I have a collection of medium format lenses from about a decade ago when I actually shot film. I picked up a GFX recently and I'm glad I have a decent collection of medium format glass to just throw on there. I'm really loving the Bronica SQ 40mm f4 and the massive Sonnar 180mm f/2.8. The Planar 80 2.8 is also a great walk around lens. (I picked up all those lenses and a half-dozen more for dirt cheap back in the day).

Excellent real world review. It’s images in the real world that truly matter. Those Mamiya lenses are, what, 1980-90 vintage? Not surprised the Mamiya zoom was soft. In that era, zooms were normally poor quality and most professionals didn’t (wouldn’t) use them. Excellent assistant, BTW! Really liked the portrait of your son with the Mamiya lens.

    Thought I'd share my sharpness test results. I don't think I'll be able to make a video about it anytime soon... I've tested all my Fuji GFX and Mamiya M645 lenses with Kipon adapter on my 50R using a focus chart and they show excellent sharpness at their sweet spot. Here are my results and aperture recommendation (best in parenthesis): Fuji GFX 63mm f/2.8 - 2.8ok ,4 , 5.6, 8, 11 (8) 50mm f/3.5 - 5.6, 8, 11 (8) Mamiya M645 35mm f/3.5 N - 5.6, 8, 11, 16 ok (8-11) 45mm f/4 N - 11, 16 (11) 80mm f/4 N Macro - 5.6, 8, 11, 16 ok (8) 80mm f/4 Macro - 8, 11, 16 ok (8) - more contrast than N 120mm f/4 N Macro - 5.6, 8, 11 (8) 150mm f/2.8 A - 5.6, 8, 11 (8) - possibly my preferred M645 lens 300mm f/5.6 N - 5.6, 8,11 (8)

Hello .! I work pro with Pentax 645z , tried not long ago a GFX plus adapter and my Pentax vintage lenses and results are very good . No Electronics , and no autofocus , but a lot of valuable character in vintage lenses , that I do appreciate , and they are much cheaper and not so heavy as GFX lenses .

Regarding edge-sharpness, bear in mind the M645 lenses are designed for a larger image circle, so they should have an advantage on the smaller GFX sensor. I use a Samyang 24mm f/3.5 tilt-shift on my 50R with a dumb adapter. It’s a similar spec to the Canon 24mm TSE but with manual aperture control, which is great. Been delighted with the sharpness. Also, the GF35-70 is a relative bargain and good performer. May be too wide for what you need though.

You should try the Pentax 105mm f2.4 which is stellar imho. Usually, vintage zooms are not very sharp, but I found the Yashica ML 75-150 f4 to perform very well on my Hasselblad X1D. It is a lens for 35mm cameras but amazingly fills the frame with only a slight vignette at one zoom end, contrast is good, though not right from f4. I have found many lenses for 135 cameras that perform well on the larger sensor, but I’m especially surprised by the Yashica lenses even down to the 35mm f2.8 lens, the widest I have tried.

as a GFX shooter I found this really interesting. I shoot landscape 99% of the time and have the 23, 32-64 and 100-200 but am always on the lookout for something interesting though ideally I'd like something really wide (wider than the 23 anyway). If Fuji don't bring out a 20-45 (ish) then I'll look down the adapted lens line. I’ve been using Mamiya M645 lenses on 50R as well... Some are excellent, others less so... It’s a bit of hit or miss... One of my preferred is the 80mm macro. I use it for film repro work (all formats) and they are just the best so far. I’m sure the Fuji macro will be better on color rendition, but for the work I’ve been doing the Mamiya is perfect. And a fraction of the price of mew Fuji glass...

The Mamiya 150mm f/3.5N lens is a wonderful lens. Did you consider this as well? I know KEH doesn't have any of these on their site right now. On 645 this lens is approximately 90mm equivalent full frame focal length. Because the GFX50R sensor is smaller than film 645, is 150mm just too long for you? Also, sites like KEH have been just bottomed out on available gear stock ever since COVID-19 struck. They have a fraction of the options for sale now that they did 18 months ago. Don't get me wrong, I love KEH and their customer service, but I haven't been able to find much that they do have in stock anymore. Their well is currently pretty dried up and prices reflect the higher end of the spectrum with fewer options.

I’m right on the edge of investing in a new to me digital MF camera body and my two of course are either the GFX50s or the X1D. I LOVE the design of the Hasselblad but how the Fuji systems are priced used now it’s hard to over look that and coming and still using an XT3 I know the camera system. I do like the idea of adapting the Mamiya lenses though to the GFX like a 45mm, 80mm and 110mm which I could probably get all 3 for the cost of 1 GF lens. I’m not looking for absolute insane critical sharpness but I want some character. I’m just wondering if I would miss out not getting the X1D instead. The only thing that’s really holding me back with the X1D is the issue adapting lenses bc of only using electronic shutter and the $$$$ associated with longer lenses. The GFX has a much bigger lens line up and when adapting older lenses you can really get some longer glass for some really unique looks.

Good review. I have seen similar results on my GFX 50R, but with 3 Pentax 645 manual focus lenses. The lenses: 35mm, 45-85mm, and 80-160mm used with an adapter. Bought the 3 for less than $500. Right now the only Fuji GF lens I have is the 50mm, which I really like. The Pentax performance is very good in my landscape photography. For example, 50mm on the 45-85 is hard for me to discern significant differences from the Fuji 50mm. I plan to save up and buy another Fuji lens such as the 45-100, or the 32-64, fyi.

@@BlazejMarczak I should also like to report that I originally ordered an adapter from Kipon. However, at the time it was not available and it was not known just when it would be available. Hence, I cancelled the order and ordered the Fotodiox. The reviews I read indicated the Kipon was better. But, here I am with the one I have. On a scale of 1 to 5 I give it a 2 or a 3. It works, but it has some issues. One is that there is a metal tab thingie where the Pentax lens attaches that releases the lens. That is a problem in that it is very easy to hit that tab and have the Pentax lens drop off. I have had this happen to me twice; fortunately no harm as the lens did not fall on rocks and the like. Bottom line is you have to be very careful and baby the adapted setup. Second, to adjust the aperture, all you have to work with is a series of circles with increasing sizes to denote the aperture. (Procedure: set adapted lens to "A" for its aperture. Turn the Fotodiox adapter all the way over to the largest size circle. For the Pentax-A 645 45-85 lens, that corresponds to f4.5. Move the adapter ring over to a certain number of stops until you hit what you think is the aperture you want, like f11. In the 45-85 example, I use the 3rd circle to the left of the far right one for what I think is f11. This is not precise, but I have learned to live with it.) Third, my adapted lenses do not focus to infinity. I find that to be ok with me since I am shooting manual and use focus peaking anyway, I am able to get sharp focus if I take my time. The key to all this is that if I move along at a slow pace, I find I get decent images with my Pentax lenses.

I prefer manual focus, and have not liked the AF experience on any cameras I've owned. I now shoot exclusively on MF glass with adapters. I don't like the plasticky feel of modern lenses - they just feel cheap to me, and the MF feel is terrible. I prefer the juicy, fluid feel of a knurled rubber ring on a full metal lens. Same goes for aperture - I prefer the manual click ring any day. I've most recently been shooting a FijiFilm XPro2 with a variety of Contax/Zeiss, Zeiss (M42) and Nikon glass with adapters, and love it. I just got a GFX50R, with adapters for my current 35mm format lenses, but will gradually get Medium Format glass with adapters. I have one chinese (Venus Laowa 17mm F/4) on the way for landscape/astrophotography. Perhaps the GF lenses are a different experience ;) I'd love to try one just to see if it could offer good aperture/MF feel plus AF when desired. Anyway, great video!!!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • @ldstirling
    @ldstirling2 жыл бұрын

When you're talking about how these Mamiya lenses perform on your GFX50, and you're comparing them to Fuji GFX prices, I can totally see why you'd be happy with them, to save over $6500. It's very apparent that the Mamiya 55-110mm f/4.5N lens is not up to the same level as either the Mamiya 80mm or 110mm f/2.8. However, if you're actually shooting a Mamiya 645, using 120 film, then I think the 55-110mm f/4.5N looks a bit more attractive. I bought one of these zoom lenses to use with my M645 1000s because of the flexibility it offers and because it lets me shoot wider angle for less. A Mamiya 55mm f/2.8 prime lens costs $250-300, or at least double the cost of the 55-110mm zoom. And while spending $250-300 doesn't sound like a lot compared to the price of Fuji GFX lenses, I am willing to trade a bit of image quality for flexibility and value. I already own 80mm f/2.8 and 150mm f/3.5 lenses for my M645, and to spend nearly $300 for a 55mm f/2.8 prime lens wasn't in my budget. So far I've been very happy with my zoom, especially for the price I paid (~$100).

They steer you towards their lenses by not telling you that other lenses can be adapted very successfully to it, thereby lowering the threshold that you need to get into this camera. The lens is always what counts. The box behind it much less so. Remember the ad campaign “ Is it as good as a Xerox?”

Are the affordable repurposed lenses good enough for you? You appear to be shooting mid day in full sun so like lenses and medium everyone has their own take on things. I do not own zooms. 35, 645 and 67 formats. I usually require critical focusing for needle work, eyelashes or lettering. Any degree of soft will not cut it.

I think your 45-100mm Fuji is either defective or your focus is off by a lot. I have the same lens and it's absolutely 100% tack sharp beyond f4.5-5.0 up until f13 on the GFX 50S. (beyond f13 you'll see softness due to diffraction). Even excellent vintage primes are not able to keep up with it, except for maybe the Mamiya 120mm Macro (but even that one has a hard time vs the Fuji 120mm in the corners)

I guess you do not need to go through all mamiya 645 lenses to find gems. It's been done and dusted many times over. 80mm is okay, 120mm macro is poor man's Zeiss 120mm on contax645. The rest not really worth the effort. Wider end Pentax 645 A35mm is a real gem. In fact, you said unless print big, does anyone care that much to your work? I guess it depends how much pixel peeper you are. Playing with nice gear is a separate type of enjoyment to photography itself, but fun nevertheless. Otherwise why Fuji GFX? X system is nice enough for Instagram Flickr or normal size prints.

44*33 is closer to full frame 24*36 than 56*45 ... I think u will have better luck with longer full frame lenses...

I'm more a wide angle man, and prefer 28mm with a 35 mm system, but I also like good tele lenses. Think I have found some good wideangels for about $ 300 each in Nikkor 28/3.5 shift and Olympus 35/2.8 shift. Both of those will cover GFX with a good margin, and can be used also for panoramas.

I had the 55mm f2.8 combined with a fotodiox shift adapter on my X-H1; impressingly sharp . That‘s about 44mm in the gfx.

@@josephschimmer302 I have a very wacky lens, in Olympus 55/1.2. It will not cover the GFX, but I think it will be nice with rectangular photos wide open, and I am very excited to try it.
