Blood is never good, not even if you doing that hardcore metal screaming stuff. Regardless of your vocal style, your throat should never hurt and you should definitely not be spitting out blood.

Fun fact: proper metal screaming won't hurt your voice but raspy singing very easily can like she said. I've been screaming for 3 years, almost every day, with no issues. But if I sing even for like 5 minutes in a raspy voice without very strong diaphragm support my voice gets very strained. I've screamed for 2 hours with proper technique at concerts with no pain to give perspective.

Ilaz Sadiku Have you learned to scream properly?

  • @fidrewe99

Well, as I haven't found any good explanations on the internet myself, I can only speak from my own experience. What you need to be able to do is controling the closure of the vocal folds and the closure of the region above the vocal folds (cuneiform cartilage and corniculate cartilage obviously) independently, while adding the right amount of breath pressure. If the vocal folds are compressed too much and you're adding too much pressure, you can hurt them. You should never do what makes your throat feel sore. Practising what is called a growl or low scream is a good way to start, because you learn to compress the cartilages, while relaxing the vocal folds, so that they don't produce any tone. And it's a good training for breath support. It feels very different from vocal fry or shouting. In the next step you can get into rasp starting from a low scream by letting the vocal folds approach just a bit, so that they produce a tone. Maybe also relax the cartilages a little bit. Approaching the vocal folds is what you do when you move from no sound to a breathy voice to a full voice to a mix of voice and vocal fry (= the soft distortion Freya uses, also used by basses to sing lower) to vocal fry. Practising this will help you getting control over the closure of the vocal folds when singing with grid. Once you know how it's done, a good exercise is to move forth and back between a clean and a raspy sound starting at different closures of the vocal folds. Try to get as close as possible to the point, where the flip happens, so that only a slight adjustment of the cartilages is needed to do it. In order to maintain rasp you need a higher breath pressure. So when you are singing with rasp, you could just reduce the breath pressure while maintaining the exact same throat position and you will slip back into the clean tone, so that you can check how close your vocal folds are. Depending on the position of the vocal folds and the cartilages, different resonances - different types of distortion will occur.

Use the nasal voice "meeeeehhh, I don't wannaaaa!" to produce heat. Incorperate that into the song. It doesn't hurt, and the effect is the same. It's what Brian uses to hit those notes, not vocal fry. This is evident in the way he uses an "h" sound before most lines to prevent the voice from being damaged.

Look you are not using "rasp" here, you are using "fry" to simulate rasp. Rasp by definition is bad for your voice and cannot be obtained in a healthy way. You wanna sound raspy you have to push a lot of air through your vocal chords, no way around it (think: Kurt Cobain, Axl Rose, Rod Stewart etc.). You can use the fry effect to obtain a similar sound, but the only problem is that it doesn't have the same "power" that exhaling all that air through your vocal chords has. It literally sounds similar, but with less power and intensity. If you want to sing a Nirvana song and for it to sound right, you have to wear out your voice a little. Otherwise, using fry to simulate the sound will leave the song sounding "without balls".

I don't see how Janis had damaged vocal chords? she had a fantasic range and was able to do soft vocals (summer time) which if her vocal folds were damaged she wouldn't be able to do/control. I think Janis was naturally husky, if you listen to her early recordings of country/bluegrass stuff she had already set in place a technique to give her a rasp, very high faulsetto with a fry added, sounds very compressed but all the same very impressive.

So, thank you! I suppose I could have learned this long, long ago the way I did today, but I just didn't. I was just talking to a fellow singer today about singing raspy or with the scream-like voice. I figured my vocal coaches in college just trained that out of my voice. When I was a kid I could do it. However, I was doing it wrong then too. I just didn't care. I simply had no idea how singers did that despite knowing there's some mysterious way they do without hurting themselves. It's going to be fun working these techniques into my singing. I look forward to hopefully making it sound good.
