I'm doing avocados now--my favorite food to freeze dry. When I can get them for 50 cents each, I buy 20 a day (usually Aldi). I mash mine (with lemon or lime juice) so that I can do more than slices (I recommend using parchment paper). On a medium tray I do five mashed compared to about 4 sliced (medium to large avocados). One tray of mashed avocado split in two fits nicely in a gallon mylar bag and they stack flat and better in bins than the bulging slices. Slices are prettier though and make sense for trail mix.

Have you tried just FD sliced avocados like in his vid? I did and they were horrible after re-hydrating. They were slimy with no flavor.

@@mgideon12345 I have. Mashed rehydrates well, but slices do not. I don't rehydrate the slices--they're good as a snack as is.

I make a guacamole with Sauteed mix Spicy and fruity my garden peppers sweet onions, garlic. Then add tomatoes, bulgur wheat, parsley ( or you can just buy tabouli ) season and squeeze fresh lemons. I use the little green Rubber Silicone cube trays I bought from harvest right. Sometimes I just spread and section them off with the tray divider. I put 2 to 4 in a small little Mylar bag. In a 2nd little bag i put 6-8 little FD Pita chips for diping. I then add to a 1 gallon Mylar bag that has other snacks. I have a food and water bag by the door i grab before leaving the house. Thanks again for your videos.

A great strategy for purchasing avocados is after a big weekend event when markets are reducing their price before they get too old. That means I tried FD avocados purchased the day after the Super Bowl. Your soak of lime juice and water worked great. Then I sprinkled them with sugar after draining them. Our university student granddaughter [who has lived at times in Brazil as a child/teen during industrial engineering work projects assigned to our son] gave the FD version a definite thumbs up. I like them also; however, I have to admit the guac purists of the family won't even try them that way. Brazilians, as well as citizens of several other countries, eat them for dessert sprinkled with lime juice and sugar. The FD pieces certainly had a pleasant contrast of tart citrus and sugar plus a sort of creaminess from the fat content of the avocados.

Helpful video. Thanks! If using the knife with a glancing blow to get out the pit doesn't work, our son [who lived in the Canary Islands where avocados are eaten with a spoon] taught us to hit the pit straight on with a sharp knife, then twist the knife. Works every time. I like how you slice the avocado with a not-too-sharp knife. That works better than a tool I purchased on Amazon. If you salt the avocados, a las Islas Canarias, I'm assuming that will slow down the FD time, correct? Have you ever tried FD them sprinkled with sugar to eat them as is done in Brazil with a mixture of sugar and lime juice? This also would slow down the processing time, correct? AND.....referring back to your Freeze Dried Emergency Food Rations video.... All generations of our family devotedly watch all seasons of "Alone." So many of life's lessons become apparent in addition to that of having sufficient fat and protein in one's diet!

Since they say that fat doesn’t freeze dry well and it isn’t recommended for long term storage are you just not using them for long term storage? I have freeze dried avocados and they come out very dry and crunchy, so I’m always confused about food that contains a lot of fat. It is something that is very important in our diets and for long term emergency storage in case of shortages.

Yup, Fat is flavor and fat is important. 30g of fat in an avocado and a cup of mayonnaises are totally different. You can freeze dry fats and oils to a point. Overtime they may lead to rancidity. You need to keep moisture, light, temperature, and oxygen away.

Hi Phil, nice video again. I have another problem again. My „red sealing cap“ of the standard oil vacuum pump is broken, and in Germany there is no standard size in the store for this caps. Can you tell me which size it has? Or do you have any idea how to close the vacuum pump after I filled oil? Thanks a lot!!!

My guess it's a 3/8 MPT (Male Pipe Thread). You might be able to find a rubber test tube stopper or use a tight ball of aluminum foil, the same size as the hole, and thread it into place.
