Niles was a lot funnier before the writers gave him love interests. After that, the writers weren't writing for David Hyde Pierce's natural exquisite comedic abilities. They were writing for the producers. The character of Niles got loused up because none of the many writers they brought in over the years had sense enough to know Hyde-Pierce was awkward when put in romantic heterosexual situations. David never had believable on-screen chemistry with any of the girlfriends they gave Niles. If they'd have left all of his girlfriends invisible like they did with Maris, the continuity of character would have spanned the entire series. Niles was so much more lovable as an OCD married bachelor.

That's actually why DHP got the role. Originally Frasier was supposed to be an only child but DHP looked so much like a younger Kelsey Grammer that they wrote the part of Niles specifically for him. They even make a note of this in the episode where Sam, from Cheers, shows up. He looks at Niles and says, "he looks just like you before you started spending so much time at the bar. What happened to you?"

I cannot believe the consistent quality of writing and acting on this show

To be fair, Niles trolling Frasier is like half his character throughout the whole series (and it's brilliant every time).

Oy Vey I’m plotzing 🤣 Marty’s walking in kvetching and nails the Jewish Parent spot on. As a Jew that was hysterical 🤣. Niles and his Jewish expressions were hilarious 😂. “The moil” “ I just wanted to show him that there weren’t any hard feelings” cracked me up. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve said that was an evening with my family. 🤣

My favourite line is, “you mean Papa?” I’m gay, a situation my mother (of blessed memory) was never comfortable with. However, whenever I told her I was dating a new guy, her first question was always…. “Is it too much to ask wether or not he’s a good Jewish boy?” The time I told her I was dating a black Jewish lawyer she said, “Oy-vey! I suppose I should be happy. At least he’s Jewish. I don’t want to sound prejudiced, but do you really HAVE to date…. a lawyer(!)”

My jewish mother saw this and couldn't control her laughter. She loves this episode. Especially the bit about improvising the Jewish wine. She says it really is dreadful (far too sweet).

Back when this episode first aired I worked with an older Jewish man. He said the whole episode had him in fits of laughter, but it was that bit with the wine that had him almost falling off the sofa. He absolutely agreed. 😄

Watched this episode so many times, but just noticed Niles saying "oy" when he points out the wine being unsuitable. Love it.

Fay: The one who did your circumcision? Frasier: Yes! Yes, i just wanted to show him that there were no hard feelings... 😂😂😂 Frasier's facial expression of dread once he said that line is priceless 😂😂😂

last year I had a Jewish client coming from NYC to HK and I did what Niles had done, and the client exploded with laughter.

I watched this episode again yesterday and it is one of the best-written Frasier episodes I've seen. The reveal of Niles dressed as Christ in front of a Christmas tree with an allergy spray up his nose in the bathroom is hilarious.

"I have no idea....do I?" Best!

This show never gets old. The end of this episode when Niles is dressed as Jesus and then when they come clean, the argument, the tears...

Frasier - Best darn ensemble group ever in the history of television and they all seemed like they were friends. When I had a fever a few years ago, I simply binged on Frazier episodes via Netflix and soon I felt better.

@@levips9798 I know the media and government have done a number on people, but COVID-19 is nothing to be scared of for most people. It's simple fact that most people recover within 2 weeks. You can confirm that for yourself. Stress actually affects your immune system, so just be chilled

My favorite part is when the father said, "Do I?" It sounded improvised. Also, Niles is so hilariously deadpan here.

This was far and away one of the most hilarious episodes in the series, and that's saying a lot considering how funny the show always was.

Kosher wine is not "cheap and sugary." Manishevitz was inexpenisve and sugary. Long history to that and believe it or not many, not just Jewish people, drank it. Kosher wines comes in all varieties, made in many parts of the world and some are quite expensive.

That was back when Chantal Cookware was popular, I used to have the same set, same color, easy to keep clean.

This show was just one of the best. Years later and it still feels fresh and it's still funny as hell.

Niles is so good at playing up to anything that comes up, like pretending to be Marty's boyfriend or being Jewish

Marty is a natural Jew. 😂

I think Niles is the funniest character on the show and that's saying a lot because they're all very funny.

"LeChaim" means Cheers, to good Life "Mazal Tov" means Congratulations, a blessing for good fortune "Next Year in Jerusalem" evokes a common theme in Jewish culture of a desire to return to a rebuilt Jerusalem, and commentators have suggested that it serves as a reminder of the experience of living in exile. Usually said during Passover.

I miss that show so much, so well written, it never gets old. Thank you to all of you that post the videos.

I can't even explain how much I HOLLERED the first time I saw this episode - most notably when Niles emerged out of Frasier's kitchen in his "holiday program costume"! I could not catch my breath, had to walk it off, and I missed the resolution of the show! 😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂

Wayne Neill Australia hasn’t existed as long as we’ve been saying “next year in Jerusalem.” Unless you’re under the impression Australia has been around since the 1400’s?
