Très belle interprétation de cette merveilleuse sonate qui met si bien mise en valeur les possibilités de l'instrument. Et le chant de Poulenc, entre tendresse humour, nostalgie et virtuosité, qui lui est si personnel ! Bravo et Merci !

Technisch fehlerlose und hoch kultivierte Aufführung dieser einzigartigen Sonate im veränderlichen Tempo mit bezauberndem Ton der Klarinette und glänzendem Klang des Klaviers. Die intime und perfekt entsprechende Mitwirkung zwischen den beiden Virtuosen ist echt bewundernswert. Einfach wunderschön!
C'est tout simplement remarquable: un seul geste pour deux interprètes. Le son de Joë Christophe montre à quel niveau il se situe dans son art: très haut. L'esprit gaiement désespéré de Poulenc est parfaitement exprimé. J'espère qu'il y a des responsables de label qui se sont débouché les oreilles pour signer Christophe !

My guess is that he had the pianist hold the sustain pedal whilst he played, then when he played in the piano the strings for the first 4 notes rang in sympathetic resonance so he got a subtle sustain sound. This is the same reason you occasionally see harpists mute their strings in performances after a loud blast followed by sudden silence, even if they were not playing - the harp strings will resonate after the orchestra suddenly stop and you'll hear a 'ghostly' chord.

parce que pour pouvoir jouer pleinement d'un instrument à vent, et se donner toutes les possibilités d'interprétation, il faut déployer toute son énergie, d'autant plus quand on contrôle la musique avec son souffle!

They don't always, but it is certainly happening much more often now than in past years. The "squat" for every entrance or accent is quite annoying.
Should've played it from memory. Missed opportunity.
