Fujifilm X-H2 First Impressions
Ғылым және технология
The Fujifilm X-H2 is the highest resolution APS-C camera available today. We were able to spend some with a pre-production model, and have some opinions about where the X-H2 excels, and when you might want to take a look at its sister model, the X-H2S.

Thank you for pointing out that the full resolution electronic shutter burst rates are backwards at 3:13. The X-H2S can shoot 40 fps, the X-H2 can shoot 13 fps max. Apologies for the mistake!

Have to wonder: Do Chris and Jordan use any sort of teleprompter when recording their excellent videos? There's so much info they share about each camera or lens or whatever the topic is that it seems impossible for anyone to memorize it all before filming. (Unless that's their superpower for each...)

Great options with Fuji! Wonderful work from you guys!
For $1999 this is surprisingly good value considering it has similar specs to a Canon R5 ($3900) but with an APSC sensor. I mean even the XT4 costs $1699 so this is $300 more for a LOT of improvements.

400mp at 15fps in jpeg only simply doesn't stop. I LOVE seeing the box actually tracking birds in flight and sometimes also finding the eye!. Being able to set the custom settings to exactly what I need for this kind of shooting is a great boon that I first discovered on the X-S10. Now I have SEVEN slots to fill:) With this burst rate, I see my hard disk needing a LOT more space. Best camera I've ever had in my hands.

Excited for the higher resolution!
Pre-ordered. I only shoot stills, maybe this will get me into a little video but it's all about the 40mp resolution for me. Considering how gorgeous the shots with my X-T4 can be, I can't imagine the H2.

Hey guys. Love your content! When you do get to do a full and proper test of the X-H2, I would appreciate (if you have the opportunity to include), testing (or at least investigating) the effective aperture limit due to diffraction given the new 40 megapixel sensor. Thanks again!
Should have comparison tests with the 2S, the color production from the 5 HR & 40MP is nice. In photo and video, maybe they both produce very different looks.

Very interesting camera. I have decided to switch from Canon to Fuji, but as a landscape stills-photographer in northern Norway where more than half the year is winter and with little or no daylight, and harsh weather, X-h2 noise and performance in low light, dynamic range and weather resistance will be important...also how smoothly will all my EF lenses work with this new X-h2... Thanks for your always grate reviews! Cheers!
We should also expect the new breed of Fuji cameras, i.e., X1006, X-Pro4, XS2, XT5, and XE5.
Wen you get the full review please do some birding with the 100-400 and/or the 150-600mm lenses.
I'm curious how good the IBIS is. For instance, can you take a handheld 1/2 second exposure at sunset, to capture it at a fairly low ISO, without an image stabilized lens? Thus, can you take full advantage of the 40 Mp details in low light, handheld scenarios?
I really like the footage from this camera.
Fantastic review as always! Would love to see the X-H2 do some 1:1 macro shooting and cropping down to produce tighter shots. Could be really nice for people who crop a lot (me).

Also curious about macro and stacking capabilities, wonder if 40mpix sensor won't make diffraction to kick earlier at 1:1 and 2:1, with sony 24mpix max aperture without loss of resolution is F8.
Seems like Fujifilm is going the Sony routes, X-H2 being the a7R route, and X-H2s the a7S route. As a Fuji X-T4 I am just waiting to see what the X-T5 will become. Not that I intend on buying any new cameras for the foreseeable future XD Great preview!
I would love to eventually buy an X-H3 with a 40 MP stacked sensor. Like many others, the only thing that keeps me from buying the X-H2 are concerns over rolling shutter. Please, when you finally publish your long-awaited in-depth review, please compare the rolling shutter with the likes of the Nikon Z9, Sony A1, Sony A7 SIII, Canon R5, Sony A7R V and, of course, other Fujifilm cameras. For the upcoming photo review: Are you going to have a look at diffraction with the high pixel density?
I don't need 8K, or a fast read sensor. What I need is a high resolution sensor, that can do 160mp multi-shot, so I can mount my camera on a tripod and get high-res landscapes. My other use will be senior pictures and weddings. I'm also not worried about rolling shutter, as my video uses never have panning. Hopefully it'll do this well, as I'm not sure how it's going to handle water reflections when the images are combined with they move. But we're gonna find out, I've got one on order. I'm sure it'll be a nice upgrade from my X-T3 which doesn't even have stabilization. For a moment I considered Fuji's GFX system, but this new H2 has 160mp multi-shot mode, if it works well, I can't see why I'd need a GFX and a whole new suite of lenses.
Morning all, will the Final review be coming for the xh2 I’m waiting for you guys before choosing between the S5ii and this camera
Can you please PLEASE do a comparison of this new 56mm lens and the 50mm f1.0 lens? Specifically a comparison about the amount of light they let through? I want to know how close this new 56 comes to the 50. I already own the 50 and the old 56 APD, and based on how bright the new 56 is, I might replace both of them with it.
Any info about 1) the use of L bracket with flippy screen ( I would have preferred the tilt screen of X-H1); 2) any breakage history for the flippy screen hinge (with it hanging off the the side, could easily get caught on anything or incompletely stowed) 3) any one step work-arounds for having to menu dive for focus selection for continuous, single, manual (instead of the single step of selector turn). I'm bumbed out by these differences.
Good first review. When official body is available, I would appreciate a comparison between the AF performance of the H2 and H2S. For me the 15 fps mechanical is plenty fast. If the AF performance is the same between the two, I'll take resolution over speed I don't really need any day. The fact the H2 non-S is cheaper is the icing on the cake.

How do you think this new lens compares to the older 90mm f2? Obviously different FL but both are used for portrait work so curious how they compare. Also the 90mm f2 has LM autofocus so assuming a lot faster AF?
Hope the XT-5 is an X-T4 with the new sensor and other stills improvements.
I just came from Camera-Kai's youtubey preview of the H2 to see what the Dpreview boys might additionally add here, but I thought about Kai's parting comment - What is the XT-5 going to add to the lineup apart from a shutter/iso/compo dial? Is that enough? Heck and I don't even like PSAM dials..
want to hear more about the new 56mm
Thanks guys! It would be great if you could compare this to the X-T4. Why, because this camera has been out for a while (I'm still shooting the X-T3) so the people looking at the X-H2 are probably looking to upgrade from one of the previous models. Personally, I have been considering moving up to a full frame camera for the added resolution and amazing eye auto detect that other systems offer. Since I primarily shoot wildlife and macro those features are important to me. (crop, crop, and crop some more.) However, the cost involved to switch systems is outrageous and unless a full frame camera is 45mp + it doesn't seem to be worth it to me. This new Fuji may just keep me invested in the APS-C format a bit longer... Cheers, Greg

I'm in the same boat as you. Thinking of upgrading to FF but no way I can afford the switch. This 40 MP sensor is very tempting and I could keep all of my lenses.
really nice.
What an awesome camera for the price. 15 fps is still more than enough for action packed photography. Sure you may miss a shot here or there, but is it worth 500 more? This has more pdaf poins than the xh2s for what it's worth. Rolling shutter isn't an issue for me, I don't record video anyways, this is just everything I want and for 500$ more than the r7, it's a steal for the features
Looking at the detail in the grass I remember shooting my newly released Canon 5D Mark II in the hills of northern California and wondering why it looked like crap. I knew the lens had the resolution...back then adding sharpness in landscape was a thing. Until you looked at it. Back then I barely knew anything about video, but I managed to fake it.
That rolling shutter! Oof. That answers why it doesn't have (my new must-have) 4K120... because it truly cannot read out fast enough. Bummer. I'll be waiting on the X-H3/X-T6 I guess...
3:13 I think you swapped the fps between cameras on the graphic, yes?
Was this whole episode shot on the X-H2? If not, what was is shot on? Also, I wonder, does the BMD video assist even record BRAW in 8k? I always thought it was only 4k...
when you guys show examples of the video footage, is there any post processing or is it straight out of camera?
In the Braw support, does it support it only in to 30fps or it can be changed to 24 or 25?

The lenses project the image they do, a higher MP sensor just lifts the headroom. Some lenses have the sharpness to make full use of that, some only a little bit. Most lenses will benefit in the center and not in the corners. *In no case do they perform worse.*
@JHuffPhoto
Жыл бұрын
Really the jump from 26 to 40 MP is not as much as it sounds. In order to double your resolution you have to multiply your current MP by 4. So to double the resolution of your photos you would have to have a 104 MP sensor. 40 MP will come in handy when you want to crop or if you are going to print really big and stare at that print from a really close distance. I would not worry too much about the 40 MP out resolving your current lenses unless you plan to do some serious pixel peeping. Personally I prefer to make photographs.
I think it would be interesting to compare 6.2k upscaled to 8k from the H2S vs 8k from the H2. I’m willing to bet the detail advantage may not be as high as some think it will be. I think most viewers would be hard pressed to look at upscaled 6.2k video and say hey that’s not really 8k. Even for those crazy reframing fans out there, kidding, 6.2k is still a lot of reframing potential. I personally would rather have 6.2k with super fast sensor readout, 14bit and the potentially better sensitivity. Even from a stills perspective 26MP is not a bad thing to have vs 40MP. Unless one really needs to crop their photos a lot as a normal process I don’t feel the added MP is worth the inferior sensor overall. In terms of over sampling 6.2K and 8k downscaled to 4K should be identical. Without a doubt Fuji is killing it right now. I moved from m43 to Canon R6 and RF mount a year ago but I’m really starting to wonder if that was a wise choice. It’s a nice camera but I really feel like the R6 just isn’t doing for video what Fuji does. I was also rather impressed with the Fuji lens options out there. I still worry about the long term market longevity of Fuji in a rapidly shrinking camera market. It’s hard to believe the market will support anybody but Sony and Canon. Plus FF is all the rage now and one wonders how much the industry wants APS-C much like if m43 still has a place. I don’t really want to invest a lot in Fuji glass if it just doesn’t survive. At least with Canon there is the perfect adapting of EF to RF mount. A lot of Canon DSLR, Canon cinema, BMD cinema and mr3 SpeedBooster users moved to EF glass a long time ago. That’s kind of why I went the Canon R6 route. Made the most sense for my EF lenses and it seemed more market safe.

R6 isn’t doing a lot for pro video but it’s still really good in terms of picture quality. And you can’t necessarily look at a Canon made in 2020 and be like why isn’t it as good as a Fuji made in 2022? Moreover, though they’re at a similar price, Fuji’s XH2s are a premium product, whereas Canon R6 is a midrange product. I feel like Canon always eventually gives people what they want; they just make you wait a bit. I suggest that people be happy with what they have and not worry too much about other systems, especially when every system has plenty of advantages.

Fuji or other systems don't have something close to my current set up. APSC/m43 low light is limited, and that's physics. E mount 35-150mm is too heavy for daily use. RF14-35L is too expensive; and Tamron 17-28 straight out colors are lacking IMO. Thus I stay on current setup for now.

@@zegzbrutal Oh I love my R6. Best camera I ever owned. I wish it could do open gate 5.4K or external raw video but other than that it’s a solid video camera. It gets a bad reputation in the video industry but it’s the only FF camera that can do over sampled 4K 60p without cropping or some crude pixel binning. I now work with only HDR and the HDR PQ on Canon cameras is simply amazing. Much better than HLG. I hardly ever shoot log anymore because the HDR PQ color and dynamic range out of the box is stunning on HDR displays. I get about 780 nit HDR which is close enough to a HDR 1000 workflow. With Clog-3 I can easily get to 1000 nits but it’s more work and it has more noise. I find working with the HDR PQ insanely easy in FCP and a 14” MBP with XDR display. So no matter what cool features Fuji may have I’m not leaving Canon for now.
I have noticed stuttering on every movie setting I have used while panning slowly. I'm using a fast CFast card and have tried on different computers but still showing the same problem. It's there with IBS on or off. Other X-H2 owners have noticed it. Have you?

What I'm currently most curious about is, will there even be a X-T5? And how will it be different to the X-H line? With the X-H1 and X-T3, I felt like the H was more video-oriented (even though the H literally stands for hybrid) while the T was more photography. Now I feel like both bases are covered so well with these two X-H models, the X-T5 can only really be a downgrade in terms of specs. Is the only difference gonna be the button/dial layout?
Could you please upload that nightshot to the sample galery too? It would make a great desktop wallpaper :-P
