We sit down with Edge Tech Labs' CEO, Shaun Masavage, to discuss the Fret Zealot, an LED-powered guitar learning modular system. Coupled with LED strips, this technology is powered through a smartphone app, which can listen in to how fast you're playing, so you can strum at your own pace.

Hard a.f. to find info about what effect the adhesive has on a guitar neck...if any. Can it be removed with no signs of ever being there ?? Trynna decide which guitar to put it on.

V- Men It's a bad idea, people will abuse it. It's fine if you're gonna use it to just get your fingers used to fretting and moving around but you shouldn't use it for more than a couple months MAX maybe even a month max. You need to learn using your ears, atleast with tabs you still have to work out the rythm and sometimes work out parts by eat since they may be wrong. This turns guitar into a game, it doesn't help you become a musician at all.

Jedi Jr. Jesus wrong. Master guitar players memorize patterns in addition to using their ears, and this seems like it would help memorize the patterns faster. When you are playing a 12-15 note per second passage, it’s impossible to think about every individual note, therefore, you need to be familiar with scales and patterns. This device does not turn the guitar into a game. It simply facilitated the learning process

  • @AttestedFire66

Stefan Thompson True, I didn't think about that aspect, however while I agree it'll help with the scales and patterns I still think it'd be best to simply learn some stuff without the assistance of glowing frets, it's almost like rocksmith. I think rocksmith is a valid way to learn but I just don't personally think it's the best way.

@@FretZealot will it somehow alert u to the root notes? i know u already r using the different colors for each individual finger. maybe flashing the root notes? also, will it show u the correct fingering for each lick when ur trying to learn a song? will this plug into a computer?

Been playing for a good 6 months now. This would've really helped in the beginning. Now I can come up with some mediocre riffs and learn songs faster, used to be I had to really play a song to learn it but now I just check the tabs and play it once or twice and I have it. The struggle now is I feel like I don't know what to do next to improve, it's like I know everything (atleast the basics of all the major things) and now I'm in a rut, which I know everyone falls into this rut at some point. Another thing I'm struggling with is even though I can play basically anything I want it seems like everything is a little sloppy. Like everything isn't always perfect. No matter how much technique I work on or how many times I practice a certain piece I never get all the little kinks and shit out, it's frustrating because I see my guitarist friends all playing and everything sounds so smooth and perfect and meanwhile I don't even know exactly what sounds off, it's just small little shit and the way I use my fingers that make some riffs kinda choppy I guess. Eitherway nobody should ever pay 200 dollars for this, definitely without a single doubt not worth it in any way form or fashion. I'd pay like 40$ max personally and I know because of the technology that's kind of low but even at 80$ it's iffy. The product doesn't even have a good song selection and it'll only be useful for the first month or two of learning, on top of that it's best to struggle a little and try to do some stuff without tabs or work out parts if the tabs seem wrong because it helps build your musical ear and creativity.

Lol You know everything? Are you speaking of rhythm? This sloppy sound you speak of can probably be fixed with more experience plain and simple. I would start with bends...lots and lots of bends and vibrato. If only it were as simple as knowing where to put your fingers. Just changing from a G to D can be done many many ways. Most of these things can't be explained. You will just start doing tiny things that you might never be aware of and it comes with time. Get some back tracks and just play lead. This will get the fingers stronger and you will find more and more stuff as you play. I guess the short of it is to play play play. You will get better and the sound smoother.

I’ve only been playing for about 3-4 years now but I believe it’s best to memorize the fretboard by doing exercises like finding all the A’s on the fretboard and then work through all the notes, while working on relative pitch (your musical ear) at the same time. Then once you have truly internalized the fretboard you actually have the tools to use the music theory that you learn. In theory. Also for things seeming choppy, don’t be afraid to slow things down to get it right before trying to speed up, and breaking things down into small enough pieces is also great for practicing. (Do it along with the slowed down song or a metronome to practice timing) Good luck!

Maybe some day! There are a lot of hidden challenges with that at this time. We make Fret Zealot 14 frets + open to maximize compatibility with the most number of guitars. For example, most acoustic guitars mount just after the 14th fret, so going past that point requires a very difficult transition that would be extremely fragile and still not work on a lot of guitars :-/
