Frequently AUG'd Questions: A Guide To The Modern Steyr Bullpup

Wanting an excuse to take my Steyr AUG A3 to the range again, it seemed like a fun idea to talk about frequently asked questions we hear regarding this bullpup.
FAQs include: Will the AUG cycle steel case ammo? What's the difference between A3 & A3-M1? How bad is the trigger pull really? Should I go with original Austrian pattern mags or get the 'NATO' version that takes AR15 mags? And a few more besides.
I conclude the video by explaining why when i already owned a preban AUG A1 that i decided to also pickup a modern AUG A3 back in 2013 too.

    Regarding the trigger, it's not good by any means, but it's a whole lot better than the internet horror stories would have you believe. I'd compare it to a rather heavy Mil-Spec AR trigger, like a BCM LPK trigger. The weight is heavy, but it's not super gritty or anything.

    I could not agree more on using the mags a gun is designed for. The Nato AUGs look ok but I'd still get a normal style if I bought one. I have regularly bitched about the ugliness of AK's that have STANAG adapters. One of the neat things about AK's is the rock 'n lock mags. I posted a request on the Patreon page a couple of weeks ago about your favorite 5.56 AK's and/or covering military/police used 5.56 AKM / 74 style rifles excluding the not quite AK's such as Valmets and Galils. But it's only been 2 weeks, I have faith you will get to it in due time.

    not gonna lie, I was on the fence about trading my x95 for an aug this weekend. And your comment about these being released in small batches really sold me. I can find x95s around me and if I want I can buy another. But I've never seen a new aug for sale around me. LGS even took down the AUG listings on their websites. Made me realize online or used was my only option and I'm not paying overpriced gun broker prices.

    I also got mine in 2013; although, I paid $2300 for it because of the panic at the time. Mine had a bad bolt and bad picatinny rail, so it had to go back to the factory: it had failures to eject that caused the bolt to go forward with the empty brass stuck in the extractor, also causing the brass throat to chip the stock. The gunsmith only measured the rail instead of trying to put an accessory on it, so I had to pay separate shipping to send the rail back for a new one when I verified it was indeed still out of spec. Ammo was very hard to come by at the time, so testing it for reliability was a pain. So mine had a bumpy start. BUT after the factory gave me a new bolt, stock, and rail, I have not had any issues with it. When the 9mm conversion kits came in, I was being stingy and didn't buy one, thinking they'd always be there, which I kick myself for now. I still need to find a good optic for it. I currently have a surplus Elcan M145 on it, which looks cool, but is heavy as hell and does not illuminate as it should.

    You talking about H&K hating us American gun owners made me think of the FAMAS. Man I would sell a testicle to get to own an A1 FAMAS, just so cool. We always want what we can't have. Hopefully with the French supposedly switching to the H&K 416, maybe just maybe we can get some FAMAS parts kits over here. That would be so awesome.

    I'd prefer to get the G2 FAMAS somehow to be honest. The F1 model of the FAMAS is very dated with 25 round proprietary mags, 1/12 rifling, rumors of it preferring steel as opposed to brass cased etc. It would've been nice if the rifle was still around and being made and seeing how much more it would've evolved as well, but sadly the manufacturer went out of business 20 years ago.

    The best reason to get the RDB over other commercially available bullpups (other than the price, which frankly is fantastic if you can find one for sale, and the rifle's neat downward case ejection system) is the trigger. I don't know about all that modular stuff. I'm sure it's practical for people who need/want it, but only the classic A1 looks like "a true AUG" to me. What can I say, esthetics play a big part in whether I like a gun or not. Tried an A3 a few weeks ago, and when you're used to the orginal charging handle, that folding "more ergonomic"... thing just feels weird and flimsy. But that's just my opinion.

  • @misha5670

    @misha5670

    4 жыл бұрын

    The AUG was designed from the beginning to be modular. To the Austrians, the scope being part of the receiver casting wasn't an issue since they could easily replace or swap it out for a new/different one later. It is an issue for us though since in the USA that is the serialized part, the 'firearm' part of the gun. So we're stuck with that one part pretty much forever. This is when i think being able to replace or remove the optic becomes a nice option to have. Personally? I like the AUG A2 the most, but originals of those are rather rare in the US today.

  • @ShootAUT

    @ShootAUT

    @@misha5670 While still not cheap, parts are everywhere here in Austria. Yet the A1 is also something like a collectible and can be hard to find. I've seen prices up to around 5k (new ones are around 3k). Then again, nobody really wants an A1, 'cause it's the standard military issue that _everybody_ had during army training. Guess a bit too standard for most people, and therefore boring. XD

I have plenty of AR mags so thats money saved (original mags are around $30-40 currently. Yikes!) Ive never woke up a day in my life and been left handed so that feature is a non issue. The A3M1 is in my top five favorite rifles for sure. Mine doesn't like steel cased ammo but I've never tried it on the adverse gas setting. I shoot brass cased 90% of the time any way so I could care less. I have the 18" barrel on mine, it was a special run for PJ's steyr-aug around 2013. I really like that length, it's long enough to look more like the A1 with the 20" barrel but not too long. Feels like the goldilocks barrel length for a AUG but that's just my opinion. I also got it with the 3x scope, in hindsight I probably should have gone with the 1.5x as I don't like the 3x all that much. I intend to put a small red dot on top like a RMR but just haven't gotten around to it. Overall a fantastic rifle, a modern classic really. Only thing is I wish I had bought the 24" barrel and bipod kit when they were around so I could have the pseudo LMG configuration too. Just couldn't bring myself to drop over $1000 on a second barrel setup, they are long gone now.
