Federal Signal Thunderbolt 1000T
Waggener High School
Louisville, KY
Siren #7
Test recorded on July 12, 2011
Distance from siren: 518 feet
Picked up my bud Johnathan (jw870206 on here) and we headed to Waggener for the noon test. This siren sounded awesome, never dropping in pitch, and it doesn't show any signs of its age. Out of all the Thunderbolts in Louisville's system, this one is probably the cleanest. Its paint is fresh and it sounds awesome.
I could be wrong, but at around 2:59, is that the St. Matthews Ave. 2001 ringing in the distance? Could be!
As for the shakyness- I lost the attachment for my tripod and didn't make it to the store to get another. The "vibration" you are seeing isn't me shaking the cam, it is heat reflecting in the lens. It was a hot one, with the heat index over 115. Still, this was not really a smooth video and I will have a tripod for the August test.
Enjoy! These things are dying off fast!
EDIT: Not sure what that tiny box is under the rotator box. Anyone have an idea?

That thing sounds extremely healthy. My contact for the city recently told me that he thinks that this Thunderbolt is set on level 6, which is probably true, given it's pitch. Since this one has the later C series blower in it, it's probably one of the newest Thunderbolts in our system. I recorded the Kerrick TBolt yesterday, and it didn't sound quite as healthy as this one, but it still sounded good.

@computerdude5566 Awesome! I have been by to visit that siren (took me FOREVER to figure out how to get to that back parking lot) and it did look good. It is on my list of sirens to record in the near future!

The little box under the rotator is just a junction box for the piece of liquid tight that goes to the siren head. Also doubles as a pull box and final splice.

@LouisvilleTorn8o I believe one of the thunderbolts has been removed on wikipedia it says louisville has 39 thunderbolts but the siren map say we only have 38

@Trocks797 Because most of them have the conduit going directly into the rotator box of the siren. Liquid tight is a waterproof flexible conduit.

@97Siren That seems to be the consensous. I wish I knew all the different types of blowers, but the one at Wilder Elementary has a rare type of blower....cant remember the type...but it sounds VERY buzzy. You can find that in my video called "Tornado Warning June 22". It is around the 8 :50 mark.

@Trocks797 Wilder has an A1 blower, the same blower that was on the very first TBolts ever made, which were 1000's with the jail bar grill. A1 blowers are rarer for 1000T's than the other blower types. My uncle sent me pictures of the siren and the blower, but I haven't had a chance to do anything with them yet.

@computerdude5566 Funny you mention this. The EMA map is wrong. Louisville has 37 tbolts standing, but only 36 are active. The inactive Thunderbolt sits on top of the JCPS building (23). The 2001 in the parking lot now sounds with the system. The EMA map has the Portland Boys & Girls club listed as a t-bolt, but it is a 3T22. For the most up-to-date info on our system, see my map (the link is in the description).

A1 blowers are fairly common on 1000's, but not so much on 1000T's. I believe we have another one at Southern Middle School over on Belevue, which is about a mile from the Downs. You should try to record that one soon, since the whole thing is supposed to be either swapped out or replaced due to the old platform it's mounted on. Have you heard my recordings from the tornado outbreak?

@computerdude5566 I highly doubt it. Louisville will do everything they can to restore old sirens....which is awesome. The only reason that Thunderbolt is still sitting there is because its on top of a building, which complicates removal. Once they do remove it though, I can almost guarantee you they put it up somewhere else or replace a faulty siren (hint: Jtown high school).

This siren was removed sometime before June 2021... And then it magically reappeared with a fresh coat of paint sometime before today.

@@anindividual2893 I think that’s the plan eventually. They’ve taken several old sirens down over the past year and put them back up like was done here….Mainly because the pole they were on was at the end of its life.

@Trocks797 Yep. watch?v=MfmU5VHAgEE Concerning the Seneca TBolt, I believe that that back parking lot is next to a subdivision...You could just pull over in the subdivision, like I've had drivers do many times with other sirens, and you should be able to get a good video. St. Pius X Catholic Church is close to the school, but I don't know how close it is to the siren. I've got a recording of that TBolt from about a quarter mile away on my channel.

@computerdude5566 I believe the rotator on that one failed during the tornado warnings last month. Did it rotate during this test?
