Franklin, Pennsylvania | What Happened?

Franklin is a Rust Belt City located in Venango County, Pennsylvania. It was once home to major oil productions and manufacturing, but has been on the decline since the collapse of the industrial era. The population is currently sitting around 6,000 people and has been declining since the height of population at 10,254 back in the 1930's. Crime is average, houses are reasonably priced, good jobs hard to come by. There's many abandoned buildings and homes as you would expect, however many beautiful areas as well. Filmed a few months back. Let's take a drive and check some places out!

As you show all these towns around the country I would have loved to live there.Beautiful homes etc. Unfortunately we made a huge mistake not keeping our manufacturers in this country. The rich may have money but without the workers their will be less goods to buy. I loved my factory job but they left. Now people like me are old sick and dying off. I just don't see the hard work you have to put in to raise your family.

I've been there! In 1984, we drove up the hills to an old logging trail that took us to a river where we camped. The sandstone hills were beautiful and scary, as there were few guardrails. It sure seemed like a nice little town that glowed in the evening

The downtown is impressive and stands in stark contrast to the initial neighbourhoods that you rode through. That church is beautiful! When the KFC can't make it, that is sad. Thanks for sharing. ❤

My grandparents lived on the 900 block of Elk Street back in the 30s - 50s where my father was raised, before moving to Grove City. Back in the late 1800s my great-grandparents owned about 1000 acres around Franklin and had about 400 oil wells. My great-grandfather held a patent back then for a pulling machine. Great family history and proud to be a part of that lineage.

A town of contrasts. The downtown is beautiful, very nice, while nearby neighborhoods are crumbling and the commercial strip out on the highway is on its last legs ☹️

What happened to Franklin is that two famous oil companies Quaker state and penzoil that was founded there got bought out threw mergers. Shell petroleum of Texas closed the refineries and capped oil pump production... Shell moved everything to Texas and purchased the brand names only...

This town doesn't look so bad, but I can see how pretty it must've been in it's day, and I bet it looks pretty in the summer. Downtown is cool with all the different colored buildings. I hope that old school/church is being renovated? Hopefully that big old brick building too? Thank you as always for the video. ps - it seems a lot of PA towns are built right on the sides of hills.

I'm from Franklin. I got out, but my sister stayed. She has worked at UMPC. For almost 30 years, and makes a little above minimum wage. She can barely keep a roof over her head. Gas and food are expensive. Gas is more expensive than it is up here in Connecticut. I do like to go back to visit. In this summer, it's very beautiful.

Never heard of Franklin or Venango County. Is it near Oil City? Doesn't' look too bad. Maybe the buildings that are shot ought to simply be demolished and leave what's still OK in place. 6000 is still a lot of people. Komatsu has a huge facility. Is that where the jobs are? Interesting place. Probably looks a lot nicer in Summer.

My father is buried in Franklin. His family grew up on a farm in Cherry Hill and moved to Franklin and my grandfather opened up a candy store .. way back in the 1930's 40's .. My fathers sister was a nurse at the hospital there , where my grandmother and father both died , 2 days apart from each other. So sad that the industry left and people needed to have employment .

You didn't film the big fancy really expensive homes on the River road in Franklin Highs or the mansions in Miller Park. There is still money in the area but only a select handful have it. Most of us can barely afford the taxes and insurance and still put food on our table.
