By the way, April fool's jokes made in some partsof the world on KZread don't reach other parts of the world until the next day, or at least after midday on 1st April, when such jokes become invalid.

@@lindildeev5721 Yes it would make so much more sense to simply say 'nonante neuf' instead of 'quatre-vingt-dix-neuf". I sometimes jokingly call my wife the '99' character from Get Smart but in French though, it's a hoot. "Missed me by THAT much, Quatre-vingt-dix-neuf!!" But you have to be of a certain age to appreciate that... :D

Because for me as a Spanish speaker, it doesn't make sense there exist letters that aren't pronounced until I realized it was a joke. Comme on! In Spanish there are also silent letters: "h", "u" after "q", "u" between "g" and "e" as well as "u" between "g" and "i". "S" is silent in several/many countries as well as in regions of several countries. Other letters can be silent depending on the Spanish variety.

Tu m'en as eu là. Je suis professeur de français et brésilien et j'étais soulagé à la fin du video. L'ortographe française est complexe, mais elle suit des règles d'étimologie qui ont beaucoup de sens. Imagine apprendre et enseigner une chose pendant toute une vie et après tout changer.

Mais apprendre quelque chose et le changer fait partie du cycle de la vie, après tout, la vie est dynamique. Aujourd'hui encore, j'utilise "raíz" e "idéia" mais je sais que ces mots n'ont plus d'accents. Je suis heureuse de savoir que cela facilite la tâche de ceux qui veulent apprendre le portugais, notamment pour pouvoir transcrire ce qu'ils entendent sans en enlever le sens et la signification.

Bonjour ! Je suis prof de français et j'ai été prise de panique, proche de l'infarctus. Heureusement je me suis rappelée de ce jour spécial d'avril. J'adore, j'ai partagé avec tous mes proches !

Au début j'ai encore cru ce que tu as dit. Mais à partir de "tout devient è/é", c'était clair que c'est une poisson d'avril🤣🤣 La réforme des nombres serait très utile quand même. Ce n'est pas si abstract, vue que ça existe en Belgique/ dans la Suisse.

😂😂😂😂 Tu m'as vraiment eu là. Pendant un moment, j'ai pensé à jeter tous mes cahiers en français que j'avais depuis 17 ans et à recommencer.

@@azarishiba2559 I agree. I think spelling le chat helps me remember it is cat because of the silent 't'. The silent letters often make the word look more similar to the English, which makes it easier to remember.

Watching that on April 9th, I was suspecting from the beginning that it was from April 1, but when it came to the cancellation of liaisons - that was a joke 100%. All the proposed spelling simplification and the Swiss numerals are reforms theoretically possible, but you cannot cancel the liaisons that people actually pronounce.

You've got me. I believed that it's serious until the end.

Vous avez une telle élocution que vous étiez totalement crédible d'un bout à l'autre et j'en étais malade d'apprendre ces nouvelles réformes moi qui suis hyper attachée à la langue française et qui suis horrifiée devant les innombrables fautes d'orthographe que l'on voit partout. Dommage pour les nombres en tout cas, je vis en Suisse depuis longtemps et j’ai complètement adopté cette manière très logique de les dire, au point même que j’hésite pour un No de tél à dire en français de France quant j’y retourne. En Belgique et en Suisse c'est 70= septante, 90= nonante. Et ce n'est pas une blague. Par contre en Belgique on ne dit pas huitante pour 80, c'est quatre-vingts comme en France.

Lorsque, comme moi, on lit beaucoup de commentaires, on se rend vite compte que beaucoup appliquent déjà la nouvelle réforme de l'ortograf. Merci pour cette vidéo.

As a native English speaker who understands French, German, Latin, Russian and Spanish (among others), I'd say that even without all the gender, number and casing rules present in these other languages, English is by far the most difficult language of the Indo-European language family to master, particularly spelling-the orthography is horrific in comparison!

The joke worked on me as we are the month of May now and it took me a while to make the April fool connection 🙂 . I'm not a subscriber and don't speak any French but I watch a lot of other linguistics videos (though none on French, and mostly in Asian languages) and had this recommended in my feed, on April 14th. I was so confused watching this since I didn't expect to be recommended an April Fools video from a channel I never heard of before, 2 weeks after the 1st LOL. So I didn't even scroll down to see the upload date until like half way through the video haha... It was entertaining though so I don't regret watching anyway!

I had a similar idea some time ago, but the goal was kinda different: to see whether the extra things in the script that are not in the speech really are redundant and whether there aren't really cases when a written text could be incorrectly understood when read. The base rule was similar - the same pronunciation means the same set of letters used. Although I tried to stay with the original pronunciation rules, so a pronounced consonant at the end had to be doubled (je chantt) and the "revieved" consonants were extra attached (vou'z êtt). So "plus" could be actually written 3 different ways with "plu'z en plu" and "j n sê pa pluss". :)

Congrats - You succeeded in fooling me. I was pretty shocked to be honest. Struggled so hard when I was young and studied French in school and now - at soon age 72 I just reflected over this "new" trouble and said to myself - "no chance I would learn this before I die...". Greetings from Sweden also. Pardon moi - for not writing in French but I had essentially no problem following You talking/writing/explaining.

J'ai 73 ans. J'ai été ravi de constater que l'expression plutôt maladroite de soixante-treize ans est remplacée par une façon beaucoup plus logique d'exprimer le nombre. Mais je n'ai vu cette vidéo que quelques semaines après le 1er avril, et votre blague m'a donc complètement pris par surprise.

En tant que Français j'ai vu la vignette et je me suis dit "ils nous font quoi encore à l'académie!" Et ensuite j'ai vu la date de publication ahah. Au fait, moi qui suis dans la situation inverse (j'ai fais pas mal d'anglais à l'université et ai vécu au Pays de Galles), j'aime beaucoup vos vidéos, ça nous fais apprendre des choses et revoir les bases de notre langue.

c'est 01h40 après minuit, alors je ne suis pas sûre si je peux écrire tout en français, mais: j'ai détesté les lettres muettes depuis le début, mais j'ai panique quand j'ai vu les phrases sans ces lettres!! j'ai texté mon amie et dit que c'est trop tard de la nuit pour des nouvelles comme ça! après, je crois, 10 ou 15 minutes de les texts en panique je m'ai souviens "elle l'a posté 'il y a un jour' peut-être c'est un "aprilsnarr🇳🇴"" et oui!!👏 c'était un poisson d'avril😭 j'ai pleuré de joie!! je ne prendrai plus jamais les lettres muettes en vain😭🩷🩷
