Just love the GFX system...own a GFX 50r for almost a year and still smile ear to ear when processing the files.

I see that this is 5 years old. I now subscribe to your Paper Arts blog. I've wanted a GFX or other MF system for some time now but in the last two years I've started doing more and more architectural work for clients. I have been using my Canon R5 and Canon's 24mm T/S lens. It's a great combo and I've been happy with it. But I also know MF files would give me something more. Still it's hard to part with the $ when clients have been happy. This week I got serious about a GFX and had to decide which body. The 100's are so amazing but so expensive. After some research and some soul searching on what would give me what I want and what I really didn't need I decided this original 50s body was it. And it just happened I got an email from a very reputable dealer I've worked with over the years had one used body for sale for $1400 bucks. Of course accessories I want and need doubled that but I still can't wait for it to arrive. I have several architectural shoots coming up as well as a six-day ad campaign shoot for a non-profit. I truly enjoyed what you had to say about the camera. All the things I desired when I first wanted one several years ago are still there.

Wow, has it really been 5 years?? Congrats on making the leap. I think oyu will be very happy with the GFX. I still ove it. Funny side note is that I'm currently selling my GFX 50S and probabnly buying a second GFX 100 as a backup. Best camera I've owned.

... I love my Fuji GFX and my lenses (23, 32-64, 110, 100-200 and 250) and just looking at the files produce fills my heart with joy!!! The slight increase in weight from a 4/thirds is fine to damp the fine tremor of an old timer... Excellent review of an excellent camera... Congrats!!!

@@lespicker I think you might be older then me, but anyway, certainly we are in our sixties and "square" (as the younger generation says now...) I think they should pay attention to the Old Timers as we still have a couple of tricks up our sleeves... I am so square that I decided I would process the GFX files in the square format... I use the "excess" on the sides (or top & bottom) to do minor framing adjustments or to perspective correction... perhaps it's just a youth trauma for not owned ever a Hasselblad 50C, a couple of Planars and a couple of Softar filters.... Sometimes I even use the GFX in a super square way, without the viewfinder, composing with the screen but with a black cloth over the back of the camera and my face... and then yes, I get those super weird looks from people... Keep well Mr Lester, it was a pleasure watching the video and this small chat with you...!

@Lester Picker ... really? Are we so old...? or are the the youngsters so ignorant...? Well, english is not my native language, but square is a word good enough... In photography we refer to the format as "square" or 6x6... The youngsters started using the word square as "old fashioned"... well, I think as a retribution we could call them as "shapeless" (and that would be even too flattery and a compliment...) The other day I asked one who was taking photos in broad daylight using a tripod (a bad quality, flimsy one...) why was he using it... He answered he was taught in school ("photography"?) to do so! REALLY? In our region we have a most magnificent light, strong and warm... (often I have to use ND or polarizers to bring down the light to manageable levels...) And I am sure he did not switched off the stabilization... Well, I think you understand what I mean... Stay well, be safe... WebDesign and enjoy taking photos...!

Thank you very much for that very informative video. I once had a Mamiya7 and Fuji GSW. But nowadays i only have Panasonic GH5 and G9. Actually i am looking for some bigger format and i like mirrorless. I am torn between the Panasonic S1R and the Fuji GFX. What i miss at GFX is a 30mm TS lens for architecture and landscape and some more faster F2.0 or 2.8 lenses. I like blurry foregrounds and playing with a shallow dof… At the L-mount i have a huge choice of lenses. But i like the GFX files and that they are now supported by CaptureOne. After watching your video i tend again more to GFX. But again, there are so many nice fast lenses for L-mount… ;-) I think i have to rent both systems for at least one week because it is so difficult to make a decision…

Georg: I understand your being torn by the different systems. At these price points I think that renting both for a week would be the best thing to do. Best of luck with that and let me know what you decided.

In a moment of lunacy I agreed to shoot a musical festival at a local bar. 9 hours with the GFX 50s on a wrist strap (I never use a neck strap), and it was like it was part of my arm. Never once did I feel the weight. Imagewise, I obviously struggled with the light and contrast detect at times, but I got many keepers and the best had that stunning Rolleiflex vibe in spades. Love it!

Hi Les, was great to have seen your video, “VERY GOOD":. I am not a young guy, and rather like yourself, but have great experience, over the last forty years, as pro photojournalist. As a hobby in my retirement, I just bought a GFX50s, and like you say, I share the same views. I am delighted with every thing about the 50s. I got the extension viewfinder, which I would not do without , but I am a little niggled with the fact that the diopter setting will not lock in place? As it can very easily be moved accidentally, particularly when moving the then extended viewfinder! Has anyone else had this problem? But the Camera is fantastic. Cheers, Doug (from Scotland)

Great review on my next camera for sure , not long now. As for tilt shift you can use the Techart adaptor and Canon TS lens with great success . Looking into that set up also :) All the best from Australia

Thank you, Saranathan. I also have a D850 which I use for wildlife. But I plan to buy the new GFX100 and use it for wildlife, too. It has a higher frame rate and I prefer wider angle images of wildlife than super telephoto.

Thanks for the review Lester. Really appreciate the insights of a fellow GFX shooter. I've been using the system for just over a year and am very pleased with it. The one area I find frustrating though is finding an appropriate bag, preferably a backpack, that will accommodate the system. I have the GFX with tilt adapter, vertical grip, and 23, 45, 63, 120 and 32-64 lenses. I was curious what bag you are using. I don't necessarily need a bag that will accommodate the entire system all the time but would like to find a bag to carry as least the body, grip and three to four lenses. I can attach the tilt adapter in the field when needed. Any suggestions you might have would be most welcome.

John: Thanks for writing. The bag I use for both my GFX system and for my Nikon system is the Rotation 180 by Mindshift Gear. Mine is the old version, which I have used for 10 years, even when I had my Hasselblad H4D cement block! I carry my GFX with 23 or 32-64 attached, plus my 120 and 250 and whichever of the two lenses is not attached. I must say it is also the most comfortable pack I have ever used. Now a question for you... What tilt-shift adapter do you use? Best wishes, Les

@@lespicker Hi Lester. Thanks for the reply. I've looked at the Mindshift 180 but didn't think it had enough room for the GFX and lenses, however, I'll take another look based on your feedback. Sorry for the confusion about the tilt adapter. I'm was referring to the viewfinder tilt adapter, not a lens adapter. I've found with the adapter attached, along with a vertical grip, the GFX is far too tall to fit in most bags, and those it does fit there seems to be excessive pressure placed against the viewfinder. Thinking I'll just attach the adapter when needed. Thanks again for the information.

Good to know that the GFX-50S works well at -40 and above. Does RRS L-Bracket works without exposing elements during the winter? Do you use remote trigger or timer during winter? I am planning to take mine out this Albertan winter unlike the last one. Any tip on shooting in extremely cold weather? I use Heat 3 systems, but I have recently migrated to this cold country and hence my body is not yet used to the albertan winter. My fingers go numb quite fast (maybe an hour at the most).

Yes I fully agree that the GFX 50s , should have a faster frame rate of at least six to eight frames per second ! I also think the rotating eye view finder is exceptional for this camera ! I am taking a real good look at this medium format camera to possibly see if I can push the GFX 50S to another level . Wildlife , Sports Photography ! Don't think that Fuji GFX 50s will be disappointing !

Lester, the Pentax 645z is just as good, ever used it??

Since the viewfinder has a built in adjustable diopter, you can easily adjust it for wearing glasses or not.

Mr. Picker , question is it possible for Fuji cameras to make the GFX 50s medium format camera . To shot 10 to 12 are more frames-per-second , along with a faster autofocus system in the near future ? I must admit that I'm a strong believer in Fuji !!!

I am leaning toward the 50r but that articulating evf available with on the 50s is a struggle! I would have loved to see the option on the 50r but I suppose that is one of the reasons why the 50r is cheaper. BTW great video!

Finder, don't rule out the 50s with the articulating viewfinder. Try renting a setup and see if that combo meets your needs.

We share a common background. Have been photographing since 1970. My first 35 mm camera was a Bell & Howell with two screw in lenses. Traded that for a Nikon Nikkormat because of the 125 flash sync. Have used Nikon ever since. Now I’m looking to upgrade to medium format so your video was loaded with practical, useful information. With regard to the viewfinder do you take off your glasses when looking through the EVF? Which photo editing software do you use. I’m way behind you here. I don’t have digital editing software so major learning curve for me. Thank you for sharing this info.

Hi Robert! As far as the viewfinder goes, it has a diopter adjustment wheel, so it will work with or without glasses. Personally, I have it adjusted to work without my glasses, but you get to choose. I use both Lightroom and Capture One. I suggest that since you are just getting into digital processing that you start with Lightroom. It's the 800 pound gorilla in the digital world, so there are tons of good videos on their tutorial website. I also suggest you take a hands-on workshop to get you started. Most community colleges offer them. I was in your position about 15 years ago. Just take your time and practice and soon you'll master this. Best of luck!

I own both the GFX50R&S and I like both cameras.

The issue with battery useage is less due to the sensor and more because it's a mirrorless camera design. That means the sensor and display(s) are always on during shooting. With a regular SLR the displays are only used during reviewing the images or during live-view. If you had live view running all the time, the Nikon would also chew through batteries like the Fuji.

Renato, unfortunately I have been told by Fuji USA that there are absolutely no plans for TS lenses for this system. They feel the market would be too small. I am super bummed by that, so I am exploring other options using adapters.

Lester Picker Oh no... I was really hoping they will produce the tilt and shift lenses for this camera. Yes, it’s true they are speciality items, but there is a market for them. I think that the combination of the tilt and shit lenses together with the GFX series would place Fuji in a different Plato than any other camera manufacturer.

Hi, brilliant review! I am seriously looking at GFX system. I am a fine art wildlife photographer using D850’s .. I mainly shoot elephants and other wildlife that is not moving fast... (not one for action in wildlife). How do you find the autofocus and do you use continuous? I’ve seen the GFX 100 which looks like it has great autofocus but I worry about the file sizes and perhaps it’s a bit overkill. A 50s would be great... just need it to have reliable focus for slow moving subjects ..? Many thanks

Hi James. Difficult choices, eh? I suspect our approaches to wildlife photography are similar. I have never shot 8 or 10 or more FPS. I wait for the right action or mood and take small bursts of 2-3 images at most. I gave up Nikon and have happily embraced the Fuji GFX system. I can tell you that if you make the correct adjustments in the GFX 100 menu, you can get excellent, tack sharp images of wildlife. After you buy your GFX 100, if you write to me via my website I'll link you to an article that gives you the correct settings. In terms of file size, so long as you have a late model computer you should be fine. Best wishes!

I was thinking of waiting to see what fuji release next year in terms of the GFX system but I’ve found a well priced GFX 50s with the tilt viewfinder and spare batteries and grip for a good price. If I use it to accompany my d850s ... really for stationary but also slow moving subjects, do you think the autofocus will manage? When I say slow moving, I mean an elephant walking ... thank you so much !

@@jameslewin6577 The 50S will be fine. I used it in Uganda and Tanzania on my last trip there, as well as in Antarctica and it focused quickly, reliably and with gorgeous files. You will not regret the purchase. I would suggest you stick with Fujinon lenses to get the maximum performance.

Do you know of any medium format camera that shoots faster than three frames per second which are considered pretty fast for a medium format camera. A shoot with a Pentax 6 x 7 medium format camera I never even thought about the frames per second when I’m using that camera..

My Fujifilm GFX 100 shoots at 5 FPS, but only in bursts of 14 images. Still, I have rarely used that capacity. The GFX 100 is a marvelous machine.

The 50S is amazing rendering panos. If you are coming from aa DSLR at 3:2 ratio, you do have to get sed to the 4:3 format, but that is a very minor adjustment. The files are spectacular, but it will take longer for your computer to process them and merge into the pano.

Great content. Awful audio. Please fix. Btw, the problem w the RRS and changing batteries is a problem with RRS design and not w GFX.

Hi Dilon. Thank you for writing. The price for a new GFX 50S has come down and you can pick up good used ones for around $3,000. There are several other lens systems you can use with the GFX system with the use of an adapter, including Sony, Nikon, Canon, Pentax and others.

i have the gfx 50r and a wooden grip i use the 32-64mm a fantastic good lens to be a zoom vs prime lenses i have also adapted my Carl Zeiss lenses to gfx50r they renderers Nice but compared to new fuji gf lenses they dont manage the hig res sensor so well as Fuji gf lenses does. they are softer but renders nice

Thanks, Ted. Sounds like an interesting adaptation. But, you are right, Fuji glass is hard to beat.

I bought an adapter and my canon TSE 90mm works very nicely with this camera and with plenty of room for all movements. I tend more to use one of my 4x5s with a graflock/universal back and an adapter plate.

Finn: Thank you for writing. I have explored the Cambo Actus setup and it is simply too unwieldy to carry everywhere. Also, it does not allow for use of Fuji lenses. I am hoping that Fuji comes out with some dedicated TS lenses or else a TS adapter that will fit several lenses, like the Hasselblad HTS.

Hello! I really liked your video! Especially about the EVF-TL1 angle adapter! That's why, as an old Nikon fan (since 1988), I would now like to get into the GFX system.
