Фильм және анимация

In this video I explain the Sony CINE EI vs CUSTOM Mode (flexible ISO) and which one should be used. I explain how the results differ in terms of dynamic range and image noise.

This has been the best demonstration I have seen so far for highlighting why it's best to opt for CineEI over custom mode. Took me a while to get my head around it, but this cleared things up perfectly. Thank you, Ronald!

WOW a great explanation. I'm an FX3 user. Footage shot in CINE EI 800 I can push the exposure in post and retain better dynamic range instead of raising the ISO in camera. How about when additional light is not possible and I'm looking at least 2 stop more, would it be better to go to the second base 12800 and use 2 stop ND?

Yes, that’s what I do as well. As soon as I would need to raise the exposure that much in post, I switch to the higher base ISO (12.800), lower the EI value to 6400 (so that I overexpose a bit to get less noise) and shoot. I have an explanation video about cine EI as well, if you’re interested.

thank you for your video. do you know if there is a way to put a preview LUT on the viewfinder in custom mode when shooting in Slog3 ?

Hi! As far as I know, you can put LUTs on the viewfinder in custom mode (by changing the base look) but these LUTs are recorded as well. I think there’s no way to just put it on the monitor and not record them baked into your files.

thanks for the video! Big downside to custom mode seems that you can't use LUTs to monitor without baking them in?

Yes, you are right, I think that’s only possible in Cine EI mode

one large component that I see missing on cine.ei videos is that it's designed to work with catalyst browse. You can adjust the EI values (similar to how you adjust the gain) in post using catalyst browse. (very different from increasing the exposure on your NLE)

Hi! I'm not exactly sure if I understand you correctly. But Davinci Resolve 18.5 has added "Sony Raw Controls" in the color panel. You can adjust the EI value from there quite easily. But I don't see much difference to when you do this manually with the HDR offset wheel. I do NOT think that these two methods give you noticably different results. So technically you can adjust the EI values in catalyst browse and in Resolve as well. Or did I misunderstand your question? But again: The EI is only an exposure index, it doesn't change the recorded footage at all. Let's say you use ISO 12.800 and an EI value of 6.400. When you bring this into Resolve, it shows an ISO value of 6.400 in the RAW controls and your image is shown DARKER than what it has been recorded. Because of course it still was recorded in 12.800. If you change the EI in Resolve back to 12.800, you see the native (unprocessed) SLOG3 signal.

Do you have any advice which settings can be changed to improve dynamic range for a7s III (s-log3)?

It’s the same on the A7siii, stay in the base ISOs of 640 or 12.800. that gives you the most dynamic range

@@RonaldKasper I have noticed that 12,800 on the a7siii is much cleaner with regard to noise than the FX6. The a7siii applies some sort of automatic noise reduction and the FX6 does not. You can adjust this in the FX6 menu, but it's not as solid of a performer as what the a7siii does automatically...at least that's what I've seen.

  • @RonaldKasper

@@toddpretre2198 that‘s true, the A7siii applies noise reduction automatically. That’s the reason I bought the FX6 because you can switch that off. I think the image gets really „plastic-like“ on the A7siii, I like to have more control over my noise reduction. I do it in Resolve and can take out some noise, bit not so much that it destroys the image.

I don't agree or missed something. This is not a matter of using cine EI, it's a matter of sticking to base ISO. Cine EI will just virtually increase exposure on screen only. I'm always using custom mod (called flexible ISO on FX30) so never using cine EI but still, I stick to base ISO, so can enjoy maximum dynamic range.

  • @RonaldKasper

    @RonaldKasper

Yes I agree and I exactly say that in the video. The question is only, should you use custom mode and change the ISO OR should you stay in the base ISO and change this signal (that has the most dynamic range) in postproduction. It doesn’t matter if you film in Cine Ei in ISO800 or in custom mode in ISO800. The results are the same. But you are losing dynamic range as soon as you start changing your ISO away from the base ISO in custom mode. That’s why I stick to cine Ei where this can’t happen, additionally I get all the cool features you have in cine EI.

cineei is confusing. i decided its easier to just shoot with luts that are exposed at 0, +1, and +2. So if i want to over expose i use my plus 2 lut. If i dont want to over expose i use my +0 lut.
