Man, i love how open you are in sharing your learning through different stages of your journey. I relate to a lot of it but even the stuff i don't relate to I still respect your honesty and sincerity.

It's so cool when you're walking around the city! The streets look so empty compared to LA. I do miss the bigger markets and the amount of work. Little Rock is probably the smallest market in the country. Not really, but it feels like that sometimes. I might have a few shoots Orlando this year. I'll have to hit you up!

Yeah I’d love to help out on one of your shoots. I keep my eyes open for new places to live but I really do like Orlando.

A lot of new videographers think they need a course on how to sell videos for higher prices, but they really need to focus on doing a really professional job and earning repeat business. Connect with other video creators, freelance on bigger crews, buy professional gear and not just what's trending, and get repeat work rather than trying to seek out the rare retainer clients for lower prices. A good videographer with good gear and pro level work, gets more and better paying work, repeat. ❤

A good businessman with cheap gear can go even farther 😄 I swear some of the companies I freelance for have no clue about the video they are producing but they are excellent businessmen

Good video man! I'm still finding that happy balance for me, of what part of the industry I like best. Cuz I like being involved with pre and post, but production is definitely my favorite! It's cool to see that you've found which part you like the best, and you've leaned into that. I have an editor I recently connected with, who might be a good fit for you. We were on a call last night because we're pitching a production to an AI startup out here in SF that just got funded. I'll share this video with him so if he's interested he can reach out! You'll have to let me know when you're in SF. I live next to SF in a beach town! Love to treat you to dinner or let you borrow any of my gear you'd like to use (in case you don't want to travel with your tripod or something like that)

You are totally right about being in a major metro area. Dallas has been treating me well so far, way better than my home market of Washington DC ever did for me, the opposite side of that coin is that it's also very competitive, but the power of networking and making connections can take you really far if you really hustle. I also sent my editor friend the editing position info! Sorry to hear that the other editors weren't able to deliver.

@@davidmorefield DC is supposed to be a hub, and I don’t doubt there’s work , I guess in my experience finding other creatives who want to network is hard because the people who have already found success don’t really try to expand their network to people starting out. It could just be a me thing but I’ve found more success in the 2 years I’ve been in Dallas than the 22 years I lived around DC.

I could go for another jager bomb this weekend! Always good chatting, my friend!

So my wife and i have been thinking moving out of Orange County, but that's something i am concerned about. Moving to a more rural area means it's cheaper, but you're going to end up traveling out for a lot of the work.

Unless you are targeting the smaller clients, or the specific industry in that area. If it’s rural, then yeah. Not much opportunity. But if it’s the center for a certain industry or trade, that could help. Basically you need there to be a point of commerce for something. Here in Orlando, it’s tourism.

Hey dude, its a pain if your clients want smaller file sizes, even XAVC-L is a larger file size compared to a compact cameras options, its not really to do with it being an MXF tho, its more the bitrate rather than the file wrapper. A lot of those smaller fight night events are still using people with old JVC shoulder cams that only record at 35mb/s so that is what they are used to dealing with. Not much you can do about that with the FX6 being limited in record rates unless you want to do external record, but that adds bulk. Otherwise consider getting a camera that can accommodate a range of bitrates as a B-cam if its something that matters enough to your clients, or if you do a lot of event. Just out of curiosity I saw you shooting a vertical crop on your monitor, why not use the full sensor by having the camera vertical instead?

Too much work to change my whole rig. It would decrease the ergonomics. Easier to crop in post.

Also congrats on such good consistency of YT upload. Its a hard thing to find the time to do as consistently as you are doing it so good job

Out of interest , what are the usual day rates offered by production / asked for by DP.s , highest / lowest ,for most shoots in your market , DP with fx6 / couple of LED lights / tripod , nothing fancy just basic corporate kit.

@@davidmorefield Ive never edited , but quite a few friends who shoot and edit have advised me not to start ! endless stories of grief with clients and never ending revisions .
