Man this video really resonated with me! I myself started my cybersecurity journey the same way I got an industry certification reversed engineered specific roles and I got to work. Months later I was offered a Senior Info Security Analyst position with a sign on bonus. Sharing your journey truly helps others it is the lords work. In the midst of transitioning into tech I also started to study the Bible with my wife. That is when it all became clear as I got closer to God everything I did became prosperous.

Seeing each other in these spaces is so important. I had an interview for a technical role. The head of their IT department is a black woman. I was so happy and relieved to see that. Even if I don't get the role, I am so grateful. Just to see someone like me in these positions makes me feel like I belong in these spaces. It really broke down some mental barriers for me. I say that to say thank you to you too, Cyrus. Wishing you peace and continued success.

Excellent interview, I learned so much. I lost faith with being black in tech. I’ve only made $40,000 a year even being the primary lead desktop support tech for 20 yrs. Myself and other blacks were pushed to do the work while others (primarily white males) were encouraged to take promotions over us. Your interviews are giving me hope that I & others can get beyond that threshold to a respectful salary in IT 😊.

You've been doing this for 20yrs and only made 40k/yr? What made you stay in help desk support or the same company so long? I think the key is once you get that initial experience, is after a year or so, get another cert and apply for another job, up your income 20-35%, rinse and repeat. Thats what worked for me anyways.

@@bombay_8368 good question and good advise. The first 10 years was a corporate job right after getting a CIS degree. I remember everything being great at least for about 5 yrs. Then management started putting people that needed to be managed in managing positions. I should have left then, but feeling over worked and overwhelmed with life I stayed and battled the drama until being laid-off. The next 10 years was working for the government, similar things happening. Things start out great, but then eventually you see the writing on the wall. Long story short even with evidence of what was happening to some many. The union would not help, so I left the state.

Regarding the dating question: I totally understand not feeling comfortable mentioning your job at early stages for privacy/personal reasons. You can describe what you do on a high level (without giving an actual title, get creative). And if they ask how much you make don't give a specific number. And if they press for more just say you can't really go into detail for privacy reasons. Or just get really good at changing the subject lol. But if you LIE about your job and say one thing and I find out down the line it's something completely different... I'd assume you're trying to hide something for nefarious reasons like you're a con man, married, etc. And I'd just block you altogether without a second thought.

Hi Cyrus! I have a question for you (sorry if you answered it in the video, I haven't finished it yet but wanted to ask you personally :) I watched a Course Careers testimonial you uploaded a year ago, and in that you mentioned that you always recommend the Technology Sales course over the IT course but may make an exception for someone wanting to go the Cybersecurity route. Well that's exactly what I'm planning to pursue! I'm all set to be enrolled into WGU for their Bachelors in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, but want to take the Course Careers IT program first and land an entry-level position before starting my degree program. My plan is to get all of my certifications the WGU program offers in the first six months of the program and add them to my resume along with my IT experience from my entry-level job and hopefully land a 6-figure Cybersecurity position by the end of the year! My question is have you done more research into the IT program course careers offers, and would you recommend that be the one I take over the Technology Sales and Data Analytics course that they now offer as well?

Hey! I would recommend CourseCareers IT course for someone who has no experience or skill set at all in cybersecurity. But if you have a skill set and maybe certifications, then I would suggest Leveled Careers. Here's the discount code for the 2 boot camp so you can choose which suits you better. CourseCareers is self-paced. Most finish it in 1 month. They offer tech sales, UX/UI, tech recruiting, and customer success roles with an average entry salary of $65k-$95k. They are partnered with tech companies, so they can help you get interviews with companies looking to hire their graduates. They also have paid internships while you wait to get hired. They only offer courses for people in Canada and the USA. They’re just $449 WITH MY DISCOUNT LINK: coursecareers.com/cyrusharbin For those who want a career as a sales engineer or in cybersecurity, but at a more affordable price, I recommend Leveled Careers bootcamp. It's self-paced and ONLY $447 WITH MY DISCOUNT CODE: Cyrus10 Click the link here to sign up and get 10% off with my code: Leveled SE: www.leveldcareers.com/a/2147714608/AVkBGmwQ
