FujiFilm GFX 50s: I Didn't Expect it Be Compelling - But It Is (to me)

Ғылым және технология

I toyed with the purchase of a Contax 645 once; more recently I tested the Hasselblad X1D. Still, I left the world of full frame when I sold my Canon 5D II to step DOWN to an APS-C Sony a6300 and Micro Four Thirds Panasonic GH5, so I was pretty sure I'd find the GFX 50s unappealing. Especially since late last year I named the Sony a7R III - with full knowledge of the heresy I was committing -- my 2017 "medium format" camera of the year.
The GFX 50s surprised me.

I had the gfx on loan for a weekend, and delivered it back saying to myself -"no, this is not for me"...a month later I bought one with the 32-64mm and the 110mm. And I LOVE it more and more each time I use it :-)

Great review, I've been shooting with the GFX for over a year now (Since release) and I'll tell you..it is by far one of the best cameras I've ever used. I've shot the Canon 1DX, Sony A7rii, the Pentax 645z, Canon 5d M3 and none of them have helped me evolve as a shooter like the GFX. I will add this, if you are a canon shooter and have significant canon glass and that's keeping you back, don't let it. The GFX has several adapters that allow for the Canon glass to work wonderfully on the camera...heck, right now, the 85mm f1.4 L IS is a constant companion to my GFX.

For the first part of this video I was like look at those skin tones! What is he using? And then you were like I use apsc and gfx is no good for video so I'm thinking this footage does not look like any sony aps c video I've seen especially with that dof. Maybe he is brilliant at post production. I'll be taking a hard look at this system.

Two things struck me when I picked up the GFX for the first time: 1970s Soviet era consumer car aesthetics, and a mechanical exposure triangle staring me right in the face. It was a startling experience. Despite the agricultural appearance the camera, it was incredibly nimble in my hands. To me, those were all big ticks in the box ( I like a camera with genuine character), but what swung it for me was the image output. I never get bored with those files. They’re gorgeous. Moving from the world of Sigma foveon meant that medium-ish format speeds were not going to upset me. Curiously, I also leaned heavily on A7Rs (no laughing at the back, Brits), for professional jobs, but I never liked the output of the files. Go figure.

Thought I would comment here because I really loved your style of presentation and the review you gave was most helpful I thought. I am currently seriously considering a medium format camera to replace my Nikon D800 for photographing artworks ready for large format giclee printing. I am looking for improved dynamic range and colour accuracy as well as of course a bit more resolution. I was thinking earlier about a Pentax 645Z but recently started paying close attention to this GFX 50S. And from the reviews I have seen I am seriously favoring this camera at the moment. My only concerns are that all my expensive Nikon glass is now probably no use to me and the Fuji glass is pretty expensive. That said I do appreciate it is superb quality. I was wondering if any users out there (yourself included) had a recommendation for which lens should be my first choice for this job?

Your D800 may give up less to these guys than you'd think, depending on image size and viewing distance. But with this said (and with the newly reduced price for the GFX50s), I'd look at the 63 and 110 - especially the 110, OMG.

It is an AMAZING system. I rented the GFX to try out and so far, it hasn’t produced anything more than my SL can at higher ISOs. There are things I wish the Hasselblad X1d had that this has. Hopefully, in the future, that tilt screen or EVF, remote shutter, and ability to change the focus point on the fly will migrate to the Hasselblad. I'll wait patiently, as both seem to not hit enough marks for what I want to step into the medium format world knowing what I lack or have with a full-frame.

I tried it to see if it would be a step up from my ff sony or pentax and the gain was not there at least for my use (stills in low light or very low light). The rest of the time I don't use FF and wouldn't used MF either since it's of no use. I could had considered it if it was a 100 mpixel sensor and had a proper focusing system but as it is I couldn't find IQ improvement justifying the drawbacks and there are many. In dark scenes I prefered working with the shots from the K1 and men people complaining about the pentax AF has not tried the GFX in low light. The same camera with 100 mpixel and a better AF (not quicker just reliable) could be useful for me on specific projects. I liked the body shape and ergo, the top screen, lenses etc. I'm waiting for either a new 645 from pentax or a new version of the GFX to get a MF system.

I have been trying to ignore the GFX50s, but the image quality keeps haunting me. When I realized that adapters are available for almost any lens I was gob smacked to realize that this, or the upcoming range finder version, fits my style almost perfectly. I own the original Sony A7, first generation. I have no Sony glass at all, just a collection of older Leica R lenses (The Summicron 50 R is kind of special). All I really need is a two lens kit with the Fuji and a few adapters to let me play with more vintage style renderings (slightly cropped perhaps). (Bye the way, samples I have seen using the Classic Chrome preset modified in the Color Settings to Enhanced Chrome High caused me to nerd all over myself!) Thank you once again for a very thoughtful, artful and non-combative presentation

I have been shooting with it exclusively since January and I love the hell out of the thing. I have the 23, 45, 32-64 and 110 and they are all gorgeous. While yes you can adapt, and I have, my experience has been that the GF lenses really do get vastly more out of it than anything else. The sigma Art 85 is sharp with the TechArt adapter, but the 50 is not, and the difference between it and the native 45 is striking. The 135 is supposed to be excellent as well but I don’t feel the need for it. Even my Mamiya 50 & 80 and Hassy 150 don’t do as well as the GF glass. It’s an investment but wow you just can’t “unsee” what it’s capable of. I can’t even imagine what the 100s is going to be like.

Thank you for the feedback! I have been excavating through the available on-line information and have come to the conclusion that native is the way to go. It appears that the delicious results from the camera are a summing of many little things. Using non-native glass will remove one crucial piece of the tower, and it comes crashing down to just very good. :) At least, that is what I can see from samples on-line. I also was bouncing back and forth between the GFX50s and the A7RIII. Mathieu Gasquet did a wonderful review of the two and concluded that he won't get the GFX because he could not take advantage of the extra quality often enough. He then posts images at the end from the A7RIII and the GFX. I was scrolling through the A7RIII images, which looked pretty good, then came the GFX images. I am looking at the web page on a projected screen in 4k, and the Fuji images have a sparkle and snap that is completely missing from the A7RIII images. Just the web page projected at 4k, no zooming in. You don't need a wall sized image to see the benefits. It will, however, encourage me to sharpen my skills.... :) I am ordering mine right after the Fuji announcement on the 25th. interesting I know when that at the point in my life last year I was look at the GFX or the X1D and was lucky that my local deal has both and let me take them out to do some testing for my self. Not having used Fuji other a point and shot or the last Hasselblad I use was a 500CM. The Fuji was not nice in the hand and difficult to use, the X1D was just so good in the hand and that was even with the old firmware. The differentes in the images was very close but the skin tone and white balance the X1D was nice for me. Now a year on and with a number of firmware update its even better. At the time there was only a 10% difference in price both expensive.

It is interesting what makes a good camera, people today really do tend to have ridiculous expectations of performance. Myself I just take photos, I just want a nice camera with classic prime lenses and stunning IQ. So what is important to me? Well build quality is top of the list and simplicity of interface. Cameras without a touch screen wont get a look in. Perhaps surprisingly its the useability of the EVF. Both my cameras, the Panasonic GX9 and Leica TL2 (yes I did buy the new model, poor credit card) have a tilting EVF. It is surprising how much that means to me. I could easily have bought the new flagship G9 with its stella EVF but, in my eyes it falls a long way short because it is fixed. I only use viewfinders when the sun is bright, never to judge quality just to compose and a fixed viewfinder now is next to useless to me. I love using my cameras and there is no way I could ever go back now. The tiltability is so much more important to me than the quality of the view. To me the Fuji tilting EVF makes the camera and I applaud them for doing it. I get the quality back home when i process the images and I know I can rely on my primes; I dont need to see the image quality in a viewfinder as I take it ;-)

Another great review, Hugh. I rented the GFX50S over the course of 5 days last September for my last professional motor race of the year for use in pitlane and paddock and found it just got out of the way when working; completely seamless. Which is saying something for a MF kit. If you ever get an opportunity to use one again, try out the 32-64 f/4 zoom; its really very impressive. Link to a pic: photos.imageevent.com/puma_cat/indycarsonoma2017/Porto%20Porsche.jpg Cheers!

I love the reference to Chris Bangle. I found his cars uglier than the south end of a northbound rhino when they were first released, but after a while the look started to work. Then it was everywhere. I see the same in a lot of Fuji's design language.

Great review and, as a Gfx 50s owner, I fully concur with your feelings for this camera. Great video quality too, did you use the 110? Here’s a test video I shot using adapted glass which works very well too. The only thing I miss badly is some stabilisation! vimeo.com/219210367

I think you touch on the classic issue with larger 'negative' sizes. To be able to shoot handheld you need higher ISO values compared to a smaller negative size, even shooting wide open (and thereby already compromising the potential gain in image quality) . Try shooting a 4"x5" 'hand' camera like a Linhoff (not Medium Format, but a good extreme example) with ie 100 ISO, almost impossible without a tripod even under ideal lighting conditions (lenses start at f 5.6), let alone 'available light'. This is where the smaller 'negative' will allways shine, usable aperture/shutterspeed/ISO combinations in real life documentary situations. In my opinion this is the real reason Medium Format lost out compared to 35mm, all in the film days of course. Medium Format had a very limited usable enveloppe. And I think the same logic still goes in the digital age. I think we see this in your example photographs. Beatifull rendering, but are the pictures very informative at the larger apertures? In other words, very limited creative use under these lighting conditions. IMO a smaller sensor sized camera would be much more apropriate and verstatile under these conditions.

The new Fujifilm GFX100S WILL have IBIS. And faster AF. And of course 100MPs :-) The reason, your Canon flash didn't work is, that while the physical layout of the TTL pins is the same for Fuji and Canon (you can use the Canon extension cables), the electronic layout is completely different. Tape down all pins except the middle one, and you're good to go. This is the same for all Fuji cameras

Just stumbled on your channel, very thoughtful and informative. Your content is right up my alley! I just have to say one critical thing. You may have been told this before, perhaps many times, but the awkward pauses are almost unbearable. It got to the point that I had to mute the video and just read the subtitles. Many people may find this endearing, however as much as I want to watch more of your videos, I don't think I'll be able too. This said, I wish you all the best and continued success.

It is butt ugly; hoping that will be remedied with the rangefinder format. Gosh Hasselblad know how to design a beautiful medium format camera. For whatever reason, I am sold on Fujifilm, probably their color science and film sims, so saving up for a GFX. Hopefully the rangefinder model is not too watered down. Love your videos!

GFX owner here since first released. I love the camera and the images it produces, but I rarely use it because I find it to be too ungainly and heavy for my liking. Thought it wouldn't be an issue, but I've been gravitating towards smaller is better. Probably the best thing to come out of my GFX is it lead me to discover Fuji X-series, with which I am elated. For landscape work where I want want lots of resolution / large sensor I opted for X1D to replace GFX. I wanted mirrorless and Sony is not an option for me since I don't like their product for a variety reasons. I wasn't too sure I'd like the X1D based on all the negative reviews so I rented before buying and wasted $250 doing so because I followed-up up with purchase. Yes, there's a lot to miss about the GFX (esp. the EVF) but the X1D is smaller, lighter and stealthier so I don't have people staring at me and asking me questions about my gear with the X1D as with the GFX. I did a fair amount of testing between the two and I also found myself liking the RAW files out of the X1D better then the GFX. The RAWs look stunning to me right out of the camera, with little or no adjustments required or desired. The GFX feels flatter / more neutral to me, but it takes only a little extra effort to closely match the X1D in post. Of course, that I prefer the X1D raws as shot is just my personal opinion and preference. I find the X1D to be very useable. I definitely prefer the Fuji controls layout, but part of usability / ergo is inherent in the smaller form factor and design of the X1D. Reliability hasn't been an issue for me so far (fingers crossed), and there have been several firmware updates since released so perhaps this explains my experience versus others. That said, I completely agree with your assessment that the GFX feels like a more mature product. There's been some really nice unexpected surprises as well. For example, the iPhone Mobile Phocus performs flawlessly for me, and with it's Live View mode I am able to compose and focus using my iPhone instead of hunching over camera in some cases. Initially, my expectations were low based my experiences with similar apps for other systems (Sony, Nikon, Fuji), but the iPhone / X1D combo is working so well for me that it takes the sting out of losing the GFX EVF / tilt combo -- dare I say even prefer it in some scenarios. However, must keep in mind that I only use the X1D for landscapes and I can't see this combo working as well (or at all) in other scenarios such as portraiture, street, etc. Love your videos and new subscriber as of recent. Thanks for the great work!

I have on old Fuji S3 which I've always loved. Now I have a few DX format Nikons, plus a full frame Canon. And after experiencing those cameras, not bad, but hardly compelling, well ... I'm desperate to get my hands on this new Fuji. I'd even sell my car to get it. Seems like a Lamborghini for the price of a Nissan.

Interesting review. And why do all cameras now have to be great video cameras?? Whatever happened to just stills? A camera shouldn't be criticised for little or no video capability, there are plenty of fish in the sea even just your mobile.... If a camera is great for stills, its a great camera.

Oh no Hugh, no criticism of yourself or your comments in the video. More of a generalised thought of mine that (any) cameras should be appreciated for being excellent picture making tools if that is what they are. Some cameras are clearly aimed at video use which can be judged on that basis. Let's hear it for well designed, pleasing to shoot, still cameras!!

Lets just be honest across the board. The larger the sensor the more lifelike and magical is the image. Sure, everyone wants AF that works (Panasonic 4/3 does not) everyone wants 4k video at 60fps. Everyone wants Canon's colors. But when you go to a Art Museum, you want to see one thing. Medium Format images. If you had Medium Format video you would think you were really there. If you had larger than Medium Format, you would think you had reached godlike status and was looking down on us lowly ants.

The Hubble takes pictures beyond our imagination out into the universe debunking the flat earthers but you certainly cant capture a tennis match with it. But for me I like epic. Its more weight, its more trouble, its more sweat and tears, but the results are epic.
