before safety ground (and polarity) was added to plugs, people could plug appliances in however they liked. Both prongs were the same size and there was no ground. Back in those days everything had metal and chrome chassis. Since engineers were safety minded, they would attach the case to neutral, but there was a problem. Since a user could plug the polarity of an appliance in however he wished, one could plug the appliance in so the case was actually hot. not a problem in most cases, since touching it merely rises you to line voltage, but if at the same time you touched a grounded sink, faucet, or another appliance plugged in the other way, you would get a shock of full line voltage. It was deemed bad that a housewife who was touching the toaster, and the refrigerator, which were plugged in with opposite polarity, would give her a full voltage shock!!! it was considered...... unsafe. Another shock hazard was - even if two appliances were plugged with both devices in phase - there could be a voltage potential difference between the cases anyway because neutral is load carrying, so if they were plugged in to a line with a significant load, there could still be a voltage large enough to shock... or if they were on different breakers there could be a significant voltage. Thus was born the safety ground !!!!! (S/G). So the NEC guys decided to do two things. First - require three pronged outlets.... add a safety ground for the chassis so it can be grounded safely without the danger of load bearing neutral voltages. Second - make the neutral prong larger than the hot prong so if the device does not have the third grounding prong, the two prongs of the plug itself can still force the user to plug the polarity in properly - making it impossible to plug something in "backwards" (if everything is wired correctly LOL) I think of this little story about safety ground every time you tell your refrigerator story!!! A barely interesting side note - Almost all of the outlets in north America are installed upside down. They are supposed to be installed with the ground prong facing up. If you look at the patent, the ground is at the top. The engineer who designed it said this was to reduce the chance that a paperclip or other metal object would cause a direct short if dropped on the prongs. he reasoned that the ground might deflect it or at least there was a chance the metal object would touch ground and neutral rather than being guaranteed to touch hot and neutral as they are normally installed. Electricians put them ground down because it looked better - it made a little face!!! This "face" installation (which is technically upside down) has become the de-facto standard. Since they are almost universally installed upside down, right angle plugs are made backwards too, so they angle down when plugged in, ground down. To tell the truth, I install them upside down too because of this de-facto standard even though I know it is not according to the specs of the inventor.

In most of Europe we use the schuko type F plug. This has two small ground clips; one on each side; which make contact before live and neutral connect. Other than that it is completely symmetrical so live and neutral can be switched randomly depending on the way you insert the plug. That means every device has to tolerate live and neutral being flipped. Because everything tolerates being flipped non-electricians do stupid shit like mix up which wire is live and which is neutral when they wire light switches and sockets. This means that the switch can be sitting on neutral, and it will still work and turn the light off, and the lamp can be floating at mains voltage when you flip the switch off and the wire that is colored as a neutral might be live.

This is EXACTLY why safety ground was added in the US sometime in the early 1960's. Neutral is a load carrying ground and Safety Ground is non load carrying. I have seen voltage as high as 50 volts on neutral referenced to S/G In an office building with a lot of equipment like computers or in industrial settings. Many people think neutral and safety ground is the same since they anchor in the same place in the breaker panel, but they are not!!!! One of the first thing I teach my technicians is be wary of neutral!!! You can get complacent and since it is white, treat it like a dead wire. It can carry enough voltage to give you a good zap if it is load carrying! Also, if there is a break in neutral between you and the panel, you can have full voltage hanging off of it inline with a load. This can place a dangerous amperage through you if you become part of the wire to the panel . If that load is a motor or piece of equipment it will try to push the amperage to make that load go, using you as a series resistor.... One of the most deadly shocks you can get. MUCH deadlier than if you were shocked with a hot wire, because of the push from the load. A shock from an open neutral is the WORST shock you can get.... and an easy to get shock because you get used to neutral being grounded. BEWARE of neutral wires when working on nonfunctional equipment until you know neutral is intact. Many times if a piece of equipment has a power fault, it is a loose neutral, because neutrals tend to get wired together in big bundles with big wire nuts, more than should be in the wire nut, and one of the neutrals slip out of the connection !!!

Great video! I guess this trick with the lamp to check grounding wouldn't work in France, as we have GFCIs at the general switchboard so there is no way to "escape" it. Also, in France, Neutral and Earth are not shorted together physically (Earth is connected in every house to the actual physical ground, while Neutral comes from the electrical network) so I was wondering if it would make the voltage between neutral and earth higher, but it does not as I get 0.6 V.

@@allothernamesbutthis Yea Scopes are really expensive because of the software upgrades. Most manufacturers use the same Hardware for multiple models in a series and use a software lock to block features. The Rigol 5000 series base model costs 999 but with all the upgrade licenses it costs over 4k. Some scopes can go from 4-5k up to 20k+ once you buy all the feature unlock codes. The hardware is the same though. That is why right to repair is so important. If we own the hardware e could make our own firmware such as sigrok and not need their software unlocks. There one budget brand called Hantek who makes scopes that are affordable. They also don`t charge crazy amounts for every feature upgrade. They charge for more bandwidth but not nearly as much as the big players. Theirs start around 180-200 and with the upgrade go up to 490. They have 2 new models that go up to about 1k with the full bandwidth unlocked. A lot of those unlock codes can get hacked though by crafty hobbyists that use the debug port to unlock them. Rigol has made it rather easy lately because the hobby guys then get their work to buy their stuff. Basically free advertising. Building a scope does require expensive parts and the big players have custom chips which have a big upfront cost. After that is recovered the hardware becomes much much cheaper to produce. I wish some company would make 1 scope chip and sell it to everyone instead of keeping them for themselves. That way smaller companies have to use FPGA chips which drives up the cost.

There would be alot of old footage to comb through though.

The electricity goes from the live wire to the load or circuit and then goes to ground through the neutral wire, which is the return to ground connection. If you harvest electricity from the ground connection you put a larger load on whatever is been used at the time to get that power, which your meter is billing you for.

@@johnjohn-cs9eu Canada's average energy cost is $0.174 per kWh but that's mostly due to the northern territories which have higher prices. If you exclude them the average is $0.135 per kWh. If I remember correctly (I haven't checked my households hydro bill in a a couple years) then my in area (southern manitoba) we are paying $0.095 CAD per kWh. The world average price is 0.141 U.S. Dollar per kWh which means Canada is below that especially since 1 USD = 1.28 CAD. In summers when we have around +30 to +35 Celsius then my households average monthly bill is around $60-80 CAD and that's WITH the the A/C blasting. Now in winter months that changes a lot. We have a fairly large house and in winter months when it goes to around -30 to -45 Celsius then our bills skyrocket to around $300 a month (worst month was $415 but it was an extremely cold period where we had wind chills bringing temp down to around -52 Celsius). Anyway that's not half our monthly salary as a full time employee even at minimum wage which is currently at $11.90 (in Manitoba at least)
