Prior to 2008, I used to think of Frank Lampard as a one-dimensional goalscorer, but after watching him a lot during Chelsea's 08/09 season I began to appreciate his intelligence, creative mind and passing. Lampard was never a particularly talented youngster but through sheer hard work he has managed to mould himself into one of England's most cultured midfielders of the last 20 years, helping drive Chelsea to several domestic triumphs in the Abramovic era.
In 2008/2009, he recorded 20 goals and 19 assists in all competitions, while creating more goalscoring chances than any other player in the Premier League (131). He was unlucky that some of his brilliant passes weren't converted by the rather wasteful pair of Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka, otherwise he'd have assisted a few more goals. For me he was the 2nd best midfielder in Europe that season behind Xavi, and deserved more recognition. He wasn't even nominated for the PFA Player of the Year awards, which is a shame because he was probably the best player in England.

Woefully underrated by the press because he wears the wrong colour shirt. Woefully misused by a succession of England managers in favour of the flashier and more generally popular but frankly less effective Gerrard. In the current transfer market, Frank Lampard circa 2005-2008 would surely be £50m+ player. Quite possibly the greatest Chelsea player there has been.
with xavi and iniesta playing amazing football it was easy for me to forget how instrumental and brilliant frank lampard was for chelsea

Because Lol Liga fans never watched or rated football outside spain during those times and their heirs the kids of these days never heard of him and think Xavi and Iniesta were the only good midfielders in the last couple of decades. Its mostly them fan kids of RM and Barcelona that downgrade EPL greats

this guy is thevmost efficient mid in his gen. only shortcoming is he needs to be paired with a good holding mid so thatvhe can roam.box to box. if england had a makelele rheyvwould win the wc no doubt

Funny thing is England had a few players that can play makelele part but England would rather bring Scholes and beckham when they already have Lampard and Gerrard. Seriously terrible management of the team that crumble to media pressure and brought popular players instead of bringing players that fit with each other.

134 key passes this season. The closest second in the world during that year was Xavi with only 124 key passes. It's such baffling how EPL fans rates gerrard and scholes over Lampard when Lampard are just way better at every single metric available.
And don't forger that he has an excelent free kick tehnique

He couldn't dictate a midfield to save his life. You'll notice he is always toothless against the top sides in Europe and on the international stage.

@DaGunnersRvP thats absolutely false .I think so u hav forgotten the 2008 Champions League Final against ManU and 2009 Champions League semi final against Liverpool. In Bpl last year itself he provided the assist agsinst Manu. In important matches he shiofts to more deeper roles so as to stop them from scoring .
Gerrard was better this season, but Lampard was ridiculous the season after.
