From a Childhood Dream to The First Person On Mars | Alyssa Carson | TEDxKlagenfurt

Did you dream about becoming an astronaut when you were little? Alyssa Carson did. Ever since she was a little girl, she has had her heart set on the stars. Not only did she dream of it, but she has also actually achieved it! In this TEDxTalk, she shares her journey from a childhood dream of becoming an astronaut to quite a realistic chance of being one of the first people on Mars. At just 18 years old, Alyssa is the first person to attend all three NASA Space Camps in the world, as well as to complete the NASA Passport program, visiting all 14 NASA Visitor Centers stretching across 9 states. Moreover, she is the youngest to be accepted and graduate the Advanced Possum Academy, officially making her certified to go to space and an astronaut trainee in 2016. Also, she is one of seven ambassadors representing Mars One, a mission to establish a human colony on Mars in 2030. To find out more about Alyssa, follow her on Instagram / nasablueberry or visit her website nasablueberry.com/ This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Your parents are probably right in this case. At that age your far from getting official training by NASA. This is girl is not in any way working for or being trained by NASA. All she's done is gone to a few space camps(not in any way supported by NASA) and her father generated all this buzz for her and it's working. So many people are looking up to her it's sad.

    If you cannot become an astronaut in this way, you will have many different ways to become an astronaut, such as joining the air force and then apply to astronauts or become a space engineer, then apply to astronauts, etc. If you don't have enough money, become an astronaut in your own way, don't give up your dream too easily. In life, if you have a dream, find ways to do it. Make sure that by the time you are about to die, you may find that you have no regrets about the day you lived.

    You can just tell that you wanna do something badly enough. Anything can trigger it. People do projects they think are cool all the time. But it’s rare that you find that one thing that hooks your mind and won’t let go no matter what. That cartoon sparked it for her. It is what it is. I can relate because I watched this one episode of Kim Possible (a cartoon) when I was 10, and it hooked me on the idea of personal vehicles to space. And I didn’t know electrical engineering, or accounting, profit or loss, opportunity cost, business model validation, physics, nothing. I just knew that I wanted to do aerospace engineering. If ever you’re fortunate enough to have your brain sparked so you can say, “this is exactly what I wanna do for the rest of my life” without any justification, you’ll know what her 3 year old mind experienced. I think her parents are NASA engineers or something, so they pushed her to act on this 3 year old vision she had, but that would be all for nothing if she didn’t believe it in her own capacity. I wish you the best, my friend. May you find that thing (or things) you’d do forever 🙏🏽

    Float Circuit The point that I was trying to make is that it is very unlikely that this could happen to a 3 year old person. At that age kids are not really able to comprehend those things... they start feeding themselves, dressing themselves... all the basic things, you know, but not deciding what they want to be :) Most people don’t even remember themselves at that age. I do have a passion and I am extremely happy I found it.

    I found this video to basically explain to me about how you can achieve your dreams at a young age. To me it’s not about the age, if it takes you from leaving school to becoming an astronaut 20years to accomplish that’s better than starting from a young age. It’s not about pushing yourself to choose and get your dream career before your 23, it’s about spending or dedicating your side to that dream, the best people are the ones who make up there mind and work hard to achieve that dream. She basically makes me feel like I should get some crazily qualified job before I’m legally able to drink.

    If your parents has money and connection everything can happen, However people like us who can’t even afford a house to rent can’t as they have no time and financial circumstances to do all these stuff as it cost a lot . People like us has to work some where in like KFC to pay our parents for home rent. All these training that she is doing such as sky diving it’d cost a lot. When she was 3 she has been enriched with money and didn’t need to work or worry and no stress so she could really achieve her dreams. People like me also have these dreams how ever not even have time to dream as there are bills to pay. I already gave up to on the dream not because I wanted, but I had to.

    Again for the people in the back! She may have achieved a lot for her age, but she doesn't seem to have a clue about how much money her dream costs. Most of us have to work part time while struggling to pay for college, only for that degree to become useless because there's not enough job demands for what we've learned, and told we don't have enough experience for the few jobs we could get. She has had all of this handed to her. Admirable goal, but she hasn't earned her place when sitting next to those that have had to work their way to the top and obtain possible debt to obtain degree after degree. Struggles she has never even had to think about. My only shot at this point in my life is the path I'm taking now. With absolutely no guarantee of getting anywhere in space and a long shot alone to even get qualified to study it. Hello United States Air Force who is going to give me a job and tuition assistance to TRY to get as many relavent degrees as possible. If I had any advice for this young woman, it would be to go and get the credits, degrees, and work experience of a regular poor person. So she can at least have an idea of how implausible it is for us to walk in her shoes and so she may be even more thankful for the opportunity she has.

    I am 12, and this has been my dream. I don't know how to achieve it though. I thought you needed a Masters Degree, and then work for the air force, and then apply to become an astronaut. Yet she is 18 years old and certified to fly in space. She never worked in the air force, and I'm not even sure if she has an Masters degree. How did she do this, and is it possible for other people?

  • @himanshishende2149

    @himanshishende2149

    Its true that she doesn't have any master's degree and she never worked in air force, but she has the knowledge and training ,which might be the reason that she was certified to fly in space. But again this may not be the only reason, from what I've read on other comments, it appears that her parents were also astronauts, so basically she had proper guidance, connections and above all "money". My advise : Don't focus on her age or your age, just work hard and never give up, coz if you keep going you will eventually reach your goal no matter how old you are.

    @SpaceBot I wouldn't go so far as to say she's a fraud. I admire her enthusiasm, and that will get her far. But I do agree that she's overstating what she's done thus far, and saying you're going to be something alone doesn't make it happen. The media is of course latching on because it's a great story from a media point of view, just not very realistic. She did recently get her pilot's license though. I say, let her continue working at her dream and come back in a few years.

    I also think it's unfortunate she's throwing her weight behind NASA when they've continually overpromised and underdelivered on deep space human exploration for decades. We're still 20 years from a manned mars flight, at least (and still were 20 years ago). SpaceX could use someone with her enthusiasm.

However it stopped when i started my studies back after a long quarantine, it faded on my mind that time. After that i have read a tragic story that was 7 years ago,it was a story of a married austronauts, they married on mars and created a child, that story was inspiring since the husband sacrificed his life because of the upcoming asteroid on their way. After reading that story, it didn't got off my mind but instead it pushes me to grow interest back on it. And a reminder I'm only 13 years old, it feels unimpossible to dream such a scary dream but when you're really into it, you will always think about the positive side of it. Dreams are meant to be hard that's why we're grinding on it. We couldn't achieve it without dedication and patience. I hope all of us will have a blessed future ahead!🤎

They didn't support me. But they killed my dream . They didnt let me take science for study. They give me comarce for study . And said you cant read science ,thats to hard. But science was my favourite subject from my child hood and still and its gonna be my favourite subject forever. I always wanted to be an astronaut. Thats my dream still with knowing that its not possible anymore. My parents snatched my happiness, dream and the life i wanted to live. When i saw this vdo i was burst tears .😢

    You're only 14, you've got plenty of time to achieve your dreams. It's still early enough to switch subject at school. If not, you can always take evening or community science classes after graduating or study science now by yourself at home in your free time, and then apply for a science programme at uni. Don't give up already, your life has just started! Also: very often dreams change as you grow up. Your future job might not even exist yet! You'll be fine :)

    I'm currently 12 loll somehow ended up here , all my recommendation feed and books and doodles and almost every single thought in my brain is about space travel , the future and how we can save it ....every country is trying to colonize mars to make their company's and country's name famous but I bet no one will succeed like that because if we go on mars well not go there on the behalf of any particular country we'll go there on the behalf of humanity . It is my dream to help in colonizing mars and at least do something that proves that I'm not a waste of oxygen . I'm gonna edit this comment in 15-20 years and tell y'all if I made it
