Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

My family loves freeze dried fruit and every time they know they are going to see me on the holidays, it's always on the list of requests. I am doing pineapple, apple, mango, raspberry and banana in the Harvest right freeze dryer.

    I commented part of this on your Campfire Breakfast video but you can buy a fine dispersement spray bottle that simply mists. It's $10-12 and I first discovered these bottles while chalk painting furniture. Try misting the pancakes, breads, and other items that need a little more than a damp paper towel gives them. I've not tried it yet, just saying that it's worth a shot!

    Some good friends of ours have had the HR medium dryer for quite a while. The wife told us to never freeze dry onion on the silicone mats. They absorb the onion juice! To further that thought... I just prepped our extra trays with frozen jalapenos I grew last summer using the parchment. When I do our garlic, I'll avoid the silicone too. It's an easy trade off to not have strong scented mats to dry fruit and other foods.

    We pre freeze as well , usually it is because everything comes out of our freezer before it goes into the Freeze Dryer. I usually lower the freeze time to 6 hours. A full unit(4 trays) of fresh pineapple( it was on sale) took us almost 50 hours. Parchment paper has been a great time saver as it keeps the trays clean & is porous . The kilowatt meter interests me greatly, going to have to check that out.

    My grandkids love mangos. Frankly dehydrated is a tastier snack than freeze dried. Freeze dried much better if added to flavour oatmeal, etc. For your niece try freeze dried corn kerbals (as from fozen). Those are like candy.

    My grandkids love the FD bananas. I just did 5 trays of sliced banana that took about 32 hours "not pre-frozen". I don't have that kind of room in my freezer. The newer machines software will do all the drying automatically. No need to make adjustments to the time unless you wont be there when it gets done - in which case you can add time in the final dry segment. The latest farmwear will ask if the food is solid or liquid as well as frozen or not. They've been able to shorten the freeze time and the overall cycle time is shorter. That farmwear will be available to upgrade via USB drive later this summer for a small fee. You haven't switched to the oil less pump yet. I've been running mine almost 24/7 since I received it in January 2019. No problems with it - no messy oil to deal with, and it runs quieter than the standard pump. Well worth the money in my opinion.

I'm getting up there in age and was looking for a little project to help offset my income a little. @Live.Life.Simple. - Hey Brian… I’m just wondering, is it better to NOT wash the raspberries before you freeze dry them? I heard that prewashing them makes them soggy. I’m also thinking that once they’re freeze dried, you could wash them off right before using them. The only other thought I have, is whether any pesticides that are on the raspberries might get absorbed during the freeze drying process. Kroger has them on sale this week, and I’m planning on doing a big batch this weekend. Your thoughts? Thanks.

  • @live.life.simple.

    I'm not sure that washing makes them soggy and even if it makes them a little softer, I would think that would change during FD. I like to wash everything from the store, even organic. Never know what things have been through on the way to the store or whose dirty mitts have touched them😂

    I was curious about the apples, but you didn't talk about them. We're the apples really crunchy or were they soft. I watched other dehydrating apples videos and they didn't look that crunchy. But that would mean there was still moisture present, which I thought wasn't supposed to be good for long storage.

    How long do you need to pre-freeze the food? What temp should it be at if it is fully dried? What do you do if it still has some moisture, like how can you still use that maybe sooner than storage?

  • @jenniferh851

    @jenniferh851

    Жыл бұрын

    I pre-freeze overnight usually, sometimes just all day - I put the food on the freeze dryer tray and stick them in a freezer. Just make sure all the trays you put in the freeze dryer are the same (all frozen or all not, don't mix). If things still have moisture I add more time to the drying cycle. If something accidentally gets a little moisture later (like my vacuum sealed jar becomes unsealed), I use it first. For comparison - My understanding is that dehydrated food removes only about 70% of water and has about a 1 year shelf life if stored properly.

    Cyanoxic Rose: I'm pretty sure he means to say that because the water is "pulled out" of the food, the flavors are more concentrated. I have found that to be the case for my FD fruits. I'm new at this (one month in). The only fruits I've done so far are lemons, limes, and blueberries, all of which had concentrated/intense flavors on completion. . . . Hope this helps. So, maybe the raspberries and others will stay intact if you rehydrate them by putting under a high-pressure humid air or something? Like in the mist for a few hours. But I’m not sure how to create a such condition…A pressure chamber with a humidifier inside? I know it’s too much hassle, but just for an experiment 😊

    In the long term a Harvest Right will save you money. They have a finance program if it's the cost stopping you. I think the oil less vacuum pump is well worth the extra money and I think that can be financed as well. I don't regret buying mine.
