It doesn’t look like an asscher to me, more like an emerald center.
This happens more often than you think. Sometimes people put a real piece of jewelry in a box with costume jewelry. When they pass, the children look quickly in the box, assume it is all junk and donate it or sell it at a garage sale. You have to examine everything. Money is also hidden behind framed artwork, in radiators, under wall to wall carpeting and even in empty medication bottles. Be careful.

We did that. My aunt brought us over a box full of costume jewelry when my sister and I were little. Her kids were grown and she thought we'd like to play with it. There was a white bracelet with red and blue stones. Years later she asked my mom if we still had it (we didn't). Turns out the bracelet was ivory and the stones were rubies and sapphires. It's probably buried in a landfill somewhere. :(

And also dont pass off silver jewelry with stones. Many assume that costume jewelry made with silver has rhinestones pasted on it. Double check. Some have precious and semi precious stones in it.

Who doesn’t check the Hallmarks on a piece of jewellery??? I had two people try to convince me a Fob was pewter, not sterling silver, because it had no numbers on it. It had no silver numbers on it because it was 129 years old and number for silver didn’t come in to use until early 20th century.
Rings from the 1920-39 were made with such taste.
Utterly gorgeous. I'd never be able to part with a ring like this!

What a magnificent work of art. The stones were cut to fit that ring. And they are flush set no prong. The level of engineering required to cut them to be so cohesive THAT ALONE is worthy of his pathetic under estimate. Looks asscher cut to me. Way ahead of it's time.

Sad point to note, despite the high craftsmanship, quality of stone and metal, if it doesn't belong to the High Jewellery Brigade it doesn't get as high a price! Brand names, be it big jewellery houses or exclusive designers, elevate prices immensely! 😕 That's why the antique dealer gave it a conservative estimate. There was no proof of provenance.

Actually I think he may be a bit dubious of where and how she got the ring. Something about her story didn’t sit with me. He seemed nervous talking to her. She seems like one of those ladies who does home health care who may have accidentally found that in her scrubs pocket when she got home.
@trishradloff8817

@@flophilp I don’t know. I once paid $5.00 At a second hand shop for a CZ in Silver. It was pretty and I thought I would put it in my daughters dress up box. I literally wore it home that day. Stopped at the Mall to get a watch battery at a jewelry store. While there the lady putting the watch battery in complimented my Ring. Said it looked very vintage. She put it under a loop , sure enough it was a Diamond from the 1920s. I kept it and wear it myself. I have not had it appraised but do know that it is actually a Diamond. Point is, you never know. People get jewelry in the strangest ways. Doesn’t mean they stole it.

If she had taken it to the pawn shops in my area, they would have told her that it was a CZ and only pay her for the band. She would probably walk out of the shop with $50, while they pocket some real money. I learned my lesson about pawn shops when I went to see how much they pay for gold jewelry that my mom had left us. And don't ever tell one pawn shop that another pawn shop offered you less, because then they believe that they need to offer you less also. One of them offered my sister $60 for an 18K gold necklace with a peridot stone, surrounded by a couple small diamonds. Of course, she walked.

Not sure the name- calling is necessary. I think it's fair to say that, in the aftermath of someone's death, their family isn't rushing out to have each item appraised. What a nightmare --- a lot of elderly die destitute or close to it. Imagine this was there all along and dementia robbed them of a chance to explain. One person's fantasy is another person's nightmare is another person's fantasy.

Bozo, 🤣🤣. Yup, I am surprised by how many ppl get rid of " junk" at yard sales because they are ignorant or don't care. If it's something they value or question, they can take it to jeweler for an appraisal fee of about $100. Do e this a few times myself

Wow
Someone thought a ring was CZ and sold it for 30 dollars. Imagine how they feel today.
That was very exciting... $30 became $30,000 haha 😄
I thought maybe it was baguettes stacked together. His explanation makes sense. I know there is a bit of a snub for those who know their jewelry gems for pieces that add smaller diamonds together to make them look larger and it can be a cheaper way to get a bigger engagement ring for the money but also doesn’t hold the same value. But, my personal taste is I like the way light bends through and around the added surfaces. It is beautiful I would not sell it. She got a bargain.

Excellent comment! I’ve seen a few rings in which an aggregate of diamonds are arranged to appear as one large stone, but I have never seen one this spectacular, and the workmanship was so fine that it took the experts some time to conclude that it was one smallish center diamond encircled by rhomboidal cut supporting diamonds.
