Mike, there are savoury desserts in Japan. The noodle dessert you had is a konjac noodle version of the savoury dessert "tokoroten", which normally has agar agar noodles instead. The sauce is close to ponzu sauce with soysauce, mirin and vinegar. You usually put a little bit of the spicy mustard on as well. Eating dessert at the end of the meal isn't part of Japanese food culture but a foreign thing that's become more common in recent decades. Japanese meals often have sweet-savoury dishes in them so there's no idea of having a sweet treat at the end to contrast with the savoury meal. Instead, Japanese desserts and confectionaries are helpers to drink green tea during tea time. So if it helps you drink the bitter green tea, it doesn't matter if it's sweet or savoury, because it's not a contrast to a savoury meal.

the cold noodles at the end were labeled "hiyashi chuka" aka Chinese style cold noodles... it's not dessert lol. the one above it is supposed to mimic raw liver sashimi. I think that was just the cold food bar, so regular food plus dessert
Konjac (or konyaku in Japanese) is a standard item put into Oden. And people often put spicy mustard on Oden so it is not really unusual to have konjac with spicy mustard. Oden is often considered a winter food since it warms you up well and putting spicy mustard on the items makes one feel even warmer. If people want an easy way to eat konjac in Japan, just go to any convenience store selling Oden and take the white or grey jelly thing in there along with some other items.
”Wow i never seen a kiwi tree before” I didn’t even know kiwis grow on trees tbh idk even know why but i never even tought about where kiwis grow
i love Strictly Dumpling but i'm curious how many people would click on this video if it was titled "FREE KONJAC BUFFET! All You Can Eat FREE JAPANESE KONJAC BUFFET. And I dig Konjac, but I wouldn't travel 15min to visit a Konjac factory, nevermind an hour! I'd have to be paid to visit......... And something tells me that that might have been the case here

I would click, coz Konjac cost a lot in EU.
Mike is exploring everything in the world, really love it when u choose to appreciate nature than just taking a cab
Free jelly buffet just sounds so funny. You had me laughing throughout. 😂 And then you actually liked everything and said you’d go everyday. Gotta love your enthusiasm. I actually love konjac too, in oden, and my kid loves Japanese jelly snacks. Thanks for showing us, cuz otherwise I doubt we trek out there! We’ve also been enjoying your other videos past couple months. 👍
I only tried konjac jelly in a dessert. I was surprised by how firm it is. I'd love to try all those different dishes. 😋
Its snappy, got it 😂😂
I would buy konjac jellies and have them in the fridge at work for a zero calorie treat, but someone kept stealing them, so I refilled empty containers with soap water. Thief ate two of them before noticing. REVENGE! Anyway, this was interesting - all we get are the jellies and the zero noodles here in Australia. I hope we get more varieties soon.

How was your gastro situation after all that konjac? Did more research after watching this video and seeing articles of gastro distress - no cal so people eat too much and get backed up from that much fiber.
Definite change of pace. Liked it.
So you're telling me that there is a food out there that can be made into tons of different dishes both sweet and savory, is very affordable and has little to no calories? And I'm just hearing about it now???
I have ordered Shirataki noodles often and I really enjoy them as stir fry or ramen, but ordering them through Amazon adds up. I may go to my local Asian market and get some, I had forgotten them!😊
THIS is probably my most FAVORITE episode of Strictly Dumpling ever, just like a FUN documentary- with eating!!!
After Mike casually tore through a couple bento boxes, this turned into a more unique episode than usual! Loved the look of all these konjac treats! A trip to Japan sounds great right about now...
That looks superb, I wish I could get that many konjac options over here.

Love KonJack noodles. I discovered them on one of your previous videos and saw them in the Asian section of a local market and bought them. It took the guilt out of eating regular/ or whole wheat pasta. Great video. I didn't know it was so versatile! Great content Mike as always.😊

Omg I was there in October. I really enjoyed the place. Bought so much stuff and my suitcase were so heavy with konnyaku. Free buffet was awesome. I can’t believe Mike went to Takasaki. My sister lives there. There’s mentaiko park close from there too. Great video thank you.
This was quite interesting, thx for sharing!

Never heard of konjac before. Definitely going to look into buying it locally. I appreciate you sharing. Watching from Ontario Canada 🎉
mike you need to make a video out of all of your videos of your Favorite food item and runner up food item from every country you have visited. It would be a deff watch!!! wouldnt cost you anything but your editing time and the payout is worth it!!!
Mike, I am a super fan. I've been following you for a long time. you were living in Queens, but I think you were living in the Elmhurst area (I grew up in Woodhaven) I worked as an EMT over at the Elmhurst hospital. If you travel worldwide with your partner you should get her to help you. It will boost your viewership with the wives. I am jealous because I was in Japan back in 1984-5 when I worked for a computer company Digital (DEC) I was there for just over 3 weeks at Canon. I was an engineer doing a technical repair manual on one of their inkjet printers for my company. The engineers always want to go out drinking after work, but I did not drink. Anyway, always love all your videos.
My mother always would say that it is good for you. It helps clean the blood. She was right. Of course we did not care about the health benefits just that we loved eating it.

Hi Mike, I think that's regular mustard just not "American mustard" its normally closer to Wasabi outside of the US.
I find it wild they give this away, it’s SO expensive to buy konjac noodles here in England, like £5/$7 for a 100g pouch!
