We keep our freeze dryers set to 24 hours.... because why not? We never hit reset. We also pre freeze everything. It saves LOTS of wear and tear on the dryer.

Thanks for this... i bought my freeze drier with the primary intent of making healthy (fat free) crunchy snacks. i'm on an eternal quest to make a fat free potato chip. So far i've failed. i suspect my results are similar to yours with chick peas, i.e. the 'chips' powder in the mouth vs crunch or crisp up. i was crossing my fingers that your chick peas would be like the crunchy roasted ones... but i guess not. The snap peas were brilliant, can't wait to try that, i just bought a bag of those pea crisps at Costco yesterday with no small amount of regret for the processing ingredients (fat content), great idea!!! The avocado? i'm surprised that worked because of the high fat content in avocado, typically high fat or hi sugar stuff doesn't FD well. Re the avocados browning (oxidation), i use dehydrated lemon and lime juice all the time (can get it on amazon brand name TRUE lemon/lime). Sprinkling that on the surface can slow oxidation. That's a win too!! Crunchy mushrooms is another snack i'm trying to figure out how to make after getting addicted to SnakYard shiitakes i got at evil Costco lol.

Ohhhh mushrooms sounds like a great snack that would be yummy!!! Right the texture can be hard to get right…. I did do sweet potato chips in a previous video and they didn’t get too powdery, I boiled them for a few minutes before freeze drying so they were partly cooked.

@@DIYfreezedry okay, i tried mushrooms (shiitake) asparagus and avocado. i cut the asparagus into about 2 inch pieces, steamed then lightly coated them in powdered ranch dressing, froze, then FD'd. Taste is great, texture is typical freeze dried texture, they don't powder or slime when you eat them, but i wish for more crunch and believe i've figured that one out (read on). The shrooms i lightly coated in ev olive oil (i am going for healthy snacks, so i try to avoid added fat), garlic and salt, air fried till crisp, then froze and FD'd. OMG, the texture and taste are like crisped bacon to me. Definite win. The only change i'll be making is i'll keep them whole because they shrink significantly in the process. i suspect the secret to extra crunch is in the added oil during cooking/prep. so imagine asparagus will get a similar result if prepped like the shrooms? idk. The only thing i did with the avocado is sprinkle them with "True Lemon" dehydrated lemon as a seasoning.

You are WRONG about the O2 absorber. They can work several times. I have seen this proven with an indicator included with the absorbers.
