Great video! Helpful and informative as always - thank you Matt. AlsoI love the way this is edited. Really cool and really engaging. These are certainly two beautiful lenses but for me the 110 just shines!

I got the GF110mm lens today. My previous portrait king reference was my Zeiss 135mm f/2 Milvus lens, which incidentally does cover the GFX sensor, but I finally got a proper portrait lens for the GFX system now. The rendering is so special.

When I had the 100s and 50s, I picked up the 80 with high hopes and it felt like a lower build quality kit lens in comparison and image quality appeared to be lower on a few technical fronts. Aside from not particularly liking the focal length in comparison to the 110, the contrast difference and colour appeared to be on different planets between the two so I kept the 110 and sold the 80. To each their own with these subjective output judgements but I felt that my images with the 110 had a more pleasant quality when shooting people.

Great video. I love both lenses when I was in the Fujifilm GFX camp. I am now in the Hasselblad X2D camp. When I did have the 110 I thought it was just a little bit better than the 80. I would love to see a comparison between the Hasselblad 80mm 1.9 and the Fujifilm 80mm 1.7 . Can you make that happen? Please.

Cann0t judge on the 110 (yet), the 80 on my 100ii rarely misses focus. But I do sit and bend, I never focus via the back screen.

I had it on the 100s and it was decent enough with it shooting events minus the freezing issues then. I had to sell the combo but now have the 100 ii and got the 80 back and thinking of adding the 110 or the 250. I had the 110 with the original 50S and I miss it but the 80 has been great and I can imagine how it is with the 100ii. Which I’ve tried little with so far but am impressed how this camera transforms all of the GF lenses

Hi Matt what gfx lens do you recommend for product photography?

  • @VizionZine

Both of those lenses can be had for much lower prices if purchased used. I got my 110 for $1400 and the 80 for $1100 which are great prices in my opinion. I also snagged the 45 for $750. The 110 is absolutely amazing and by far the best portrait lens I have had the pleasure to use/own. I also really like the 80 but mostly use it in tighter spaces or if I want a softer more dreamy look.

I used and owned the 110mm with the original GFX100 and I loved it. Now I use the 80mm on a GFX50S2 and surprise surprise, I love it. I do miss the slightly more compression of the 110, but shooting boudoir and similar the 80 is way more useable indoors. I really have not noticed any AF issues as I still use small single point focus and either focus recompose or joystick to place the spot alongside back button focus. I use the GFX50S2 as I found the 100mp files to be too big for my usage (but wow gorgeous). Again with the contrast only AF, my style of focus does not suffer too much. I have used the 80 also for reportage (similar to a 50), landscape (unique focal length) and even still life. But maybe thats because my MF kit is a single lens kit and I find work arounds with what I have to do what I want to achieve. Anyway… absolutely zero complaints.

How does the 50sii compare to the 100 mk1? I’m trying to decide between these

@@OfAngelineThe 100s has a better EVF (slightly better refresh rate) and Phase detect AF. Most other things are quite similar. If you don’t need speed (relative to MF world) or 100MP then the 50sii is still excellent

I didn’t like the 80 1.7 and i hated the shutter lag on it so i sold it. I still have the 110 yet i don’t use it enough to justify keeping it.

I don't know and need the 80 because the 110 renders very lovely - like my Nikon 1.2/85 or 1.8/135 - I will never need other portrait lenses than these triumvirate

Here's a simple rule for everyone: when comparing portrait photos taken with lenses A and B, if most areas in the images have the same brightness but the face in the photo taken with lens A is brighter than the face in the photo taken with lens B, it means lens A has worse low-frequency spectrum transmission. The camera compensates for this by increasing the exposure in the darker areas to match the brightness of lens B, making the face appear a bit overexposed. So, an 80's performance in dark areas is clearly better than a 110's, but the trade-off is a slight loss in resolution. This is because many lenses that perform poorly in dark areas use low-dispersion glass, which has worse low-frequency spectrum transmission. When dispersion control is improved, resolution also improves, but the transmission of light in dark areas suffers. This trade-off significantly affects skin texture when taking portraits, which is why, from a scientific standpoint, the 110 doesn't outperform the 80.

I have used almost all gfx combinations except for the 100s and the 110. I noticed the 80 shows some fringing that I did not see with the 110. AF is worse for sure but worked ok. I did miss shots of child portraits obviously 😂
