehensive review Andy, the XH2 is top of my list at the moment. I had hands on of it and the Nikon Z7 today and I felt the XH2 was the better handling camera. As an XT3 landscape shooter I will wait for the XT5 before making a decision but on the strength of what I have seen so far I agree with you the XH2 is looking like a fabulous choice. So pleased I have invested in Fuji, I think they are taking a huge step here.

    Well four months later… your story is about the same as mine. I ended up getting a H2 over the T5. Why? The buffer. I am mostly a landscape shooter but I do shoot much faster subjects and was worried about the buffer filling up after a second or two. Not a spray and pray shoot but intentional burst to get just the right shot.

    The EVF is a bliss on XH2, for manual focusing just perfect. Coming from the XT2 which was a hassle on manual focusing, where you often will miss the focus and shot.

    Hi this was such a great video and you take beautiful photos! I have a question I hope you don’t mind helping me with: I have an XT3 and I'm just looking for, ideally, an all-in-one lens I can use for events, portraits, and to be prepared for lowlight situations. I love that Fuji lenses are small and easy to carry, but if I don't need to carry multiple lenses, I'd rather not. Do you have any recommendations? Another KZreadr suggested an 18-50mm f2.8 and a “1.4 prime lens” but they never said which/how many mm for the prime lens exactly, sigh. Thank you! 🙏

    Easily the most informative and best review I've seen. So nice to hear the thoughts of somebody who really takes great photos not just gear reviewers. Did you ever experience any issues with rolling shutter in real world experiences? I feel like I've never experienced it with the X-T4 or even X100V recording video, so I would probably be fine with this. Crazy that you can get the same AF system with 40MP for $500 less and only miss the stacked sensor which as you said seems only really relevant for super slow mo or high speed action shooting.

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks so much for the comment, really glad you enjoyed the review. I didn’t notice any rolling shutter in the time I was using it, and I haven’t heard reports about it so I don’t think it’s an issue. I agree with you that this is a really good value, although my understanding is that the stacked sensor is more expensive to produce, which accounts for the price difference, along with some extremely strong hints from Fuji that the 40mp sensor is going to be reused in future cameras. So you’ll probably get the same sensor, along with the same AF and processed in the XT5, but minus the CF Express card, minus the super high res EVF and minus some of the video features like Pro Res, and the really high shutter speeds. And that will likely cost less, as Fuji claim the XH series is the flagship and above the XT series.

    @@AndyMumford Thanks for the insight. Have you found the 10-24 works well with the new 40mp sensor? It’s not on the list of supported lenses but neither is the 16mm 1.4 which is one of fuji’s sharpest lenses afaik

    Great review. As an X-T user, definitely agree with you on the lot of us missing the articulating screen. As (slightly) bulky as it was, it was extremely comfortable to use as from a photo-centric perspective. Perhaps Fujifilm could have kept the articulating screen for more photo-focused line up/users, and pass off the flip-out screen to more video-focused users or devices (ie. X-H2S).

    A fine review. The three things that separate the H2 vs H2S is the pixel shift, more megapixels, and 8K. For the rest, the H2S is the one to have (as a hybrid shooter). I had the H2 and now have and will keep the H2S....until the next 'toy' comes along ;)

    Great review as ever. I was interested in the comment you made regarding your initial impression of build quality. I have an X-T2 and X-H1 and have been reluctant to upgrade to the X-T4 because somehow it feels the material is cheaper. It sounds as if, although a great camera, I will get a similar feeling with the X-H2 which is a great pity.

  • @AndyMumford

    I didn't feel that about the XT4..that to me feels like a very solid camera. I think the thing with the XH2 is that so much of the sides are doors for the many connectors, and the flip out screen runs all the way along the bottom of the camera (it has no housing) and felt a little less solid at first. Also, i've been using the GFX a lot recently, which is an incredibly solid camera, and that may have affected my first impressions. After using it for a while though I was really comfortable with the build.

Given your experience with the full range of X-bodies and your focus on light-weight equipment, do you consider this body to be your first choice to take with your for a hiking trip (given it's only 50g on the X-T4), or would you prefer the X-S10 which is ~200g lighter?

Inevitably it took some getting used to and likewise if I don't use for a week or 2 there's a short investment of time needed to refamiliarise. I still miss the ISO dial and focus switch on the front, but personally, the faster AF was my main reason for switching with the dual sensor as I shoot nature and fast-action. I have the XH2S not the XH2, but can concur with everything Andy says re. build quality and form factor, which is the same on both. If faster AF isn't needed, then I'd probably advise waiting for the XT5 and then doing a head-to-head with those as there'll be a step-up in upgrade terms relative to a switch XT3 > XT4.

    Amazing review Andy! Been following you for almost 2 years now and love your content and structure of camera reviews. I've been looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this camera for a while. I do have a question around Controls and Handing. As someone who is coming from an XT3 I am open to going to a PASM dial however in my mind I thought I could use the front dial for ISO, real dial for shutter speed, and keep the aperture to the lens. It sounds like this is not the case? Can you please talk through how you have the camera setup as someone who also shot with the xt4 and xt3 for some time now? This nit pick on my end feels like a big deal but maybe in practice it's not that big of a deal.

    I recently rented an X-H2s for a dance performance in the theater. I usually use my Nikon Z8 and Z9, but I purchased and XT-5, which I love for everyday and travel photography. My full frame cameras are for lowlight shooting. I used my XT-5 with one lens for the dance performance and the X-H2s with another. The buffer on the XT-5 was obviously slow, but the X-H2s was a fast little beast. I found iso 5000 to be the acceptable limit, but usable. Iso 3200 to 4000 would be preferable for lowlight. I enjoyed testing the X-H2s but not being a videographer, I will purchase the X-H2 for stills. The 40 megapixel sensor with Fuji's new processor is amazing! I did not notice much difference between the high iso images between the rented x-H2s and my XT-5. Fuji's new image processor really delivers!

As for the tonality of the colour, that comes from the colour information. The XH2 has 14 bit colour, the GFX has 16 bit colour, so the tonal range is higher in the GFX

    Thanks for this excellent review. One of the things I found very interesting, is the comparison of the same street image between X-H2 and X-S10. To my opinion, even at 100% zoom, you can hardly see any detail differences between the two sensors (40 and 26 MP). Maybe the lens is a factor here, apparently the 10-24 can not take full advantage of the 40MP. Still I believe, that in real live the 40MP are a marginal step up from the 26MP, not a major one. On a area where there are 4x4 pixels on the old sensor, you now have 5x5 pixles. However in total, with autofocus, IBIS etc., the X-H2 seems like a fantastic camera. Good to see, that high ISO performance is more or less on the level of the X-T4.

  • @quikee9195

    @quikee9195

    At 100% you won't get any detail difference, but size difference - also you're watching a 4k video. Unless you have a good 8k monitor looking at the image directly (not a scaled down 4k video) you probably won't notice any difference, and even with the equipment, the difference wouldn't be all that much... maybe with a large print of a high detailed scene. The advantage of 40MP is the flexibility - better margins for cropping and added resolution to trade when doing post-processing.

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Жыл бұрын

    As the other comment pointed out, it's difficult to see the actual difference in detail between the two sensors side by side because to do that I'd need to be able to zoom in further on the larger sensor than I do on the 26mp sensor, which Lightroom doesn't allow me to do. What you can see though is how much larger, and therefor how many more pixels are on each object at the same focal length, so you can print bigger before the objects in the frame start to break down. Additionally, as was pointed out, you're seeing this video at compressed 4k, which is 3800 pixels across, when the files themselves are 7700 pixels and 6200 pixels, so you're never going to be able to really see the difference on a video. Whether the difference is marginal or not I think is really subjective and depends on your needs. It's a 25% increase in native print size along the longest edge, which to people printing is probably significant. For web use, then it's not really significant at all other than being able to crop deeper into your image.

    Thanks for this entirely apposite review of the new XH2. I run a GFX system. I was baffled by the decision to put the lower res, lower calibre EVF in the 100s and I am now utterly puddled that they put the higher res model in the camera which has much lower resolution. They really ought to have given 100s owners the option for the higher res tilting EVf in the 100 and original 50S. It is not as if we didn't pay for the tilt adapter. Now, entirely sensibly, Hasselblad bring to market a 100MP model using the same sensor but they have the gumption to equip it with the better EVF and to increase its magnification to 1.0 so it feels like looking into a gigantic world compared to the cruddy version shoved into the 100s. One of the great benefits of these cameras is the ability to shoot a wide range of subjects hand-held courtesy of the IBIS. The calibre of the EVF is pretty fundamental to that capability. Its fantastic for XH2 owners they get the uprated EVF. As you point out, having much recent experience of shooting the GFX system, it is noticeably superior to that plonked in the GFX 100s.

    I think at the end of the day it came down to a cost decision and Fuji were trying to keep the cost of the 100S down as they still have the larger GFX 100 with the better EVF, and it’s a point of differentiation. I’m pretty sure the Hasselblad is significantly more expensive. The XH2 is obviously cheaper, but the sensor is much cheaper too, and is also one which Fuji will repeat in other cameras, thus saving costs.

    Thanks Andy for yet another excellent gear review. Any idea how the X-H2 will handle long exposures (4 minutes and longer)? What about the color bit depth? Fuji mentions one bit depth for RAW files and another for TIFF. Pls explain the difference.

    Thanks for the comment Lars. I didn’t do any 4 minute exposures, but I did a couple around 2 minutes and felt it handled the noise very well (I always have in camera noise reduction turned off). As for the difference in bit depth between RAW and TIFF, I can’t comment on it as I only shot in RAW. I no longer have the camera (I borrowed it for around a week to make the review), so it’s not something I can go back and look at

    @@AndyMumford Thanks, Andy for quick reply. I currently shoot a lot of 4 minute exposures with a Fuji X-H1 which can handle this pretty well thanks to improved cooling of sensor compared to the X-T2 that I also own. Would be interesting to get further inputs on the color depth question at some stage.

    Hi Andy, Thanks for making this video! I'm wondering if you think the 40mp cropped sensor is comparable in image quality and depth to a full frame sensor? And do you think this camera/sensor is suitable for professional level work?

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Comparable to which full frame sensor? I've been using APS-C sensors professionally in my work (I'm a landscape photographer, my work is used commercially and sold for prints) for 7 years, and have never felt that a sensor with perhaps 1 stop less dynamic range and 1/2 stop worse noise performance at high ISOs compared to full frame has any real negative effect on my images for real world shooting.

    Andy, thanks for this excellently detailed and reviewed post. How would the images of this 40 compare overall with those of the GFX50SII, ignoring the larger native size increase? You did mention pixel density differences and showed sample images of this 40mp and the older 26mp sensors nicely. So, does this 40mp make the GFX50SII more or less obsolete, for a someone considering entering the GFX system for stills photography? I do understand video capabilities are worlds apart here. Earlier this year I considered moving into the GFX50sII from my X-H1 system but chose not to because of the massive increase in costs in replacing my lenses with even just two or three GFX pieces. I think I just answered my own questions 😂 Your comments would be appreciated 😊.

    It's hard to say as I don't have any of Fuji's cameras with the 50mp sensor to be able to do a proper comparison. I would say that I remember the files on the MF sensor as being really clean and having wonderful fidelity..but I shot with it in very different conditions. Realistically the larger sensor will give you improvements in noise and dynamic range, but in actual real world shooting, probably not that noticeable unless your shooting in conditions where you really need to push those things

    Glad I did not wait for this camera and bought a GFX50R instead. The PASM dial and grip are not for me-the deeper grip is great for larger male hands but mine don’t manage to cover it. In the X-H1, I keep hitting the Q button almost every single time, which is beyond annoying, so selling that one too. I look forward to seeing what Fuji does with the X-T5!

    Awesome videos and content Andy! I just switched over to this camera and was out shooting the 70-300 yesterday, I was not able to get focus when I zoomed out to 300mm, I had to go back to 70mm and adjust the focus as I continued to zoom back towards 300mm! My question is, have I missed a setting in the camera or is there something wrong with the lens or camera? Thanks

    Nice review, Andy. I sold my 50R and it was a sad day indeed as those files were superb. Since you have a relative comparison to the GFX100, can you provide a somewhat comparison in the files between the H2 and the GFX? Particularly, the roll-off of highlights to shadows? More rapid drop-off or somewhat close?

    I didn't shoot the cameras side by side, so I can't make a direct comparison with the 100S. Certainly there shouldn't be too much difference to the 50R you had though. They have similar resolution, and both have 14 bit colour, so in terms of roll off, there shouldn't be much difference. However, the larger sensor will give you more dynamic range, which I've always found makes the shadows much more flexible on the medium format cameras.

    Excellent review Andy. I was hoping that this was the stills version of the XH2 family so was disappointed to see they have opted for the CF Express card (which is a bit baffling when it doesn't have the fast stacked sensor) and also (for me and lots of other stils shooters) that dreaded fully articulated screen!!! These two issues are the reason that I will be waiting for the XT5....and hoping they keep to the XT3 flippy screen styling. Maybe I'll end up buying the XH2 if the XT5 inherits the articulated screen and CF card slots if only for the superb grip!!

  • @AndyMumford

    @AndyMumford

    Thanks for the comment, glad you liked the review. I think the CF express card is going to be a point of differentiation between the XT5, as well as the EVF most likely. You do need CF Express to shoot Pro Res video, and I think Fuji’s idea for this camera is high resolution and maximum output quality, both still and video, rather than it being a still camera. As for the flip out screen, I’m not sure where Fuji will go with that. They know that the XT4 was a really popular all round camera, so on that basis I think its likely to stay.

    @@markolwick2223 I could understand that on the XH2s - geared for speed. XH2 is as near to a stills camera as we are likely to get so it is not built for fast bird and animal tracking. As a stills guy, I would never use 15 fps...too many shots to wade through!!!. I would have thought people who need to shoot at these speeds would opt for the XH2s - here's hoping the XT5 will have double SD slots and a flippy screen!!!!

    @@kaneclements7761 Thanks for the reply. Yes, in that scenario I can see the need. I'm trying to get across a point from a purely stills photography angle....everything seems to be geared towards video these days and I wish we had a high spec camera aimed at stills photography...there are still many thousands of people who, like me, have never pressed the video button!!! LOL So, as a stills guy, I rarely shoot 15fps and if I do it is a one off for a short period. If I was into sports and wild life then yes, the CF Express card would be beneficial for lots of high speed work

    Lovely camera, but my concern with Fuji is that with each new model, the weight continues to rise and the greatest advantage they have over FF cameras is being progressively lost. My first, the XE1, was 350g. By the time we got to the XT4, we were up to 526g and now this new model is 660 with battery and recording media. We are now getting into Canon R5 territory in relation to weight. My other issue is the restriction on lenses that can be used with the new 40MP sensor. Obviously you can put any XF lens in front of it, but if you look at Fuji's web site many of my lenses are no longer recommended. For me, it is time to look back to mirrorless FF

    I take your point and agree with you about the increasing size and weight of the cameras. My feeling is that the XH model is always going to be bigger and heavier than the XT model, and I think it’s likely the XT5 will weigh about the same as the XT4. When it comes to weight though, it’s easy to just compare camera bodies and not take into account the system as a whole. I’ve seen a lot of weight comparisons which cherry pick lenses to prove one thing or the other, but a like for like comparison between lenses of similar focal lengths and quality will always have a full frame system quiete a bit heavier when you have 2 or 3 lenses.

    @@AndyMumford not so sure about that. If you add a medium tele zoom, the fuji 50-140 weighs essentially the same as the Canon 70-200 f2.8, and considerably more than the f4. The wider zooms are much the same The 24-70 2.8 canon is a brick but a fantastic lens. I have actually traded out of my main Fuji gear now back to Canon and pocked up the R5. The xt4 was a lovely piece of kit but i have had that body, and an xpro 2, both fail in the analog dials, with them repeatedly jamming. The canon body is far more robust and there is just no comparison with the AF for my non landscape work. The deed is done for me. Will keep the (now repaired) xpro 2 and some light primes for street work but thats it for me
