You'd be amazed at how many helpers are standing around, waiting to be called in to help, or waiting for someone else to show them that help is needed. When one person goes out to help, other people see that person and realize help is needed. Some of them will take that as a call and become helpers themselves.

I'm an ER worker. I saw a deep tragdey tonight. A mother will go home knowing that she will never see her son go to college or get married or have children of his own. Maybe he left a mess in the living room and when she gets up tomorrow she'll see it and forget for a moment that he is gone. It's a weight on my soul. However being a helper is my greatest joy and privilege. Sometimes we win, sometimes we don't.

5/31/22 Today it's been one week since the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, TX where 19 precious 4th graders and 2 of their teachers were viciously murdered, 17 others were injured and hundreds more survivors and their families were unimaginably traumatized, scarred for life. I've gotta admit, as the parent of two teens in the US, I'm really struggling with this one. I cry every day and it's difficult to overcome the fear for my own children and others. Since gun violence is now the leading cause of death for children and teens in the US (!), my fears are not just limited to school hours, either. We hear gunshots in our own neighborhood at least once or twice a week. To say that I'm frustrated by the collective inaction in this country is a massive understatement. Day by day as we learn more about the abject failures and cowardice of the police response, I am once again finding comfort in these words spoken by Fred Rogers all those years ago. The police in this case were not the helpers (in fact, they may well be the most hated individuals in the country right now, aside from the shooter). But there are many other helpers: the local funeral homes offering free services for everyone who died, the restaurants feeding the families for free, the outpouring of love, support and shared pain and solidarity coming into Uvalde from every corner of the globe, people giving whatever they can to authorized GoFundMe accounts, even the people posthumously sharing a TikTok dance video of one little girl who was killed (Tess Marie Mata, age 10, whose dream it was to have her dance videos go viral). There are scores of people pitching in to help in many ways small and large, which I think we all need to see right now. I often return to these words during other mass shootings or mass casualty events like wildfires or natural disasters. I even comfort my own children with these words, and his mother was right: you can ALWAYS find the helpers. Always. It can give us comfort and strength, and it can keep us from losing all faith in humanity.

Whoever put a 'thumbs-down' to this video, should be ashamed. Mr. Rogers was a humble, wise, intelligent, gentle, generous man (among many other positive adjectives).

One of the most powerfully accurate statements I've ever heard.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, ‘Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping'... Because if you look for the helpers, you'll know that there's hope.”

We need this guy, now more than ever.

Don't just "look for the helpers," but be the helpers. The presence of helpers in any disaster indeed offers hope in moments of chaos. The world might feel very scared right now, with a pandemic spreading across the globe, yet, somehow, there are still people caring for others while risking their own safety. One of the easiest ways to teach your children to be helpers is by doing more helping yourself. Modeling, also called observational learning, is one of the most important and underestimated tools we as parents, teachers, and mentors possess to mold the next generation.

There is an underlying message behind this He is keeping it simple but his intention of getting towards the younger audiences so he says to look for the helpers as a sign of hope in a destructive world that the media falsely portrays which isn't true in real life. He is basically saying the media is one sided.

Here after Christchurch. I think I needed to hear those words again today. Reminds me to look for the helpers - and there were many.

The sister who got the women and children out was a helper. She was murdered because she ran back to help her husband in a wheelchair. May God rest her soul :(

Fred Rogers is one of those people that are international treasures, they're both gifts and boons to humanity as a whole.

I have had to come back to this far too many times in recent months. I need the reminder.

Anyone in March 2020 need this?

If there was ever a human to be gifted immortality, I would have wished Fred Rogers to accept it. We need people like him around, as a teacher as much as a friend. But knowing him for the humble man he was, he would have refused that gift. He was always kind, and his thoughts were genuine, loving, and simple; just as they should be.

I don't think he would have refused it.Because yes he is humble... But he is also generous with himself... Immortality wouldn't benefit him, he would have to see everyone he loves die... He would do it because he would be able to help people for countless generations, he would accept it for the sake of helping more people.

I came to this clip to remind myself of the good that is out there, to try to remain hopeful.. and so, in memory of Mr. Rogers, I'll share a fun-fact here. If you've already heard it, then it'll just be nice to think of his pure goodness again: Mr. Rogers was once sent a letter from a blind child, asking him to say it aloud when he was feeding the fish. He said that he had been made aware that Mr. Rogers fed the fish every episode, but he wanted to Know when it was happening. So -- from that point, forward -- Mr. Rogers made a Point to say, "and, now I'm feeding the fish" (or something of the sort) Every. Stinking. Time that he fed those fish for the remainder of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. *I should add the part that I hadn't remembered when I originally shared this fun-fact. The child that wrote that letter, was worried that on the days (prior to sending the letter) that Mr. Rogers didn't narrate when he fed the fish, that perhaps the fish were being forgotten/unfed. The main purpose of his request was out of concern for the fish. That was too heartwarming to leave out.

We’re 9 months in now, and think of how many people have become motivated to be the helpers. Look at how many healthcare professionals are working longer hours, how many teachers are working through an online and in-person curriculum, how many people went out to protest the death of George Floyd, how many people registered to vote this year. Most importantly, think of all of the people who are being helpers by simply staying at home, doing their part to stop the spread. I’ve been a history buff all my life, and I’ve said with hesitation that this generation needed some sort of large scale struggle so that we can come together. The Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, both World Wars, and Vietnam all define the generations of youth that endured. Today’s youth have chosen to be isolated in a way through technology, but this mandated distance has made people long for what they did not earlier appreciate. I feel that we have already come together as humanity despite being unable to be physical close, and once life looks more like normal, we will all be closer.

The one minister that I can honestly say I wouldn't mind hearing preach to me. He stands ALONE in that regard, and this man played a big part in my development watching him as child.

No we don't. We need to grow up and to accept that bad things sometimes happen, make the best of it and get on with life, learning from our mistakes. We need to learn to not be "professional victims" (boo hoo.. poor me!).... we need to be adults and deal with things... we need to teach our children that old adage "if you fall off the horse, get BACK ON the horse"!............ the pathetic amongst us moan and cry about how dark it is.. the non-pathetic look for the light switch....for God's sake people, man up!

@@TheRealist2022 The positivity and hopefulness that Mr. Rogers embodied and projected didn't exist to pacify pussies... it was just, good. Goodness and cynical realness can be in the same room together. Life sucks, and then you die. But, in the meantime, some Mr. Rogers'ness never hurt anyone. Being naively hopeful is a sucker's bet. But being passionately negative about every subject that touches your table, is a waste of energy. Life is a buffet, sample it all first..then go back for more of the things you like, and bypass the things you didn't. Don't kid yourself thinking anyone cares if you choose to be internally miserable. You're in charge of your own good time.

He was such a symbol of love without judgment. Love without hate. Love without barriers. I miss this man. We need someone like him in our world. Mr Rogers is greatly missed.

Fred, you were and still are a huge inspiration in this world for me, I took your lessons from my childhood all through my adulthood. Because of you I realized what I wanted to do and be in my life and that's a helper. I get such a sense of joy from helping people/animals that it cannot be replicated with anything I do and it's because of you that I realized this and I'm forever grateful. You were always a standard that I set for myself to strive to be, I lost my way along that path many times but I'll never forgot the calm level headed man asking me if he could be my neighbor. The answer was always yes, you've touched so many lives and created generations of people who will be spreading your message of good will for years to come. R.I.P Fred McFeely Rogers, heaven has no idea how lucky they are to have you and we love and miss you. It's a beautiful day in this neighborhood a beautiful day for a neighbor would you be mine? I've had this in my mind in the wake of all the Tornado damage that has befallen Mississippi. I've had my hope and faith restored time and time again by the selfless nature of the tens of thousands of helpers who have came to the aid of their neighbors.

Saw this today... I was 10 when 9/11 happened. I saw all the helpers, and I saw the hope ❤️

It's been true since the dawn of humanity, the more people working together, the more survival goes up exponentially. We didn't get this far on our own, and when I think of our species, I see a global community, which is why Mr. Rogers always asked, "Won't you be my neighbor?"

Today was my last day of middle school. I can easily say with no doubt that the last three years of my life have been the worst ever. I want my high school career to be the best 4 years of my life. my art teacher attached this video to a note that he put on classroom and it just motivated me to become a better person.

I saw this video in 2020 as a high school junior. I felt lost, and like I didn't have anything to contribute. And I was worried about younger kids. If I was having a hard time with lockdown, imagine them! When I saw this, it inspired me to start an online creative writing class for elementary schoolers. It was wonderful for them, but also for me. Thank you Mr. Rogers ❤

I was never really close to Mr. Rogers let alone ever watched his show only hearing about him recently but he behaved almost like a goddamn saint and was near perfect in terms of lifestyle
