Gilly fan here, but he did miss a few one-day matches, albeit not due to injuries or slump in form. He was rested a couple times to play Haddin in the Tri-series involving South Africa and Sri Lanka in 2006. He also took a break for the birth of his child in the Chapell-Hadlee series before the 2007 world cup. But yeah, he did play 96 test matches without a break. Unbelievable, if you consider the fact that he was Keeper and also the opening batsman in the limited overs

Gilchrist 100 test matches at number 7 with an average of 46.45, with 12 centuries at number 7, that's literally DOUBLE his nearest competitor. DOUBLE. In the entire history of test cricket. Dhoni has only 2 at number 7. No one is even close to gilly from this position, because no one else can make those scores from that late in the game. Dhonis average goes up to 38.09 when you look at his runs from all positions, because he was playing as early as number 3 which gave him the time to work up a decent innings without as much risk. If you take into account Gillys scores from other positions (sometimes 6) he has 17 hundreds with an average of 47.6. Imagine if he started at 3 like Dhoni has and had time to get himself in and craft innings after innings without having to rush. His average would probably be mid 50s with another 10 hundreds on the books. In the history of the game only 2 players who had the majority of their innings at number 7 had an average of just above 40 over their careers. There were times when gilly was over 50. He is hands down the best Batsman who wicket kept ever.

He literally scored 17 test centuries in 7 years. For a guy coming at no 7 those are some insane stats. For major part of his career he averaged in 50s. He can walk into any team as a batsman alone. The best ever & certainly a trend setter.

@@mubashirhumayoon522 he averaged 37 in ODIs, but given he struck at 94 (at a time when most were happy to strike at 70-80), and had a bloke by the name of Ricky Ponting to come in after him should his aggression not come off, this was perfectly fine. In tests he averaged 47, which any batsman would be more than happy with at the end of a career, while playing at #7, and striking at 80. He would absolutely walk into any team on earth at the time and even today.

@DRACONAR1US Excatly. Also, about 15 of those test centuries came at the time when the team need the most. Wk keeping is as tougher skill as bowling is, so his contribution to the team was equivalent to a genuine all rounder. Which is why he is renowned for redefining the role and will remain the best ever.

Watched this live and was literally laughing at the TV with my dad who's now passed. I can see him, beer in hand, enjoying every second. Good times. Love ya, dad.

Akram got him out a few times. Gilchrist was actually not as great against pace as people make out. Andy Flintoff exposed a weakness in his game by bowling around the wicket. Martin Crowe and Aravinda played pace much better Nd faced harder bowlers at their peak. In my eyes Gilly was fortunate not to face certain guys at their peak

No doubt he was a solid player. But if he faced peak Wasim in the early 90s Nd Waqar Nd Ambrose or McGrath he would of struggled. I still rate De Silva and Crowe better. Even though Gilchrist is rated higher generally

yeah, there was a game at Adelaide oval 06-07 i think, Sri Lanka vs Australia in a 50 over game, we smashed 'em in a few hours & then they played an official 20/20 over game after a 15minute break. that was towards the end of the era of dominance. however, do not forget that the mighty west indies had dominated Australia before us, like the English of old had done the same. cricket is an always will be an evolving sport, with moments of brilliance, defined by the individuals that make up its mixed historical importance.

There isn't and probably won't be anyone comparable to Gilchrist for a long time just like you will never have a batsman with a 99.9 average like Bradman or the ability to play in the first ever test match. Just get over and try to actually create your own history after playing 150 years of top flight cricket and even then you still will be lacking!

Imagine being trailing by 500+ runs and this guy is thrashing you to all parts of the ground.

For me he is the greatest wicket keeper batsman in history. He revolutionised the role of a wicket-keeper. He is the reason why we have so many keepers who have a great record as batsman too.

No that was Romesh Kaluwitharana, in 1996 he completely change the role of a wicket-keeper by opening the order. He paved the way for great wicket-keeper/batsmen like Sangakkara and Gilchrist who came later on. Gilchrist however was in a class of his own.

As an Englishman this test series was torture to watch, but also a privilege. The best dang test side the world has ever seen.

Gilchrist always hit the biggest sixes. Amazing player, and a gentleman to boot. I bumped into him in a shopping mall when he was in South Africa for the 2003 World Cup, and he was so friendly and humble.

Not just that, I remember Flinotff bowling wide yorkers when he was in 85+ to make sure he doesn't break the record and I think he ended up reaching the century just by difference of 1-2 balls.

I live in Perth and went to the game. Incredible innings between 4.30pm and 6pm! In front of his home crowd too! He was on pace to beat Viv's 56 ball masterpiece but in the previous over Hoggard decided to ball a few yorkers 1 metre outside off stump that he could not reach let alone hit - and the record was missed.

Adam Gilchrist was one of my most favorite batsmen. The mixture of aggression and style made his batting extremely delightful to watch.

Leeroy C test crickets is my favourite form of the game, and obviously he was amazing at that form of the game. All I’m saying, is that because he’s such an aggressive player, I would have loved to see him go into complete aggression mode, scoring at strike rates like 250+. Anyway, throughout his test career, he showed his aggression and technique.

Love that innings and remember it well. Back then when Gilly came in to bat I'd stop what I was doing hoping to see something like this. Seeing Freddie Flintoff watching one six go miles over his head is just beautiful. What a player Gilly was, in this case he turned the game on its ear in 60-odd balls and all with clean hitting - just magnificent.

The 6s he hit off Monty were great but the 6 off Hoggard at 6:01 was definitely the best shot of the innings What an amazing player he was, definielty one of the......if not the greatest wicket keeper batsmen to play the game

Gilly was my all time favourite player. I think what alot of people forget is that he was also a very fair player. Many times he got given not out but walked because he knew he was out. Don't see players do that.

My friend Dhoni is the greatest wicket keeper batsman ever even Shane Warne accepted it. He took over indian side during one of their darkest ever days and made them into world beaters, revolutionized cricket, he is Mr replaceable in Indian team. I admire Gilchrist but for me Dhoni followed closely by Gilly are two of the greatest wicket keeper batsman ever.

By cricketing skills it has to be gilchrist, if you need to go by complete team player dhoni might be getting this one.

WHAT a player. As an Englishman it was an utter joy to watch such an amazing player do what he did. Emptied the bars.

I still remember 2006-07 ashes series second test match at Adelaide. Australia needed some 170 runs to win in 35 overs or so. But that Australian team managed it so easily. Such level of determination to continue their dominance at that time. Its sad Cricket is no longer like that.

Gilly was a proper, Frontline bat not just a regulation keeper/bat. He was a thorough gentleman too. Always walked away when he felt was out. Loveable guy!

As a Gilly Fan, I always enjoyed his game as a kid but now I realise how it was soul crushing to the opposition

I watched this in a hostel in Melbourne, the whole room was glued to the big TV, we were all England fans but this was incredible to see. Live Test cricket felt like a T20 highlights package.

Sanga was great I’d say technically better batting wise but gilly brought that X factor to a already star studded team and when gilly use to walk out to the crease you knew not to leave your tv coz there was going to be fireworks as a kid I was a Ponting fanatic still am my favourite player but gilly got me pumped up when he was out in the middle

sandeep choura Sanga hardly avgd 40 as a keeper & mostly bashed the minnows. Gilly scored test tons mostly when it mattered. Sanga became a run machine post 2008 when he played just as a batsman, by the time which Gilly already retired. Gilly redefined the role and is the best ever.

After the disappointment of the 2005 series in England, the Aussies were hellbent on destruction. Australia had great depth of talent at this time. There were some world class players who couldn't get a game in the test side. Gilly was pure joy to watch when he was on song.

Adam Gilchrist is my all time favorite keeper batsman and one of my most favorite cricketers. Still puts a smile on my face whenever i watch these footages

The best. I love MS Dhoni too, but Gilly pioneered the trend of Keepers being great batsmen. Created his own role in the cricket team - the Makelele role.

This Australian team beat every team 9 out of 10 times. And the loss they usually suffered was always super close. Absolutely dominating team.

It is great to know that Glichrist completely rewrote the way wicket keepers are viewed and valued in an international team. A pure wicket keeper with a test batting average hovering around 50 was unheard of in the world cricket till the emergence of Gilchrist. And his style of fast scoring and reliable hands behind the wicket laid template and set the high standard for future stars as Dhoni, Sangakkara, Bairstow etc.

Not only a great player, but also one of the fairest. Always walked if he was out. Makes him the all round best.

It is simply unfathomable how good he was. Some of the shots he played in this inning is impossible to execute against a quality attack. And he played them throughout the inning. Simply unbelievable.
