​@linkesh8129 he was scared he might screw up and let down Monica. Besides, it was a case of wedding jitters. He came back BTW. No one got hurt and he fully got over his fear of commitment. This was followed by Chandler being a great husband and promising father

@@samstern2042 well, if Ross and Phoebe hadn't found and convinced him to come back just in time, Monica must have been desperate and crying when the wedding that she's always dreamt of with a man she loved just vanished because he's freaked out and took of. There's no excuse for his action, if he had problem, he could tell the other friends apart from Monica, who would always listen and be there for him. I really liked Chandler from the beginning, but after that incident, that good impression just dropped

​@@duonghoangsang2869yeah what he did was not good. but he was so afraid of him and monica ending up like his parents. he started freaking out when he heard the fact they'll be the bings bc his parents had a horrible marriage and he was afraid of that happening to him and monica. it's not that he didn't want to marry her or that he wanted to leave her he just had was scared of ruining his relationship with her

Came here after hearing the news. This is one of my favorite Chandler scenes, so heartwarming, so sweet, makes me emotional everytime. Such a great actor, such a big heart, gone too soon. Rest in peace, Matthew, thank you for the laughs and the tears❤️‍🩹

THIS HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE EVER. The way chandler smile and that “i know”. I’m freakin soft for this scene.

Not only was the delivery of “I know” so heartwarming, but it’s also Monica’s catchphrase throughout the series, and that makes it 10 times sweeter. Not to mention when she said “I know, I know” just moments before.

Ross mocking Paul’s little dance and using what he heard against Paul is his greatest moment on the show, hands down.

Watching this after his death, fly high Chandler we will never forget you. Could I BE anymore heartbroken???

I remember watching this episode for the first time, REALLY thinking they were setting up a Mondler breakup because of Chandler's commitment phobia. Never imagined this direction for the story to take and it being JUST 100% right! They were perfect for each other.

I had to come here after hearing the news. One of my favorite Friends scenes ever. Rest in peace, Matthew ❤

Their relationship was so lovely because Monica never pushed Chandler, who she knew had commitment issues. Monica wanted to get married and have kids, but she always respected Chandler's boundaries and never pushed him into anything.

Definitely one of Chandler's greatest moments.

It's terrifying just to imagine oneday one of the co stars of Friends will die then another then another. Friends to me is a big reason for happiness in my short little life. If heaven gives me an offer I will watch Friends again from season One and I hope I have a bad memory so I will again feel what I felt in this world.

Well that's how life is the friends are now in their 50s now they all have their own kids and they will start getting older which is normal but many of them still look young and gorgeous that's good

Yeah it’s beautiful (audience reaction) I swear chandlers biggest fear of commitment made this scene the biggest throw off in any friends episode cause I don’t think anyone saw a proposal coming

Chandler came in without saying “Hey”.

Was just rewatching this episode, and now, with foreknowledge of this twist, I noticed something else: at the museum, both Phoebe and Rachel, as well as Joey and Chandler himself at "Central Perk" were actively suggesting for Monica to visit the museum, and the girls really tried hard to convince Monica to put her a Chandler's names on the list there. I love to think that Rachel and Joey were also both in on it from the start. If so, it just warms my heart to see such a beautiful friendship between all of them. And of course, Chandler, the guy who's so extremely scared of commitment that even Monica understands that (and that's Monica, she's been planning her marriage since at least her teens), taking initiative to propose to Monica in the most romantic way, is just as beautiful)

They should atleast have 5 more seasons where the gang tell their own and each other's kids all the fuck ups of their lifetime . For eg 1. Ross kissing Chandler's mom 2 . Chandler kissing Joey's sister 3 . Joey throwing gingers leg in the fire 4. Phoebe accidently dropping the lottery bowl on the street . And the most epic . 5 . Chandler almost losing Mon on his proposal day because of his sense of humour . I bet it will be hillarious .

This was more than enough deception to set up Monica being completely blindsided by Chandler’s proposal. All the extra nonsense in the season finale was not necessary. At least Richard’s reappearance somewhat made up for it.

Question: do guys in real life actually fall for girls like Chandler did? Do they want to get married and want to have kids? (I am fully aware than not all do, so that doesn't need to be addressed. But I've never met who does.)

I got married to my wife a few months ago; I was the one who pushed for at least a small wedding and not a courthouse ceremony (for religious as well as familial reasons) and my wife and I both want to start trying for kids in a year or two. I have several guy friends who want the same things.

Heck yeah! I just need to find my monica. I want that house in the outskirts of town. I want two kids and a dog and a lot of land to let my kids do whatever on. I want to wake up next to my special someone every morning and give her a kiss before work. It just all depends for you to be honest. I just cant seem to find someone who lives up to my standards. Many females these days just want to marry for money. I just want a pure relationship with someone who loves me for me and not for my money.

If my fiancé *left* after I offered to cook dinner, then claimed he was FREAKING OUT to "surprise" me, I would be livid! If my ex showed up again like Richard did, I would also probably start to think my fiancé was too immature for a relationship. I know it's just a show, but this is when the show started to derail a bit, imo. Thankfully, the comedy was saved by the Ross/Rachel "who slept with whoM" episode!🤣😂

You've answered it the best, its just a show. Richard's arrival is just ludicrious and there is no reason for Monica to accept him in anyway. Also the twists and turns wouldn't work without all these freakout moments. The show didn't derail, it kept us on the edge.

Bruce Willis lost a bet with Matthew Perry saying if the movie they made a whole 9 yards was a box office success that Willis has to appear a few episodes of friends for free the movie grossed over 100 million dollars so there it is

Can anyone explain the “neat guy” bit or maybe what he’s referencing if he is? I know it’s probably just an over the top Ross joke but it seems too odd to be an original joke.

This was the Phoebe who was Chandlers friend, dunno why the writers made it seem like she was not on board with their relationship n wanted Monica to do better than him. Phoebe was the 1st friend Chandler told he was going to propose to Monica bc I think Chandler trusted Phoebe the most in keeping it from Monica, had he told Rachel or Ross they would've ended up blurting it out, Joey prolly could've kept it a secret but he always ends up caving under pressure of keeping a secret, dunno why they ruined Phoebe like they did since many Friends fan saw Phoebe as the true homegirl to the guys

1) Chandler is not representative of all western men. Some men want to get married and love committed relationships. So don’t extrapolate too much from this scene. That being said… 2) The reason marriage is a big deal, and something to be ready for moreso than living together or just sleeping together, is because marriage is a union recognized by the government. Once you do that, it actually becomes expensive and difficult to “break up”. So being very sure you’re ready, and being honest about the fact that you aren’t, is the right thing to do.

As a person raised in a religious life I totally agree with you. But in a secular society with modern values, marriage is mostly for legal reasons. Both men and women are often hesitant to truly commit.

What if the writers let Ross stay with Elizabeth or at least give them a better breakup than the one where Elizabeth is portrayed as immature girl.

What's the point of proposing to someone when you had been sleeping with them for so long?
