francis chan/Think Hard, Stay Humble: The Life of the Mind and the Peril of Pride

The following are notes taken during the session.
1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Now concerning food offered to idols: we know that "all of us possess knowledge." This "knowledge" puffs up, but love builds up. If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know. But if anyone loves God, he is known by God.
This passage convicted me about how often I will speak without loving the person that is right in front of me. I have prayed that God would help me to look someone in the eyes when I'm talking to them and really care. I have seven questions I ask myself before I speak because it's so easy for me to be distracted and to be nervous about speaking. One of the questions is, "Am I worried about what people will think of my message, or what God thinks?" Another is, "Do I genuinely love these people?"
This passage is addressing people that technically have the right theology but were still wrong before God because of their lack of love. Paul talks about food that is offered to idols. A lot of Corinthians had come out of a pagan background where they worshiped idols. Some of the more mature Christians understood that idols were nothing and that it was okay to eat meat that had been sacrificed to them. Some weaker Christians, however, had problems with it.
The mature Christians were pressuring the weaker Christians to eat the meat, and Paul responds to the mature Christians by saying, "You weren't thinking about your brother. He didn't feel right in his conscience about eating the meat, and yet you pushed him to eat." Paul asked, "Why would you do that? If I knew that I could hurt my brother by eating meat, I would never eat meat again."
I admire Paul so much for the way he feels toward people. In Romans 9:3 he writes, "For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brothers, my kinsmen according to the flesh." Do you feel that way about the people in your life? Paul's life showed that he really meant what he said.
Some of you in this room think really hard through the Scriptures. My challenge to you is, How hard do you think about people? About the lost? When was the last time you wept for the lost?
It's so easy to seclude ourselves from the world of lost people. We step out of it for a season to think hard about the Scriptures and keep going on in school to learn more, and we eventually get to the point where we realize that we don't love the lost like we should. The point isn't that we shouldn't pursue learning, but we ought to be able to do both, to love people and know the Bible better.
John MacArthur wrote years ago, "Knowledge is essential, but it's not sufficient." Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 13:2, "And if I have prophetic powers, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have all faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing."
Some of you could be brilliant and worthless. You could be like a great basketball player that never misses a shot but always shoots at the other team's basket. He's a great shooter, but he's killing the team.
Why did God gift you the way that he did? It's for us, not for you. We should constantly be thinking, How can I build up other people?
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 8:2, "If anyone imagines that he knows something, he does not yet know as he ought to know." If you really knew, you would know better and you would use your knowledge to love. There is a danger in puffing yourself up and imagining yourself to be some brilliant person.
Paul then says, "But if anyone loves God, he is known by God" (1 Corinthians 8:3). It's not just about information. When you love God, you don't just know a lot of facts about him. You love him. There's a relationship and he knows you.
One of my favorite verses is Galatians 4:9, "But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God..." It amazes me that Paul changes his expression like that. The creator of the universe knows me! I actually talk to God and he answers me!
Do you want to brag about something? Brag about the fact that God knows you. Don't boast about how much you know. Boast about the fact that the God of the universe calls you by name.
Some of you have been studying Christ for years. But does your life look anything like his? Can you say like Paul, "Imitate me as I imitate Christ?" Do you look like Jesus? Do you love like Jesus?

I am convicted. I've let myself get full of myself because God made me smart and gave me a love for learning. I talk about myself because I'm different from those around me and don't know how to talk to them. If anyone reads this please pray that God would carry this conviction through tomorrow so I can bring it to the youth group I lead, and I can love them better.

A Toby Mac song says " blind to the arrow that was headed to my heart, but you hit the mark!". This man relays messaged from God straight to us. People have been telling me to listen to him for about 2 years and I'm bad about not wanting to watch " over rated things' I should have listened. I listen to one sermon every morning after my Bible time. He makes me want to know God more.

I am so convicted after hearing this. I have tried so hard to better myself and I have not thought about anyone else. I must be the most ignorant person on the planet. Please pray for me. I'm so sorry God that I have put my own needs and wants above everyone elses. I'm going to try everyday to come up with at least one way that I can help someone else. even if it's just a phone call to encourage someone else. I feel so selfish after this teaching. I want to apologize right now to everyone on here for any negative remark that I have made about your comments or anything that I may have said that offended you instead of sending out respect and love. Please forgive me and God bless all of you.

MT Cajun - your heart is so lovely. Don't be too hard on yourself. Satan would love that. Getting us to focus on worldly sorrow (self-doubt, self-loathing). I struggle with these too, I think most humans do. We're either too arrogant or too self-deprecating. I'm learning to Allow myself, so allow yourself to accept the 'grace' God offers. Jesus died so we could be set free from sin's alluring temptations. God and Jesus know we are imperfect, they don't expect perfection. All they ask for is, repentance, faith and obedience. We are the luckiest people in the world to have the spirit of the Living God inside of us. Take heart, Jesus said, "I will never leave you or forsake you." He died so we can be forgiven. So, you are forgiven. 😉

just do it for them and not for yourself to feel like your doing the good thing. the key is to be for others, to esteem them better than yourself. Every person has a unique way to express the Lord so in that way they are better than you are. Just like in that way you are better than me, so i am honored to meet anyone else. Everything i do i purpose to do it for their faith to be built for themself, not for me. So that their life can be better. I do Tile and Stone and when i hire someone on i let them know i am training them to go on their own. I have helped several men become good contactors, when they leave i suffer from not have the help....but their life is made better. My Time and Money is His and He askes for it all the time. Praise Him who does good things amoungst us...His life in us lays it down so well Blessings to you and yours in Jesus, the freedom we have when free in Him is awesome

One of my prayers is to "live holy, love mercy and to walk humbly with ..God" This sermon brought home even more just how much I need to "walk humbly" with God. How is it that we can be so dumb and still think too highly of ourselves? Why have we bought into the lie about we need to love ourselves. It seems that we all do that way too much as it is. I am grieved that I have not been loving others around me. I grieve for the persecuted, pray for them, and send support for them, but I have not loved others as Christ loves them. May God forgive me, and grant me the love, real love, for others.

Pray for me please. Im such an idiot, because i believe that i know much about the word, even more than others in my place, but i lack a love and i just stopped to care actually and i dont want that. I want to get back to love, that would be actual wisdom. I love god and i have asked him for wisdom but then i got some wisdom but im using it to gain an indentity, which is stupid, im a child of god, not a wise christian. Im prideful, im sick, im not using the wisdom i ever got for the right things. Like the corinthians, even though i dont use it to hurt people too. But i use it to gain an identity. And i lack loving them. Please pray. Thank you so much. You could also write under this comment something you want to be prayed for and i will pray for it. Have a geat day!

Thank you so much for the insight. I have much recovered from the state i was at when i wrote that. Now im having more of a problem with the vomit. I still really like to eat some of it and i really should stop i guess, but i dont really care or something, i dont know. But i think its more important to rather seek god than seeking to stop stuff. I will automatically stop stuff when i seek god, i believe. OR i will be really convicted in my heart and stop because of that. But for the moment seeking god is more important. I want to know him more and i want to make him known more. By the way, im in decipleship (even though that decreased a bit) with a really really godly man, he prays like 5 hours a day and he starts a church near my place right now. Man i love this dude for being such a great picture of jesus. Again thank you for helping me :)

+MrSerberker wach James 3:13 Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. wise people are totally depend on God Spirit to do everything that included what to do with what knowledge they have received. Try to meditate on what you have that you haven't received from God ...which is "nothing" really that will humble you. Repent of this pride God opposes it. the Pharisees knew a lot but didn't have the Love of God. you receive the Love of God by faith ask for it.

As I read some of these messages that are negative, I am saddened. What kind of message are we leaving for unbelievers who see these? Are we lifting up or tearing down? If we would just take a moment to pray and ask God before replying, some of these replys wouldn't be here. I am reminded of Titus 3.

I couldn't help but it's not enough on the quote you gave me the guy saying "he didn't understand why people would sacrifice themselves there's someone they don't know." To make this as anti-self righteous as possible, I would simply say we are not sacrificing ourselves at all. It makes us feel good because we were chosen and made slaves to Jesus Christ. But you're not sacrificing ourselves but fulfilling ourselves.

A person has to be drawn by the Spirit of God in order to be saved. It's God that does the saving. Our involvement is repenting and receiving. God does the spiritual work. See John 6:44.

Gospel of salvation of our souls: 💜💕💜💖💞💜💕For what I received I passed on to you as of [first importance]: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers and sisters at the same time,

I really appreciate what he said about teaching but his focus on material help bothers me when I think of John Piper's messages or a book like Revolution In World Missions that really show our focus shouldn't be on people's material needs but only see that area of service as one of the means to get them to meet Jesus. The book is by an Indian evangelist and he said that he found out that hungry people could listen to the gospel even if you couldn't feed them. He'sz the founder of Gospel For Asia.

🙏“Heavenly Father, I know that I have broken your laws and my sins have separated me from you. I am truly sorry, and now I want to turn away from my past sinful life toward you. Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again. I believe that your son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer. I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Please send your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen
