Frenchman Coulee - A Journey Of Beautiful Sights And Breathtaking History in the Western Scablands

If you enjoyed this video, please consider buying me a coffee :) www.buymeacoffee.com/adventur...
Frenchman Coulee is part of the Western Scablands in the Pacific Northwest near Vantage in Washington, which surprised me with its rugged beauty and truly captivating geological history. I will never forget the first time I stood near the massive hexagonal basalt columns, near-perfect shapes meant to be climbed. But this place is not just for climbers. There are many exciting hiking paths along the top of the ancient lava field, tall cliffs, and the coulee floor.
Join me as I visit the Frenchman Coulee Waterfall and other sights. Follow me on a short historical journey to discover how these coulees were formed by an unimaginable flood after the last ice age. First spring flowers also poked out on top of the plains, and a hawk soared in the strong winds high above the coulee.

@@adventuresandreams I made it to the Frenchman Coulee. I'm handicapped so I couldn't go into the coulee proper, as cars aren't allowed. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip though. I also travelled to the Ginko Petrified Forest and to the wild horse display called Grandfather Cut Loose the Ponies. A 380 mile round trip, and I'm looking forward to going back.

@@joesanders6898 I'm so glad you were able to go there, Joe, even if you couldn't quite get to all the places. The whole landscape is so breathtaking, though, when driving and when hiking. I never heard of the Ginko Petrified Forest and Grandfather Cut Loose the Ponies. Looking both of them up, they seem pretty amazing as well. How was the temperature? It must be pretty hot there right now. I think I will return in the Fall when it's a bit cooler. Hopefully, we won't have any fires and smoke later on in the season. Take care and many more adventures to you!

That location looks amazing. We'll have to explore it in the fall when we head up to Leavenworth for the turning leaves.

Thank you so much, Jason. I didn't know that you were also watching some of my videos. That means a lot to me! :) This place is so great, and you two would have so many opportunities for epic photos, especially at sunset when these canyons explode in the light. :)

I grew up in the area. My dad took my brother and I down the road where it meets the river when they were filling the reservoir, as the water came up, you could see all the insects and animals moving ahead of the water, and the now vantage Bridge looked funny way up on the air . They had to move the town of vantage up the hill.

Thank you for watching and for your comment, Doug. That must have been something to see the reservoir this way with the bridge way up there. And to move the town! My family had to move for the same reason over 50 years ago when a reservoir was built right near their little farm. Their property is still visible now (not the buildings, but where it used to be). I'm nearly certain that would have never ended up in the US creating videos if they didn't move all these years ago. :)

@@adventuresandreams near to Frenchman Coulee, is Potholes coulee. It’s two coulees that are as big as Frenchman coulee, with a waterfall and small lakes inside. But don’t confuse potholes coulee with the Potholes Reservoir by Moses Lake. Potholes coulee is near Quincy. I think the access is restricted now to only the north entry road-to limit vandalism. Be aware that there are some areas of poison ivy near the wet areas of the coulees. BTW-I’m from Seattle area. earthwards.blogspot.com/2017/09/potholes-coulee-what-happened-there.html

Hi there, thanks for watching my video. I researched the area and its history quite a bit, and this information came from the USGS (United States Geological Survey). You can read up on it here if you're interested: www.nps.gov/parkhistory/online_books/geology/publications/inf/72-2/sec5.htm

@@adventuresandreamsThe floor of the coulee is basalt. The granite is way below that.

The following is a quote from the multi-page article on the USGS site: "When flood waters cascaded down the steep southeast-facing slope of the monocline, this fold was eroded upstream across the zone of broken rocks and into the higher, flat-lying basalt, forming a typical recessional gorge now called Upper Grand Coulee (Fig. 18). Erosion and cataract retreat continued in Upper Grand Coulee until the basalt flows at the head of the Coulee were completely removed. This exposed the granitic rocks that form the Coulee floor and the foundations for Coulee Dam today. The granite is tough and hard, but most importantly, it is not jointed like the basalt, and therefore could not be plucked and removed by the flood. "
