From backwater to big city: Shenzhen's transformation through reform and opening up

Subscribe to our KZread channel for free here: sc.mp/subscribe-youtube
Shenzhen, the once rural village close to Hong Kong, has benefited from China’s economic reform and opening up policy. It has transformed into one of the country's largest and most modern cities in just 40 years.
Three locals from different generations - Wu Tao, Zhang Donghong and Zhong Yian - talk about growing up in the southern Chinese city.

I visited India, and coughed so bad while I was there, everyday. Also, I live in Korea, next to China. Western wind blows a lot of the dust over the Korean peninsula. Only 25 % of the days in one year have clean air over here. I am from Europe, and yes, Western Europe must have been similar in the past, but I don't think that it can be compared. India and China are huge. In Europe, it never happened to me not to be able to see the sky, while here in Korea hazy days are so common. Can't open windows, can't go out without a mask, have to buy airpurifiers..

Shenzhen is very crazy. When I came about 25 years ago,the city was just like in Reno,NV where there is small number of buildings and people but when I came back last year to collect some projects I was amazed on how fast the city growth from Reno,NV to New York City,NY.It was crazy, never seen a city developed so rapidly like Shenzhen. The growth is even faster rather than in Berlin and Hiroshima. But I think about the rising of the cost of living problem, all the city around the world have that and they need to doing it and managed it right before their cities becoming like Hong Kong.Prices there are uncontrollable, crazy!!

Deng was one of the key people, however there were other pioneers like Yuan Geng, and countless entrepreneurs as well that built the likes of Huawei, Tencent from nothing. Also Henry Kissinger, Richard Nixon's policies in the 1970's, and investors from Hong Kong, Taiwan, US, Japan all played significant roles. Shenzhen's economic miracle is more complex than it seems in the official record, and will not be easily duplicated.

When my father was a child, my grandparents and him could only afford to drink congee every night, my father used to joke about it with me, he said the congee soup was so thin, so few rice, he could totoally see his reflection from it, that time was in around 1960s or 1970s. My father is from Jiangsu, now is totally another story.

At a serious juncture back in Truman times I was over at the White House to help in the drafting of a grave presidential message to Congress. The President's counsel said the President desired to have in it some passages about the light at the end of the tunnel. I made a skeptical comment. The counsel inquired what I expected to find at the end of the tunnel. I answered, "Another tunnel, of course." I remember that interchange because the former counsel, encountered at a social occasion recently, recalled it with an observation, "How right you were!"
