Fujifilm GFX50S Long Term Review | Worth it in 2022??

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The Fujifilm GFX50S changed the game for medium format digital cameras. It was the first for many wedding photographers, studio photographers, portrait photographers and landscape photographers to provide a larger format sensor at a much more affordable price point. Now that it’s been a few years since the original release, prices on these are not only affordable to the higher end professionals, but many now have the option of getting a newer full frame camera or one of these!

I picked one up with a techart ef adapter for my sigma art lenses. The images are amazing. AF is definitely sub-par compared to my R6. Learning to use it in manual focus with the zoom function for shooting editorial portraits and headshot has helped my keeper rate when shooting at 1.4. I'll probably start shooting 1.8-2.2 that DOF is so shallow

The 50S has been my favorite digital camera purchase over the last few years. The size and limitations were reminiscent of my previous Pentax 67/645, which I loved, with the perks of digital. The options for adapting both 645 lenses and 35mm lenses, plus Fuji film simulation make it a game changer.

I used the 50s when it came out in 2017, and was happy with it. I exchanged it for a 100 when it came out, mostly for the 16 bit color and the IBIS. i must say that the image quality is slightly better on the 50s. For my work it mostly sat on a tripod, and the Fuji lenses, although good, are a little bit wanting for 100 mp. In the end the depth of color is not better, and it is a pretty decent medium format camera at a good price (they retail second hand for almost nothing). Only things are: never shoot handheld at a lower shutter speed than the focal length -I would go double to keep things safe-, and use a color checker passport to correct your files which, as in all fujis trend heavily to the magentas.

I don't know about the GF lenses a little bit wanting for the 100MP. I have almost all of them and besides the 100-200mm every GF lens is top notch, IMHO. And from a well respected person should be no problems with 200MP version.

The Leica S lenses, and the PhaseOne Schneider-Kreuznachs are much more expensive that the Fuji lenses, but they are also much better. The cameras are less usable: they need to sit on a tripod, they aren’t great with ISO, and they cost much more. But for my line of work I don’t need IBIS: I don’t do weddings. What I need is top quality on wall and the best possible color accuracy and gradation. My work is sold to collectors and needs to be technically perfect. I carry the Fuji along with a Leica S, and in the near future it will go along a PhaseOne IQ4 I have agreed to buy. from another photographer. One complements the other. On your “well respected person” topic. I have been working professionally for quite a number of years with digital MF; Before that, and alongside, with medium format analog, and analog large format. I have a professional degree in photography, and a photography MA in a “well respected” UK university; and teach a history of photography course at a professional photography school. I might -just might- have achieved some technical prowess throughout my years of practice. I think he is right that the gfx lenses can resolve 200. They actually resolve more with the 450 MP pixel shift feature. But for the same lens and sensor size, the larger the resolution, the lower -comparatively- is the quality. The Fuji 50s files are slightly better, when shot right, than the 100. Same happens with the Leica S-2 or 006 vs the new S3 (which has gone from 37 mp to 64). PhaseOne, when they launched the IQ4 back of 150 mp recommended to use their blue ring lenses only, and they had to ask Schneider to re-issue some of those blue rings. Regarding the 100-200, a recalibration helped in my case. It works better now.

@@irenedp4947 Well I can get the IQ4 but wife won't be happy that I bought $50k camera for shots of my kids.:). And the AF is crappy for my needs. So the lowly GFX100s would do for now. I have both GFX50s and GFX100s and I say that GFX100s is better if the picture quality is concerned. First time I am hearing that GFX50s has better quality. But what do I know, Photography is just a hobby for me. Personally I like GFX50s more due to the tilt adapter and it was my first buy.

I got your cascade presets a while back, but my pictures (Fuji X100 and XT2) seem to be much more desaturated. Are you also adding saturation or vibrance or anything else to make your colors Pop? Keep up the great work :).

hey hey! Yeah, it all depends on the image, but adding dehaze to a lot of them boosts the punch as well. You can always try adding more for sure too. It's always just a balancing act trying to get them to work well across all cameras

I really love the original 50S. It reminds me of my former Pentax 67II. I HAVE THE 100S and find it much too modern. For instance it’s hard to lock iso. However, it’s quicker with better auto focus. And the images are significantly better than the 50S, hard as that might be to believe. I use the 100S handheld with the canon 100-400 and find severe crops of distant church weather vanes ( as an example) are completely usable as stand alone images. So 50S is for tripod work. And 100S for everything else. Thanks for this engaging review.

Same here, like my old GFX50s more than the GFX100s for stationary shots. The best thing on GFX50s is the tilt adapter which Fuji removed from the GXF100s.

Nice video and I really like your grading (though I never use presets). Now, I've just bought a 50s and love the images but find the eyepiece/cup really difficult as I wear glasses like you. I don't seem to be able to get my eye into a position where I see the full frame at once and have to scan around. Do you have a workaround or any comments on the use of the EVF ? Thanks

I'm a huge Fuji fan since I've had my XT1 a while ago and then went to Canon 5D3 and 1DXii and then back to an XT3 for size but I do know what you mean in regards to that sensor look with the smaller cropped sensor. I love my XT3 and have taken some of my favorite photos with it, however I missed full frame so I picked up a cheap 5D Classic and some of those images are just WOW. Even for an old 12mp sensor the difference that FF makes with a 1.8 or even 2.8 lens is such a different look. I do eventually want a Digital Medium Format camera and I've looked at the older Pentax 645z but those cameras just lack any support and are a bit of a big old brick. I would LOVE the X1D but the glass is just outrageous. Ideally would love the X1D with the Mitikon lens as I've seen that combo and it looks solid but the GFX50s is still much cheaper of a body and used the identical sensor. I have shot with the Original X1D though and I fell in love with the design and just feel for that camera and the images looked stunning. So well see. But there are some GFX50s that I've seen for that 2k mark or even sub 2k, which is amazing.

hey sorry to comment on an older video but I've been going through a lot of your videos regarding the gfx series, especially the one where you compared the leica, and sony with the gfx and i have a question about that 50 1.2GM. How would you compare the fall off of the Sony 50 1.2 to the Mitakon 65 1.4? That Mitakon reminds of the Pentax 105 2.4 which is what really draws me towards that lens, but im fully invested in Sony and i know with Crop factors and all of that stuff the mitakon or even pentax 105 2.4 is pretty close to a 50mm 1.2. im a sucker for that full body portrait look of the pentax and was wondering if the sony 50 1.2 could achieve that same look. With the rise of film prices ive since shelved my pentax but recently caught wind of the gfx 50 series + 65 1.4 combo. that combo really peaked my interest, so ive been trying to do as much research as i can before making my decision.

Great overview! I'm going to go find your 50S-50Sii comparison as well. I'm shopping for a camera for my retirement, and while the camera snob in me would love the Hasselblad X1D, the Fuji is looking more and more like the practical option. Also from a practicality standpoint, I think I may be "over" film, and I have several MF film cameras whose sale could go toward the cost. I'm thinking the in-body stabilization is probably the biggest selling point for me for the Sii, but overall I like the idea of having the in-body shutter as well for adapting other lenses, as I have a fleet of old Hasselblad and Mamiya lenses that should work great!

  • @benjhaisch

    @benjhaisch

    Жыл бұрын

If the Hasselblad had a shutter in body it'd make the decision more difficult for me, but as it is, the GFX is just SOOO much more practical.

I bought a Sony a9 in fair condition from KEH 2 years ago for 2100$. I was expecting a banged up scratched up body but to my surprise it looks brand new. In my opinion it looks brand new and when I check the shutter count I was really cringing thinking it was gonna be extremely high. There was 411 on the shutter count. That’s right 411!! Wow. It didn’t come with any other manuals or in the original box. It came with the camera body of battery and a charger. I have been using this Sony A9 for all my racing shots and it works flawlessly. So if they’re saying it was in fair condition I can just imagine what new or excellent looks like. I am very happy with them and recommend them all the time. I’ve been thinking about grabbing a medium format camera to add to my portraits but I am wondering how it compares to my Sony A7riv which is 61 megapixels. I am thinking of the Fuji 100s and the gfx 110 f2 to start out with. Maybe the gfx 63 f2.8 down the road.

Thank you so much for this video !! Always love your work and organic feeling in this digital world ! Still, I just can't decide if I'm going with the OG 50S, or the 50SII, or the 100S... 50S would be for the dials (same experience as with my beloved X-H1) and tilt EVF, 50SII would be for the IBIS and Pixel shift option, 100S would be for the phase detect AF and the humongous data delivered. I (for now) only want one Fujifilm lens : GF45mm F2.8. Compact and such a fantastic rendering. Maybe I have to buy a 50S, work with it, and I'll decide about and upgrade in a couple of years ?... Anyway, thank you so much ! Colin
