It's not about fear! It's about trust. If you are training in any form of self-defense if you can't trust the person "teaching you" go to another dojo!! If you are unsure of the validity of what you may or may not have learned you when you come across a threatening person and have to use that training. You have to understand what you're doing and why! Also if you're afraid of getting hit, get over it. If you can't take a punch take up ribbon dancing with your daughter! I'm not putting you down! I just don't want you to get in over your head and get hurt! God Bless!!

I like Fred's approach. Kali and silat are beautiful systems. They are very fast like a porche or a ferrari. But they also break down mechanically very easily and will not function. You need a more efficient vehicle for basic self defense. Try lethwei, muay thai, or American boxing.

I understand people criticized him during his MMA fight. I used to question it myself but looking at his teachings on Silat and how realistic he is about combat. Seems to me he has mastered his experience and learned from the physical reality

Trollstation Teaching most women self defense through martial arts is basically a waste of time. They dont posses the upper body strength , and are to limp wristed, unless they work out a lot, or are trapeze artists or something, . But you are giving them a false sense of security, by teaching them this staged stuff, and then the real world hits them in the ass. Women have 3 defenses to rely on. One is the eye gouge, and run like hell, 2 is the knee in the nuts, and again running. 3 is the best, screaming at the top of their lungs, and if possible incorporating one of the other 2 at the same time.
