In real life Odell Beckham's dad was the running back at Marshall. The Permian D pretty much spent the entire week planning to key in on him every single play. There's almost an entire chapter in the book where it talks about if they could stop Odell they'd win.

Exactly! And yes, for anyone else reading this, that's actually very important for context in why Miles was *actually* so special! Let's be clear, Miles wasn't some "football superhero" who could "do everything, including play QB and kicker." No, he was simply a *full back* (yes, he was a full back, not a half back) who, in addition to being very big, a great blocker, and a great power runner who could pick up a first down or touchdown in a short yardage situation, was *also* very *very* fast, *and* had the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield and, with his speed, pick up *huge* chunks of yardage (and yes, those skills would eventually become common amongst full backs, but back in 1988, that was virtually *unheard of* from someone in Miles' position)! To put it simply, *that* was the major advantage Miles provided for his team, because while his team could simply key in on the opposing team's halfback on rushes, other teams *could not do the same* to the Panthers, as the Panthers had *two* dangerous rushers in their backfield! In addition, with Miles' ability to turn from blocker-to-receiver, if a passing play was broken, the QB could almost *always* dump it off to him, because opposing teams *were not used* to having to watch the *full back* as a passing threat! Again, a huge advantage that *Odessa Permian* had and basically *no other team* did! So yes, thank you for bringing that up! Not only because it it's interesting to hear about Odell Beckham Jr's dad, but also simply because it gives the perfect context to explain the *true* story behind Miles' and why he was so great!

It’s kind of crazy how different the spirit of the book is from the movie. The movie makes it seem like a boilerplate football story, it’s kind of funny

Thanks for adding this. I love reading about the real life differences of this story as opposed to the film. I've even heard some complain about how the movie shouldn't have told the story so different...but considering when it was made, football had changed. Fullbacks had almost disappeared from the game when this was filmed. The game shifted from run based to pass happy with one featured yet very versatile running back. I'm sure they did this to draw a younger audience!! A movie showing double TE, power eye offensive formations would've gone right over a young viewers head!!

Yeah, none of this actually happened in real life! It'd take me too long to explain it all, so I'll try to sum it up. -Miles was actually a FB, not an HB, and that's a key difference in how the story is told. -Miles was indeed revolutionary as a FB at that time, as almost no other FB that size had his speed and the ability to catch out of the backfield (making the Permian offense *very* difficult to stop for defenses who were used to keying in on the HB on runs and never guarding the FB on passes), but he wasn't some sort of "football superhero" who could play every position, and he definitely wasn't "killing teams for 5 TDs" as this movie makes him out to be, and rather the kind of player who "when he's on the field, *everyone's* stats go *way* up!" -Miles didn't get injured late in the first game of the season with the game already decided. No, he got injured in a pre-season scrimmage, very early in the game, and on a routine block (as he was a full back). So yes, basically, the movie takes *a lot* of liberties with the truth, to the point where it's almost dishonest for the movie itself to claim it's "based on a true story." This movie is pretty much a glorified fan fiction of the actual story (and to be honest, I like the true story better. It shows how the team was built and all fit together, how losing one key piece was critical, and how the team overcame that adversity and made up for what they lost after losing that key piece. The movie does not do that at all. Basically, the movie says, "entire team is one guy, one guy gets injured, team is now a bottom feeder, then team starts playing well again for- eh, no need to really explain why; they just do. Ok, you're inspired. We're done here")!
