After a series of videos on how to switch from Google, it’s high time that we take a look at how well this “de-googling” thing has been going. Some of the projects I recommended no longer exist, and some didn’t quite fulfill my needs...

Ok, so, first of all, the search engine. There are plenty of alternatives that don’t rely on Google at all, and my favorite is Duck Duck Go. I’ve been using it on all my devices: laptop, desktop, smartphone, tablet… It’s fast, it has nice features, it’s super customizable, and it’s entirely independent of Google results. The “bang” features that let you use DDG as a proxy for other web searches, like wikipedia, is also super handy.
But the search results themselves… They sometimes lack precision. As long as I look for something fairly well know, a common search with plenty of available results, it’s fantastic. But if I decide to search in french, my native language, then it starts to fall apart. Results are less precise, less complete than what you can find on Google, and very niche topics are barely covered. I’d say DDG works 90% of the time, but for the otherr 10%, i’ve been coming back to Google, using the !g shortcut in DDG. I really hope DDG can improve its algorithm and crawler bot to make sure that I need to rely less and less on Google, but I’m not there yet.
As per email, I had moved to Zoho for a bit, after my “‘switch from gmail” video. Zoho is nice, it’s super feature complete, but to be honest, it’s also a bit slow to load, and too complete for my needs. I ended up sticking with Outlook.com, which is good, but not great. I’m currently looking into Proton mail which looks fantastic, and since they added a calendar now, it should cover all my needs.
My channels use their Gmail account still, though. You have to have a Google account for your youtube channel, obviously, and I haven’t found a way to move that email address to something else, apart from redirecting all mail from Gmail to another adress, which wouldn’t solve the issue of Google being able to read and parse said emails.
I used to rely on Google Photos, and played with Canon’s irista service for a while, but they ended up shutting it down, so I had to find another solution. What I’m using now is Pcloud: it has a mobile app that can sync all photos and videos to any folder in any number of computers, so I’m using that to keep all the photos and videos I take on my phone to all my machines, and it’s working very well.
Pcloud can do shared views for albums if you store them in separate folders, and you can personalize these, so it fits the bill for me, but without any photo editing tools included, I’m coupling it with the elementary OS photos app to make the very rare touch-ups I need here and there.
I never relied on Google Drive, and Pcloud is, at least as good, so everything is stored there for now. It integrates very nicely with Linux, with your storage appearing as a network drive you can access from anywhere, and syncing can happen folder to folder, so no need to store everything in a single folder if you don’t want to. I even use it to sync my notes in Notes-Up, which has no native sync function, and you could even set it up to sync any other app settings you want, for example game saves.
After looking at a bunch of alternatives, i unfortunately ended up going back to Google maps on my phone. On the web, I use DDG’s integration of Apple Maps, or Qwant maps, but since they have no mobile apps yet, Google Maps is still the best solution I found. Other alternatives are great, like Here Maps, but I find their interface more complex and convoluted, and they’re not as speedy.
As soon as Qwant Maps gets a mobile app, though, I’ll definitely move to it.
To conclude, my document editing needs are covered by OnlyOffice on nextcloud. My home nextcloud server hosts all the files I need to edit remotely, and the onlyoffice integration works super well.
And there’s still the elephant in the room: youtube. I rely on youtube 100% for the channel. There is no competing service with the same reach and the same capacity for generating views and revenue, unfortunately. I do have my channel synced on LBRY, though. It’s still in its infancy, but as The Linux Gamer pointed out in a recent video, LBRY pays a lot more to creators than KZread does.

I have switched from Google search in favor of Ecosia. Your searches generate little bits of money and on average 45 searches generates enough money to be able to plant a tree. The people that made it have been huge for the environment and I myself support their cause. I use (and would recommend) osmand for the map-app. It uses OSM (OpenStreetMap) maps that you can download for different countries/areas and use offline. It's main downside is probably that id doesn't know where everybody else on the planet is and won't be able to get you around traffic-jams. The directions functionality is in my opinion much better than that from Google maps.

I highly recommend you to use Tutanota over Proton Mail. All their servers and offices run on 100% renewable energy and it is a great mail service. Everyone talks about ProtonMail and their new calendar, but Tutanota was first to do it and ProtonMail basically added it after to compete. Tutanota is fully open source and has a better and more modern interface. There is not much reason to use Proton Mail over it, the only reason would be the VPN, but three are better alternatives for that...

For E-Mail I have been using Mailcow for the last several months and am happy so far. - You just run it on a linux instance with a bare minimum least 2GB of free ram (about 1G if you disable clamav) and docker. - Uses docker and can be started/stopped with docker-compose up/down - Includes a update.sh to easily update the whole installation - You can manage your domains and mailboxes in a nice web interface - SOGo is their web mail panel that has all your needs covered - Their wiki has instructions on how to setup your dns stuff. Your first mails to gmail and other providers should contain the word "Unsubcribe" and be longer than just one scentence to be sure not to get categorized as spam. Just be sure to backup the docker volumes (/var/lib/docker/volumes by default) as all your e-mail stuff lives there.

I've had a foot in the Linux camp for about 20 years, though I've got at least a finger in every OS camp... My heart's really for Linux. I think open source is the good and moral direction for software to take. However, as this video repeatedly alluded to but never made explicit, Linux has always been behind. There's never been a point where Linux was more feature rich than Windows or MacOS. Everytime I've been excited to find a feature well supported... wifi... multiple monitors... bluetooth devices... it's always been 5-10 years after it was common place for 99% of consumers. We should be taking a long look at ourselves. Why is Linux always copying instead of innovating? Innovation is what drives the open market and a killer feature could sway a lot of people. People thrash Siri and Cortana, but a shitty caked in option is better than no options at all. We're already ~5 years behind on smart phone integration. It's rough, cause it may not be wise to just skip over features like that, but still no one's gonna give a shit when Linux finally has a viable alternative to phone integration in 2025. All my contacts, all my calendars irrespective of service, all my text messages, are readily available on Windows and OS X, whether I'm on iOS or Android. We're only just now getting hints of some of that from Android to Linux. Me, personally, it's just how well Linux can refresh or empower low cost hardware. I take a $300 laptop from Lenovo everywhere running Linux Mint XFCE. It's well encrypted, can integrate external storage into the operating system, and I won't care too much if it's lost, stolen, or broken. But that's it. There's nothing Linux Mint can do as well as OS X or Windows 10 beyond that which applies to me beyond that money saved for a particular use case.

For the search engine, have you tried startpage? It takes the Google results and shows them to you without the tracking. For the maps, you could try out OpenStreetMaps (on mobile it works offline and you download the region maps manually, so it depends if that's convenient enough for you). Finally for the OS, there are many android based degoogled ones called AOSP you could check. Two of the most well known are lineages and GrapheneOS (this one only works with Pixel phones right now but is a full privacy os and even let's you use playstore anonymously if you need, or you can just use F-droid alternatives if they work for you).

You might want to try out Magic Earth as a map service. It iy closed-source, but it is not connected to Google and it is pre-installed in some privacy-oriented custom Android ROMs, such as /e/ and iodé, so it can't be that bad. It's not as good as maps, but it comes pretty close and if you encounter any problems or have questions, the developer team is quick to respond to your feedback.

1- Totally agree, what makes me use google search is its really good results for local none English searches. I try to use DDG from time to time and in my phone, but it's still lacks in many aspects and I can't blame them since google relays on its huge repertoire of search profiles to show you what you want. My solution is usually to set rules for containers in firefox, so every search must go with fresh profile.. this won't help much since the can link data by IP but at least less links to establish. 2- changing mails is really difficult especially if you established a presence with a certain email. So the alternative must be really good for me to do such an expensive move. Proton mail seems tempting but I'll let you bait the bullet and let us know how it is :D . 3- I've been while looking into pCloud lifetime thing, really tempting, but what concerns me is their claims regarding privacy.. is it rally as they describe? also they look relatively new 4- For maps, I use both Here and Gmaps. Here is really great for offline navigation and gmaps is great for looking for local shops and so on. I've tried openstreetmaps apps, but most of them are clunky and out of date. Sticking with Here and Gmaps for now. 5- Gdocs, I use it rarely and that made me not look for solution, but it's good to know if there is a good alternatives. I think it's worth considering that not many people are willing to invest a lot of time to maintain their nextcloud instances or have the knowledge to spin one in the first place, so I think this one is a niche solution and can't be adopted as a real replacement. 6- KZread, you summed it up.. nothing to compete here.. there alternatives are still way behind and most of them are unintuitive. 7- For mobile OS, I've tried /e/ project, the idea is really great and it's tries to sandbox google services somehow, but the initial setup process really painful and consumes a lot of time.. especially if you plan to use many gservices. So if you plan to use it, it's better to use it with the least amount of gservice, that way you will have a great experience. They also provide cloud services, but I don't know much about them to send them my personal data, but really worth looking into. My question is any suggestion on how to sync contacts?

For search engines, on those occasions that you need to use Google, I recommend "Start Page" because it anonymizes your search and gives you some distance from Google's data-harvesting. I still don't like Start Page because your searches are still supporting Google, but when you absolutely need to Google something, Start Page works. For cloud, I prefer Mega to pCloud because pCloud was putting ads on my desktop, which I cannot stand! And once I have time to set it up, I'm definitely going to use NextCloud. Maps is the biggest challenge. Open Street Maps is an interesting project, but not even close to replacing Google Maps. I am following you on LBRY, and I think LBRY is growing fast. So, I think that holds the most promise. :D

@2:24 - I find DuckDuckGo's technical info concise and it even gives computer-code examples related to what you're searching for as excerpts from technical platforms such as StackOverflow (coding), ServerFault (sysadmin) .. it even has in-page (search results) linting tools such as JSON and script "beautifiers" that make compressed code readable .. so, it really is either just as good, or even better than Google, in my experience at least.

for android OsmAnd is amazing. It is way better than google maps imo. You can download all maps to use them offline and navigation is way superior. only downside is with POIs and certain busnesses, that are only registerd on google maps and take forever to be integrated into open street maps. other than that it is sooo much better than google maps. If you download from the play store (wich I would not recommend) there is a free versin on wich you can only download up to 7 Maps and the full version is like 7€. However the full version is open source (apache) and you can compile it yourself or download it from the open source app store F-droid free of charge.

Couple of issues with pCloud: Sometimes it can hang while doing sync, and there's no activity log, so you'll have a very hard time detecting which file might be causing the issue ... Like, keep KZread and any email regarding that youtube into one account. Then, on another browser, you can use a different KZread for another set of interests with another gmail for that. It also let's you split the accounts for specific searches when you are forced to use google instead of duckduckgo... If you use a VPN properly, then KZread would get half the data and not know it's you and you can split off data into other accounts. But for Maps.... you're kinda stuck, sorry....
