I was nine years old when I worked, along with my mother and seven year old sister, as a Supernumerary during the 1970 Metropolitan Opera House performances of Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci (featuring Richard Tucker). I played an altar boy, my sister was a communion girl and my mother was a villager. We were onstage during and after the magnificent Easter Hymn procession into the church. Even as a young boy I remember at the time reading about Grace Bumbry playing Santuzza and the objections to a black woman portraying an Italian. The Fall 1969 Met season was delayed to January 1970 by labor strife. I distinctly remember the controlled chaos in the wings as the Cavalleria Easter procession was organized and lined up. Bernstein was at the podium producing the elegant Mascagni score while cursing and smoking stagehands, their Penthouse centerfolds plastered on the walls, made sure dozens of supers had their props while a nervous live horse left mounds of crap on the floor.

RIP, dear Grace. You were wonderful! I doubt we shall ever hear your like again.

There is a clip of her speaking with German journalists in German and these journalists showed surprise and delight with how well she spoke their language. 😊😊

Grace Bumbry e Franco Corelli, il massimo dei massimi.

Exquisite voices. Bumbry had a developed voice with well integrated chestvoice, velvety colour and great range.

OMG! I wish I had been old enough to hear these pillars of the old school in their prime performing live.

One of the four times I saw Corelli live. Glorious beyond words.

Sempre grande corelli. Non ci sono più aggettivi per questo tenore. Mai sguaiato ma attento in ogni frase, dizione e fraseggio perfetti. Volume senza paragone una fortuna possedere queste registrazioni che rendono il giusto tributo ad uno dei più grandi turiddu di sempre. Rmautino da san mauro torinese in casa di riposo.

Dear Roberta,I am an admirer of Franco since 1950/1,as a young man in Rome I first heard the voice of this Star,and have enjoyed his voice,I think that he is one of the greatest post War opera voices,he thrills me the most,this does not mean that others are excluded in my opinion,Chaque in a son gout,unfortunately nowadays the singers are manupilated by promoters and others,in my opinion they try to many roles some which do not suit their type of voice & projection.But thank you for all your research in bringing these videos.Rene ( 88 yrs )

Wish I had been there to see these two in action! Franco really portrays that scoundrel Turiddo to perfection. And Bumbry is totally believable and has the perfect voice. Wonderful! I wonder if Franco enjoyed being such a villain???

I heard these two in the Verdi Requiem. Hottest Ingemisco. Approaching that arching phrase he folded the score, put in under him arm, and poured out that phrase.

Corelli and Bumbry are superb in Cav, directed by Lenny B no less. Put's 'interpretations' by today's miked, auto-tuned, glammed up opera singers to shame!

To sing with Corelli, you need to have a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE voice, or his voice KILLS the other. Bumbry have a HUGE voice in her days. That's the prove... Hehehehehe'

Bravi Bumbry e Corelli ma il "miracolo" e' Bernstein, si mette sotto i piedi Karajan.

True that the anatema sounds frankly ridiculous. Not realistic. Otherwise, very thrilling rendition of the duet, with a Corelli as regal as ever.

Corelli said she was the most feminine singer he ever sang with. There is some speculation of a love affaire.

Pretty weak & unconvincing "mala pasqua", otherwise fine duet. Franco was & is a god among tenors!!

The curse sounds like it was said by someone else other than Bumbry. Does not sound like her at all and she had a very recognizable voice. I could be wrong of course but doubt it.
