Freddy Got Fingered - Nostalgia Critic

Ойын-сауық

It's a new kind of bad, one never thought possible. Has this film elevated awful to a new art form? What has been unleashed? Nostalgia Critic takes on Tom Green's, Freddy Got Fingered.
Support this week's charity - fisherhouse.org/
Freddy Got Fingered is a 2001 American surrealist black comedy film directed by Tom Green and written by Green and Derek Harvie. The film follows Green as a 28-year-old slacker who wishes to become a professional cartoonist. The film's plot resembles Green's struggles as a young man trying to get his TV series picked up, which would later become the popular MTV show The Tom Green Show.

    This is a true story- that ending nearly DID get the film an NC17. Green, deeming that rating "porn, with murder", literally sent the scene back unchanged, except the kid was ADRd the line "I'm okay, guys!". *And the MPAA accepted that.*

    It's not just that he wanted to make an intentionally bad movie, it was also an act of protest against the Hollywood machine itself. Basically at the time Tom Green was basically one of the most famous comedians in the world, with The Tom Green Show being a huge hit and his podcast-esque sister show Tom Green's House Tonight also being around or at the very least it was on the way. So being "the big thing" some big Hollywood studio comes to Tom Green and says "alright look the kids like you, we don't know why, but fuck it here's $1 million dollars. Go make a movie, it can be about anything you want as long as it only costs $1 million. Now scram!" and Tom's like "Anything I want eh?"

    Thank you! I was really struggling on this review. But wouldn't there have been better ways to demonstrate this? For instance The Godfather. Humor in this isn't the important but rather with The Descent. So you could show Doug being charged further and further down into the bowels of this movie until finally he is left no choice but to accept it , to become part of the very thing that he was trying to fight against. At the end of the review, he could have killed those who he was talking about how bad the movie was as daddy do you want some sausages play over and then he closes the door starting the movie up again the signifying that he has become one with the movie. Or if you really wanted to start at the end, Citizen Kane it. Just if you're going to reference from the great movies and contrast to Freddy Got Fingered in such a way that shows the descent into madness, their films are do a much better job of that.

    I don't think bringing in the Focus Group Analysts would have worked well for this particular review. The Critic brings those characters into an episode if he's reviewing an adaptation of a famous work that notably suffered from heavy studio interference. "Freddy Got Fingered" was a project that Tom Green had near-total control over as co-writer, star, and director...in other words, it's pretty much Green's fault, not the studio's.

    “Freddy Got Fingered” made over $14M at the box office (which was more than its budget.) Of course, more people saw it at the theaters than the box office figures show (like double or triple the number). Kids would buy tickets to “Crocodile Dundee 3” then sneak into FGF. There’s no way CD3 would have made almost $40M if not for FGF.

    I hated Tom Green, never really cared to see his talk show. And I definitely didn't want to see the movie in theaters. But then we had a promo copy in the video store I worked at, and I thought 'what the hell, let's see how bad it really is'. And I couldn't stop laughing from beginning to end. I mean, it does keep going on after what you assume is the real 'ending', but that's part of the joke (you'll see someone in the stands holding a sign pointing to that fact). I think it was brilliant. I must have watched it a dozen times since then.

    As a kid, I watched this movie with the commentary on and there are some little fun facts about some of the scenes that were pointed out in this review. According to Tom, the "my ear just popped" thing was completely improvised because his ear actually did pop in the scene from chewing gum. Also, the surgery footage that Eddie Kaye Thomas's character Freddy was watching was actually the footage of Tom's cancer surgery.

    You know, there is this wonderful quote of Stephan King that he said when he first saw Kubrik's adaptation of The Shining - "This is a movie made to hurt people". And it is very true for The Shining, although probably not in the way that King's meant. It has this abyssal-quality to it, that just keeps people coming back. Something beautiful, yet incomplete. Surreal, yet terrifying. And for some reason, I felt the same thing when seeing those sausages hanging on strings from the ceiling and moving in accordance with Gorde's fingers, all while he sings to his father about whether or not he would like some of the aforementioned sausage. It was horrible. It was terrifying, And it struck a chord within my soul, leaving me with a sense of helplessness like I've never felt before. So yeah, this is a movie made to hurt people. And I'm hurt. I think we all are.

    I think the one scene in Kubrick's Shining we feel that absolute, utter helpless confusion is when I think Wendy, (could be wrong), sees the man in a dog suit in the bedroom with a man in a formal suit, like wtf? And obviously that naked beauty turned elderly and decayed is another thing but that we can chalk up maybe to the haunted hotel with a dark, manipulative past...whereas the above scene I listed....What. The. F?!

  • @attailavie5645

    @attailavie5645

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@Heavenlyhounds96 I am not talking about a specific scene. That feeling of helplessness is one of the things that define The Shining, and every single film-making technique used in it was meant to enhance that feeling - the weird, uncomfortable, toy-like aesthetic of some rooms, the wide lense used to shot the film, the ghoulish appearance of the actors, the shots of the hallways that seem to last forever, and always leave you with this uncomfortable feeling of claustrophobia, as if their walls are closing in. This movie achieved the same thing, but while The Shining did so with brilliant direction, this film does it with terrible, terrible writing. "The institute for sexually molested children", Gorde holding a sausage as his dick and slapping a worker with it while standing on the assembly line of a factory and screaming "ding dong", and those sausages, hanging from the wall and moving in this twisted, haunting harmony. This scene did make me laugh, though, it was the laugh of a madman, who stared into a Lovecraftian incomprehensibility and was left no other choice. It cracked me up, but as it did, it took everything that I had inside me, and left me an empty, hollow shell.
