There are a lot of pros out there that aren't gear heads. They found a certain camera that worked for them years ago and they stick with it. As long as it's performing the way they need it to and giving them the results they need, they feel no need to upgrade. Heck, some pro photographers I know make a great living and are genuinely good, but they couldn't hardly tell you the specs of their camera. Some people just don't care about tech. I, on the other hand, I'm not that way at all. :) I love camera gear of all brands (I've shot Canon, Nikon and now Fujifilm). I've been shooting with 2 X-T1's along side a X100S for over a year now and I can honestly say that they are my favorite cameras I've ever used. Aside from my personal work, I do a handful of weddings a year, maybe several portrait sessions and quite a bit of real estate work. My X-T1's (and X100S for that matter) have not disappointed at all. Coming from a Nikon D750, I don't feel like I've given up much in terms of ISO performance, dynamic range or resolution. I'm more than happy with the files from my X-T1. I had a 20x30 print made just recently and was blown away by the detail coming off that sensor. The print looks fantastic even an inch away. I even made a video about it. I'd love to upgrade to the X-T2 at some point. Most of the specs are just things I want, but not necessarily need. They only thing I technically "need" is duel card slots. I don't like only having 1 in the X-T1 (especially when I'm shooting a wedding). Other than that, I'm perfectly happy with my X-T1's.

I've done "utility" photography for 50 years - sports, journalism, editorial, events, theater, dance, etc. I need a camera that when I take pictures of people they don't react like I've just handed them a bowling ball. With the X-T20 and X-E2 I can practically shove the camera up their nose before they notice that they're having their picture taken. First thing I'd do with a T1 or T2 is take that blasted grip off! Obvious moral: different strokes for different folks. BTW, the X-E2 is just amazing and huge fun.

I like your attitude. For me as a beginner the Fuji X-T1 was kind of a natural choice. Coming from a Nikon D60 (very first camera) the Fuji with all the knobs and retro stuff just felt natural to me. It is so supporting to understand the techniques of photography when you tweak knobs and see the results. Now with my recent purchase of a Rokinon 12 mm lense I even took a step further in shooting the „old way“.

It really goes down to what we shoot and if we need pro centric features, or not. They are both great cameras and people need to stop comparing them because they were made to meet different needs. If I already had the X-t2, i would do the same as you, and get the X-t1 for back up. I don't really need the latest and the greatest, but I do have what works for me, and I've drawn a clear line on camera use; Nikon DSLRs - Df/D700/D7100 for work, Fuji X-e1 / X-e2 for travel and landscapes, Fuji x100 / X-pro1 and Panny LUMIX cameras for street. Thank you and keep up the good work.

Excellent video, thank you for sharing. I chose the X-T20 because of it’s size. I wanted something smaller and discrete for use in day to day/family shooting and for street shooting to use alongside my Canon DSLRs. The size difference takes some getting used to though. I added an aftermarket handgrip for comfort without increasing size or weight too much. The advantage is it can be removed when needed to bring the size back down. If I were to go deeper into Fuji and move away from Canon however, I would definitely look into one of the X-Ts or an X-Pro body. The Version 1s do look very good as a second body, but as I would be looking for a primary body addition in those circumstances, I would add the version 2 of either X-T or X-Pro for the better button ergos, thumbstick and dual memory cards.

I think the price is still the biggest factor of decision making but once you had X-T1, it's hard to go back to the smaller XT-20 - will always feel like "something is missing"? I'm a newbie to Fuji who purchased X-T20 who decided after watching your clips. Your works are a great introduction to the Fujiworld in general so thank you! As many said, the mega pixel myth is everywhere. I'm still quite happy with my 16MP Olympus EM5Mii haha!

Great video! I bought the X-T20 and returned it after using it for a week. I fell in love with the Fuji system over my Nikon D300s/D7100 systems, but I really wanted all those UPGRADES that the X-T2 offers... so, selling my Nikon gear and saving up for the MORE EXPENSIVE X-T2.

been watching videos for a month now and you got me sold on why I need to get the xt1 over the xt20. Budget is my main reason so i'm crossing xt2. Both cameras are evenly priced at the moment. I need a camera that I too can use in any weather condition since I love to travel and shoot landscapes and street and portraits. That said, it's the 2nd reason why I'm in a dilemma. Specs wise I really wanna buy the xt20 since it has more features included: higher megapixel, more advanced sensor, etc.. but I don't actually need that Since I'm only going t be using it here in the UAE and back home in the Philippines and the biggest concern is the abiity of the camera to withstand the extreme heat and dust here in the dessert and the mostly wet season in the Philippines? Is weather sealing overrated cause if the xt20 can handle that, id go for it since the added feature more like a bang for the buck. But I fear it can't so I'm leaning towards the XT1. what do you think?

Very good and informative comparison, Eric. I'm with you every single point you point out. I also had both X-T2&X-T20 and had to let go T20(mainly since I get attached to T2's EVF I just couldn't go back to T20. I wear glasses). But still I believe X-T20 is one of the best(maybe THE best) option for mirrorless out there for the price range. It's just pack with everything you'd want for something under $1000. It's just X-T2 is a little bigger beast of mirrorless and every time I play around with it I get more and more attached to it. Maybe X-T2 is like something that mustn't have exited in real world. :p It's just that good.

Hi Eric, I agree with you about the view finder. I own a X-T20. If you want to take photos in midday light, it's really difficult to see something in the EVF. But I found a special Eyecup on Amazon. I fix it on the hot shoe (almost never use flash gun). It fixed the problem definitly I have to admit that I don't wear glasses, maybe it can be more tricky). I also bought a 20€ hand grip that fits really well (less expensive thant the fuji one). Comming from a Canon Rebel T3i, I don't think the buffer is not that small (but I'm not a pro). With the Canon, It stops after 5 or 6 RAW files. With the X-T20, It's up to 30 RAW files and up to 27 in RAW+JPEG Fine... Yes, the joystick is probably usefull, but I won't go to the new X-T30, I would lost a lot of buttons that I use everytime.

Hello! I currently have Canon Rebel xsi 450D(10 years old). Any recommendation on which you'd buy if you had under $1,500? I'm hoping and putting a lot time to get better. I do a lot of street photography/street portrait, and I do a lot hiking so landscape is given. If I ever get better than now and become a wedding photographer or something else, that'd be crazy but a blessing👍👍. I was thinking to get XT-1 and build myself prime lenses, or get either XT-20 or XE-3(when it comes out). I know as a professional you'd need at least two cameras. So the one I will purchase now may become my back up and possibly buy XT-3 when it comes out in a year or so. Any thoughts and recommendation?

I have been looking to upgrade for a couple of years now and am torn between continuing with Nikon (Still running a D40 and ex film user F801) or switching to Fuji as I like the old school functionality combined with the mirrorless benefits but when I been been to stores and tried the Fuji's the overly contrasty image on the XT1's evf was a real downer whereas the XT10 evf image seemed far more realistic. This was last year around the time of the XT2's launch and I have to say I have not tried that or the XT20! Thanks for the prompt response.

I don't know how you measure AF speed.. I have a D700 and a X-T2 with battery grip (boost) and the X-T2 is NO where close to the D700 when it comes to focusing in low light. Now i LOVE the X-T2 for it's wonderful JPGs and for manual focus fotography but when it comes to Autofocus i go for my D700 every single time. I used them both in low light taking pictures of my kids while they where playing and running back and forth and the D700 with Continous autofocus and CH mode i got about 70-80% keepers. With the X-T2 in boost mode (with grip) on continous autofocus and CH (or CL) mode i hardly got 10-20% keepers.. The X-T2 was horrible for continous autofocus in low light. I love the camera and i use it all the time but if i want to take pictures of high speed action in any light situation the D700 is waaaayyyy better. I don't own a D4 but i can't imagine it being any worse than the D700.

Dude I know you said you don’t have the d500. I had the Xt2 and the d500 and shot events with them. The d500 has the best AF ON THIS PLANET especially in low light acquisition. The Xt2 is the worst camera I have ever used for low light af acquisition. The worst!!! In normal to good light it does fine but I would say more like the d750 which I also have and use regularly. But nothing is faster than the d500 except the d5 which I believe from my experience is even. Mirrorless cameras including sonys do great in normal light. But in low light they all struggle. Nothing beats a Nikon camera not song not canon when it comes to being in a dark room and getting the job done. The d500 sees in the dark period no assist necessary. I’ve heard the xt3 has better lowlight af acquisition and that minus 3 or 4 and yet to have tried it so cannot comment by I heard it’s great. I love love love the Xt1 it’s the one camera I wish I still had it is the best portrait camera for outdoor photography. Give me one of those baby’s and a 90f2 all day outdoors and I can edit xt1 shots to look exactly like real film. No camera does it quite the same.

one of the main point of mirrorless camera is to have a small interchangeable camera. If you like big camera that you can hold better than why not just use DSLR. They are way better than any mirrorless camera esp their AF system. Nonsense.

I think the battery grips defeat the purpose of the fuji x-t1 and x-t2. You're going into DSLR territory

That’s only if you’re getting the Fuji gear to save weight. Most people aren’t switching to mirrorless just for the size.

What is wrong with you people? XT20 is not a professional camera. It's a small travel and cheaper yet high quality stuff that Fuji had put into this camera light and interchangeable small camera, it's expected you will not be having all the bell and whistles of the XT2. If Fuji implement the weather proofing, bigger viewfinder, and iso dial, then might as well just carry the dslr with you with everything that you need. If you need all that MUST HAVE buy the XH-1 or Nikon D750

X-T2 is a little easier to use. Faster processes, face detect, more muted colour science, better white balance algorithms, and the like. X-T1 is more fun, because you don’t have to panic about having a super expensive camera, if you’re a bit of a masochist: the colours are fun to figure out and live with, which is reminiscent of film. 16mp is enough, and doesn’t show up as grainy as 24mp, focus assist is a button, not an easily breakable wheel push.

Xt1 has better colors than the Xt2. But Xt2 performs better.

Jerry M it has to do with skin mostly. Nikon even in raw so pleas don’t say anything about shooting in raw. I am talking about raw. Nikon has a green Hue within the skin tones. Xt2 is magenta (which is easy to fix) the best skin tones varies from camera to camera in the rendition of the colors. Canon is by far the best for this. Xt1 is very good at this as well. When they say film it’s because film gets skin very accurate and right. (This being standard film types. Not chemically treated or specialty film) Nikon D700, D3s, D4, 810 are great D3s and D700 most film like and the best. Canon 5d and 1d series is great that means all variants. Xt1 is great. GFX looks good never used it. Phase one is amazing. (Prob best) now in Lightroom we can fix anything but that’s not really true. Lol hard to get that green from Some Nikons and sonys out. Sony recently changed the color science and it’s getting better.

Jerry M you shoot film black and white. Because color does effect it. There are orange red green that effects how black and white effects the skin too. If it will be dark skin light skin etc.

Eric - you should take this video down now. I watched it ages ago and it was very good. However, it seems a bit disingenuous now, because you don't even own a fuji anymore. I remember seeing a while ago where I think it was the D850 you swapped over to. I tried to re-watch this but couldn't because it kept playing over in my head 'he doesn't even own any Fuji's now'! I’m not sure I understand your thought process, Philip? I’ve been a Nikon user since day 1 and I added the Fuji’s to my kit for a year and a half. I described very well that I sold my Fuji kit simply because I had too much gear. That doesn’t mean that my thoughts in this video are invalid. Again, not sure I see your thoughts behind taking the video down. Thanks
