People throw away all kinds of expensive stuff all the time because to most people it's "old junk", but it's always shocked me more with cars since it's so widely known that people like them and they can be valuable. I collect and buy and sell video games and always ask for them at garage sales and other places. I've pulled $1000+ worth of stuff out of people's garbage cans before. Just tossed in a bag from the closet and right into the trash. No thought put in to it whatsoever most of the time, cars or not.

@@Snarl616 That's the conundrum of having an oldschool BMW these days. You can buy one for 1,000$ but you will spend upwards of $20,000 to get it "perfect" again. Spare original parts are getting incredibly rare and expensive, luckily a lot of companies have been doing reproduction parts. All that being said, they are hand made cars assembled by people. They just need some love and money thrown at them.
I love how you can almost hear the car go, “Ahhhhhhh.” Another great save, Larry!

I understand what you mean. For me it is similar to the makeover. I think for me it is that I understand and know it takes several hours to several days to accomplish these tasks, but seeing the conflict, the remedy then seeing the final outcome in a single video is very soothing and relaxing for me. Heck, some videos even got me emotional for whatever reason. Thanks Larry for your videos!!

Larry you definitely did car fans a solid by rescuing the BMW and not only that but paying it forward!!!! Job well done sir!!
Larry amazing job as always! It was an honor to meet you! Dustin and I will make sure that BMW lives it’s best life!! Thank for the opportunity again!!
Just a heads up, not that it matters now with it given away but - those wheels are E39 525i Wheels. They aren't style 5's or anything original to the E28 chassis.
My favorite 5-series body style. The deterioration of the clearcoat and trim is familiar - my dad had a 1984 733i that he kept for 25 years and parked in the Florida sun every workday. Had the whole car repainted once.
Larry, I love what you did with this car. I was hoping that you would show us what you did to fix up the roof with the washed out clear coat. I just bought a car that has the same sort of clear coat issue on the roof and wanted to see how you would address it. I have been hoping there is a solution that I can try before simply respraying it.
WOW! Larry- Thank you for saving this vintage 5 series BMW! As a BMW CCA member, this made me extremely happy! I'm a long time fan and you are doing incredible work! I've learned soo much from your videos. Thank you!
These older 535's were such lovely cars to drive when they were new, my father had one when I was learning to drive, I've had 2 of them over the years as well, quite a sleeper in the day, Rj in Oz

Pretty daring yet rewarding using the 1500 grit sandpaper.I love how you detailed all the trim back to its original look.Everything on this BMW was pretty much flawless except that small portion on the front of its hood.
I must say it's amazing to see how far you've come. I remember when you were doing this out of your van. You also had that Chevy car that you said you used to sleep in. Your channel and your story is very inspiring.
Thanks for saving this one Larry! I had the same car a few years back and it was a dream to drive. They aren’t making these anymore, so glad it ended up in good hands and not the crusher!
Sick car! Side story: my first computer and German teacher (in Germany) was from east Germany (late 80’s). One day my friend and I were staying after school playing in the yard and watching him leave in his old BMW. He appeared shamed, but to us he was so cool. Wish i could tell him our side!
I belive this is the most "glass" i have seen. That paint looks so damn amazing now. But how did the sunburnt roof looked after? The rims came up incredible aswell, in the preview i thought they hade been refurbished. The interior looked like new, some moose on that and its was alive again. That plastic coating is amazing, what a transformation. Holy Wow.
Had this same car with a 5 speed almost 20 years ago. Got it from my dad but we eventually didn't have the time or money to keep it in good shape. HVAC guy saw it in the garage after doing some work on the house and was super excited. Asked a bunch of questions about it and we eventually sold it to him. I can only hope he gave it half the love you did to this one and it's still running on the weekend roads somewhere.
Looks like a Racing Dynamics front spoiler, Hella E-code headlights, E39 wheels... this car was clearly loved at one point in its life. Plus, E28s are currently bringing premium prices on the used car market. One has to wonder how it ended up abandoned. As always, fantastic work on bringing this one back to glory.

Those wheels are BMW Style 29 from 1997-2003 5 series e39 chassis and have a 74.1 hub bore vs the e28 535 having a 72.56 hub bore. They require hub rings to mount accurately to the hubs or else a wobble can occur. I suggest metal (alu) rings not plastic. The wheels are not BBS RS 3pc from the 80s or Alpina's or Hartge's and if you want a center cap I have one, used, for free plus the cost of postage. They're probably a $2-400 set of wheels in good shape and are an excellent fit for these e28 cars, I believe about 16x7 et20.
Some of my favorite vidoes on the internet. Thanks, Larry. Great job, dude.
Thanks for saving this classic from the junk yard, Larry. I used to have an ‘87 535is with a 5-speed manual and absolutely loved it. Hearing the engine fire up and purr brought back the memories. 😊
E28 535i was my original dream car. I still remember sitting in one, white over red interior, in the showroom at Wide World of Cars in Spring Valley while my dad tried to justify a 528 on his budget. We ended up with a 5000S Turbo but I never forgot that car. The smell, the computer, the feel...amazing.
I had a 1990 (E34) 535i, and I still dream about driving that car to this day. Not much on the road like it, great torque down low, confidence at high speeds, and sticky cornering. A really satisfying car to daily drive... although maybe not as much in NYC. I'll definitely get another one someday if I can manage to hit the powerball, lol. Thanks for sharing!
this was my first BMW...1986 black on black 535i 5 spd...this started my desire and love them...wanted to get back into it again...went through e28, e32, e34 etc...thats a true car in my mind and heart...LOVE IT....thank you for saving HER!!!!...keep it up, your channel is ....

E28 owner here - at 7:19 "next I removed the..." and my mind started to complete the sentence with "the annoying door chime's power..." Haha, always first. Awesome transformation and a car saved, the car gods thank you Larry.
Always a great treat to see your videos. I am curious about your thoughts on chemical iron removers? Seems like this would've been the perfect candidate for that step, either before claying or after claying/before polishing.
My dad bought a 520i from that generation back in ‘94 in Stuttgart. It was relatively new (had just about 50k km on it); some guy back in Albania offered him $20k at the time (bc uno, Albania who just came out of communism) for the car but he categorically refused. He loved every km he put in it. He just loved that car in general, so much so he even drove it all the way to Turkey just to have it serviced. One day I will hopefully buy one to surprise him, inshallah 🤲
What a gorgeous car that is. Well done. BTW I super dig the 70’s style audio along with the cleaning 😊
Great detailing job. Bmw e28 has been a long time dream of mine. Since childhood i still remember green 524td model that my neighbor had. I was scared from that car because it looked mean and always walked across the road whenever i passed it. Now they are so much up in value and unaffordable(atleast in EU)
Larry's horrified face @4:02 when he started scrubbing the paint is hilarious. You can hear the rag getting caught on the junk!
Thanks for another great video and transformation. Also, the music selections were great too. I'm also digging that color on the BMW.
I love the old 5-series cars. Glad you decided to save it. I had a 1985 BMW 325e I bought in 1988 and I loved that car, and that era of BMWs. Wish I still had my 325e.
