    So we had 2100's for years...then Husqvarna bought out the 298XP (econo 2100) in the late 80's for a few years while the 2100 was still around...the 298 had more plastic no manual oiler they were just cheaper made a bit lighter kinda a flop in the woods....no technological advances ...then Husqvarna replaced both models with the 2101XP....in the early 90's I think by year 2000 the 394XP cameout....the revolutionary new saw of Husky ......to replace the older style 1100 thru 2101....first produce in 1975. Yes lots of time running them in big timber....fell a 9 1/2 Douglas Fir with a 2100 with a 50 inch cannon bar....up Jackson Creek Umpqua NF....back in the day biggest tree I ever cut....in my strip on Jackson Creek used to cut 3 to 4 trees a day for 25M or more....big wood ...haven't cut that size timber in years....Those saws were like having a Harley in your hands....loved the sound of them....we use to port and polish and install a velocity stack with a K&N or Green Weenie...the old Husky alway had a terrible air filter system saws couldn't breathe....thanks Tinman....Shoe

    When I was cutting had a friend who bought a 298...its a 2100 without a manual oiler (yep like you mentioned) we used to call them a Econo 2100...they were cheaper at the saw shop.......I used 2100...still have 2 2100's and a 2101...thin ring...also two Stihl 056 Mag II.....falling here in the Pacific Northwest...Shoe in SW Oregon. Enjoy your videos. Ps.....love that Brigg & Stratton pull Handle.

    Love it! I grew up around drag racing and nascar. Some guys loved the build and cared nothing about driving the cars. Others wanted the thrill of speed and knew very little about engine building. A few liked both-the build and the speed. I think the same is true in the world of power saws. Everyone is welcome! Engine builders, collectors, fallers, firewood mongers, etc!!!

    Awesome saw! Still running an ‘86 non chainbrake 298xp for felling up here in AK. Got it from a guy that logged on the olympic peninsula in WA back in the 80s, It was his backup saw. That guy was 300bills, im 150. So I usually stretch out the shoulders, then use a 1x4 or limb under the handle, and put both feet on it, after gettting the ATV handle set just so pretension wise. Then just try not to rip my arm off at the shoulder haha. I used to let others try starting it until a guy cracked the full wrap handle and i had to get that welded back up. Thought about installing a decomp button MANY times! They sound like a top fuel drag car at idle, in my mind at least. Thanks for posting the video! Cant wait to see more.

LOVE IT, I will tell you guys a tip on finding saws, next time you see a yard sale try saying " do you have any old worn out chain saws you want to get rid off?) I have scored a load of saws that way. If they have one, they say " oh I have one in my shed but its dirty and won't start ) or something like that and i go home with it. Keep up the vids brother! Still have a stock 77cc model 480CD I bought back in 1978. Even though takes super pickin' to find parts for it in recent years, it flat refuses to permanently die into a parts saw. It's a 10 year older Husky than that one, but there's a lot of very similar parts; for example, identical top-cover except the newer saw has an improved 1-screw hatch for air filter access. At 100ccs that's gotta pull.

  • @bobw7018

    @bobw7018

    2 жыл бұрын

    the 480 shares the top cover with a 180, 280, and 380, all of which have a one piece cylinder and air filter cover, unlike the 298, and 2100/2101 series. What differs in the 280 for example is ignition, an S model had points, and the CD had electronic. I'm fairly familiar with this platform, having been given a 280S in non running condition. Fun story in that one.

I wish I could have bought several saws that day, little did I know how great the saws from that era were. Buy a MS461, 372xp, 390xp, 395xp while you can get them new. Skip tooth 404 chain, and lay it on the wood, and the weight of the saw helped it fall effortlessly thru the wood. too heavy for limbing, or even falling….but man chewing thru big wood, the chips wood fly! took out the brass governor screw and blocked the hole with a piece of gasket material, and it revved right out. you got a winner there, Tinman! A sow of a thing to cut and would rip the arms off you with the recoil. I recently came across an old con-saw for sale and it was an identical machine to the 65L from the same era with the bar oil tank and everything. Couldn't buy it at the time but would have loved to have had the pair.

    I worked at a local saw shop in Wa state, Pacific NW (Olympic forest logging), for a few years in late 1970's early 80's. Seeing your video and hearing that saw brought back memories. Husky 2100 was the loggers choice for a big saw back then. They mostly all had full wrap handles though. There was a smaller frame Husky, 268? that was also very popular. The Stihl's were popular as well sold at a competing local shop. Those Husky's had a rubber mount weakness. Replaced hundreds of them on those saws. We were a Husqvarna, Johsered (red), Poulan (green), dealer and service for the pro saws. Homelite for homeowner saws. Although there were a few Homelite pro saws back then, I only saw a few come through the shop. Hard to start big Husky's you say, and I see why, try this method. I was all of 130-140 lbs 15-16yo high school kid, no problem ever starting the 2100's. I held the saw out front of me and kinda throw the saw downward same time as jerking on the starter. This method kind of balanced the forces out, push saw down, quick jerk up on the starter rope.

    Nice saw. I enjoyed the history lesson, and it was more fun because you are so excited about your luck in finding it. I wasn't aware Husqvarna made that particular replacement for the 2100. I am familiar with the 2101. I have a three running 2100s and a bunch of bottom ends without the plastic. I just love the 2100s, and used two of them on an Alaska mill for years. I have other big old saws, but the 2100s are my favourites. I don't flip saws either, they arrive here to stay. I was lucky enough to find a low time 041AV, and I am excited because this is my first smaller Stihl.

    394-395 and 2100 variants are hands down the best sounding saws ever made. I absolutely love them. I will fire them up in the garage sometimes just to hear that sweet sound.

    394 idle like a small 1 cylinder diesel fishing boat 1600 feet away in the fog. Loved running that saw

    watch out what oil cap you use, it has to be a ventilated one otherwise your saw will not oil for long because it pulls a vacuum. If you can find more vented oil caps for this saw, I would need one.
