HIKING & EXPLORING / FRENCHMAN COULEE - A Vast Rocky Place of Surprises!

Ойын-сауық

We hiked the floor of Frenchman Coulee to the waterfall near the far back wall. We also explored the top of the falls which originates from Hillton Lake. The coulee is a vast basin like area, with towering walls, and a flat bottom of sagebrush, sand, lava flows, and enormous boulders. It’s a place where ice age floods made a final plunge into the Columbia River. A two lane road follows the sheer cliff edge of the coulee, which plunges off one side and towers high above on the other side rising straight above the road. The coulee is a million years old, comprised of separate basalt flows - the Roza Member, the result of about five flows from just fewer than 15 million years ago. The Wanapum basalt had some 68 flows between 15 and 15.6 million years ago. At the bottom, the 15.6 to 16-million-year-old Grande Ronde with a hundred or more flows.
