From the 60 Minutes Archive: Former Team USA gymnasts describe doctor's alleged sexual abuse

In 2017, the attorney who sued USA Gymnastics for failing to protect female athletes told 60 Minutes he believed every Olympic team since 1996 had members abused by Dr. Lawrence Nassar. cbsn.ws/37dW8Fd

60 Minutes, the most successful American television broadcast in history, began its 52nd season in September. Offering hard-hitting investigative reports, interviews, feature segments and profiles of people in the news, the broadcast began in 1968 is still a hit in 2020. 60 Minutes makes Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 nearly every week and was the #1 weekly television broadcast three times last season.
The program still averages more than 10 million viewers, more than double the audience of its nearest network news magazine competitor. The average audience for a 60 Minutes broadcast is 150% higher than those of the network morning news programs; the audience dwarfs the number of viewers drawn by the most popular cable news programs.
About a million more people listen to the 60 Minutes radio simulcast in several major cities and on its companion podcast. Tens of thousands each week experience 60 Minutes online. The broadcast’s segments can be watched at 60Minutes.com and on the CBS All Access app. Its webcast, 60MinutesOvertime.com, offers content originally produced for the web, including behind-the-scenes video about the production of 60 Minutes stories and timely archival segments.
60 Minutes has won every major broadcast award. Its 25 Peabody and 150 Emmy awards are the most won by any single news program. It has also won 20 duPont-Columbia University journalism awards. Other distinguished journalism honors won multiple times include the George Polk, RTDNA Edward R. Murrow, Investigative Reporters and Editors, RFK Journalism, Sigma Delta Chi and Gerald Loeb awards.
60 Minutes premiered on CBS September 24, 1968. Bill Owens is the program’s executive producer. The correspondents and contributors of 60 Minutes are Sharyn Alfonsi, Anderson Cooper, John Dickerson, Norah O’Donnell, Scott Pelley, Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and L. Jon Wertheim.

I watched both documentaries that came out about this. Nassar freaking violated some of these women WITH THIER PARENTS IN THE ROOM. He just blocked their view so effectively that they just had no idea and the girls though, there's no way they don't know. But they didn't. So even with the parent in the room - it still happened. Supervison isn't what's needed. It's believng the victims when they speak out and changing the environment in general so that they fell they CAN speak out without fear of retribution.

It's not alleged abuse 60 min. It is actual abuse. The man was found guilty of the charges of sexual abuse and is in prison. 150 testified, 150 more gave a testimony by paper. The judge believes he probably abused 1000-3000 victims if you go by the reporting of sexual abuse. Usually 2/3rds of abuse is never reported. There are still athletes and women coming out of denial and realizing they were abused.

When this was broadcast, he had not yet plead guilty to all those State counts of abuse, nor there was yet seven days’ worth of very public sentencing hearings or all the victim’s impact statements. They thought they were going to have four days’ worth of statements. But then more victims came forward, and more days were added. Nor were there guilty pleas yet in another county, nor victim impact statements and sentencing in that other county. After all of that happened, you can be sure he will never leave prison - not even as a corpse.

And that is why it makes this all the more horrific. Little girls who were with a trusted Team Doctor .. uncomfortable with the "procedure" but unaware it was sexual abuse. Many times a parent was in the room with them. I honestly believe they need to dig deeper. This monster had access to so many young girls. Like the lawyer said "he is a serial predator who has done this for many, many years" and he believed the victims could be in the hundreds as Larry Nassar was around these kids since 1996.
