Lyrics
Some mornings I pray for evening
For the day to be done
And some summer days I hide away
And wait for rain to come
‘Cause it turns out hell will not be found
Within the fires below
But in making do and muddling through
When you've nowhere else to go
But then I remember you
And the way you shine like truth in all you do
And if you remembered me
You could save me from the way I tend to be
The way I tend to be
Some days I wake up dazed, my dear
And don't know where I am
I've been running now so long I'm scared
I've forgotten how to stand
And I stand alone in airport bars
And gather thoughts to think
That if all I had was one long road
It could drive a man to drink
But then I remember you
And the way you shine like truth in all you do
And if you remembered me
You could save me from the way I tend to be
The way I tend to be
‘Cause I've said, "I love you," so many times
That the words kind of died in my mouth
And I meant it each time with each beautiful woman
But somehow it never works out
But you stood apart in my calloused heart
And you taught me and here's what I learned
That love is about all the changes you make
And not just three small words
And then I catch myself
Catching your scent on someone else
In a crowded space
And it takes me somewhere I cannot quite place
But then I remember you
And the way you shine like truth in all you do
And if you remembered me
You could save me from the way I tend to be
The way I tend to be

"Love is about all the changes we make; and not just 3 small words." Never has a more intelligent sentence been written.
Driving to work this morning, it was freezing cold, raining, a miserable day. Then this song came on the radio. I'd never heard it before. But soon enough I couldn't stop smiling. I had this overwhelming feeling that everything will be alright.
My (now) husband showed me Frank Turner a few years back. I really needed his music when I heard it. I was in a dark place and this music saved me. At the time, my husband and I were best friends, nothing romantic. Now, our son is almost 1 year old and I couldn't be happier

7 Years later and I still can't sing the prechorus without crying. This song has stood the test of time.
Had a breakdown of sorts a few years ago (cliche I know) but Frank's music helped me through. Haven't listened as much recently but coming back to it, glad it was there for me when times got tough.
I have 11,362 songs on my iPod. This is my favourite out of all of all of them.

hard and beautiful
For those asking for the meaning of the video, it is a metaphorical take on the song itself. The singer tends to be depressed and hopeless, shown here by him digging himself a grave. But no matter how many graves he digs, he always climbs out of it and walks away from giving up life because of the memory of his ex. It's a beautifully poignant video, and it really brings out the emotions of the song (and a tear in your eye). :D

I had heard Frank way back when he first started. I didn't know his name or really anything about him at all. Years later at the last Warp Tour he was there and it instantly connected. His music brings me so much joy and helped me get through so much mental illness. Covering his music even got me a start in my own musical career. I hope that one day I can shake his hand and thank him properly. Until then, thank you and peace brother. ✌🏻
Listened to the song countless times for the first time Watched the video Frank Turner it was beautifully crafted
This is by far the best FT video aesthetically and message wise. He literally needs to dig himself out of the ditch he is in and no one's words can reach him. It's just stellar

Fires below
Frank Turner is simply amazing! Doesn't matter how many times I hear this song, I tear up.. Very moving song... One day I hope to see him perform ...
Frank and his backing band, The Sleeping Souls, are a bunch of musical geniuses. I cannot wait until November when I'm seeing them live.
I still can't listen to this song without feeling the bittersweetness of what I recognised as being a touch of depression last year, can't exactly say I had it but negative thoughts came out of nowhere(even though I have been blessed with awesome friends and family) and it striked me whilst I was stressing over university work, the combination sent me crazy, I didn't wanna get out of bed cos of the 10,000 thoughts going through my mind. But there was one person who I kept remembering...and every single lyric in this song is identical to how I felt...even the "I stand alone in airport bars and gather thoughts to think.." .. forever my favourite song!
Happy 11th anniversary to this song! Also, this is the first time I see this singer with a passionate talent! 💖
Love this song far too much. Never ceases to amaze me!
Nothing is perfect, but this is as close as it gets! Thank you, Frank.

Frank Tuner is a genius. “Love is about all the changes you make and not just three small words” stuck to me like glue. Holy. effing. feels. The message, in my opinion, is to reminisce on the past as you embrace the mistakes you've made. My favorite feeling when I listen: Do not be afraid to look back and cherish your innocence. We’ll never get it back, and this jam made me sit back and just yearn for the past- the part which made me. Honestly... what songs today make you feel this way? Don't be dicks, I just happened to hear this song when I needed it most. If you contest me, then you lack feelings entirely.

Banger... Frank Turner kills it.... Seen him few times .... And Extras ..... Love him
So, this is kind of just conjecture, but here's my understanding of the video. The reason Frank is wearing the 'the end is coming' sandwich board, is literally symbolic of the feeling at the end of a relationship, where it all feels inevitable, that it's coming to an end. That's all rather straight forward. My favourite part of the video though, has to be the hole digging. I think this is literally him 'digging himself a hole', or getting himself into a bad situation after a relationship, emotionally. He often refers to drinking in his songs, so lets say that after a relationship, Frank gets a little boozy and depressed. The wonderful metaphor is the girl at the end. He spots her, and it literally and metaphorically brings him out of his hole, making him feel better, and giving him the impetus to move on. Zooming out on the several holes just shows that this is a repeated process, and something Frank is all too familiar with. Read this and think it's bullshit, or agree, it's all just art, so is completely subjective, this is just my understanding!

joshrich43 when i tried telling someone this was one of the most beautiful videos i'd ever seen, they didn't get it, and i didn't bother explaining my interpretation. had i done so, i'd have said what you just said, word for word. this song and video are so personal to me and the things i've done and experienced, it was just too heavy to try and get someone else to understand.

joshrich43 sorry for the triple reply, but i do disagree with one thing though, he doesn't really see the girl, or even stop for her, he just climbs out and walks away. i think he finally stopped and thought "what am i doing? why am i doing this to myself?" and finally stopped digging, finally recovering from the heartbreak that lead to his cycle of self-destruction, or in the video, hole digging.
@ciorstanmacgregor6897

joshrich43 I think slightly differnt, shes is always behind him, and he looks through her, so although it is her that helps him move on, its the memory of her and the relationship that he knows that he fucked up. "i remember you and the way you shine like truth" so the end is coming, the end of him ruining his relationships for stupid reasons, like after all those holes, all those fuck ups, he has finally learned from what she told him all those ruined relationships ago. He tends to sabotage relationships but finally knows that he wants to wake up with familiarity, he doesnt want to be always on the road anymore. He is ready now to finally to take on a real relationship and to truly love, to make the changes for someone he never could for the girl in the video which is why he walks past her, kind of think it is a "right one at the wrong time" kind of situation here

gumby the don: I agree. For me I sing this song and it touches my heart and makes me think of God like most love songs do. How much I love Him and all that. I sing this to Him..."but then I remember You and the way You shine like truth in all You do and if You remembered me You could save me from the way I tend to be" It puts me in a sentimental place where I cry out to God "and then I catch myself catching Your scent on someone else in a crowded space and it takes me somewhere I cannot quite place" 👑❤️😍

"And then I catch myself, catching your scent on someone else." I went to a Flogging Molly concert last week that he opened for, and told us a story about that line. He loves koalas, so when he got to met one while in Australia he was super psyched. But he had just split with a girl he really loved, who used eucalyptus leaf shampoo. I so had it pegged, I thought with lyrics like "save me from the way I tend to be" and "I remember you"..... so I looked up the lyrics I could remember to confirm my suspicion, thought it was gonna be Daughtry or something I dont know the name of, but apparently this guy just sounds like that music. Upon the first listen, this was the song that from its first bars made me say it was well worth waiting 3 weeks to get the album: the first shipment got lost in the mail (I'm from Italy). I just love the way Frank can always find the right way to express what you feel and cannot put into words.
