It was an awesome trip, Lindsay!! I am so glad you decided to do it! It was a huge bucket list item for me both in terms of traveling overseas and meeting/working with you! The sketchbook was a great first activity. Our group meshed together incredibly well and we all had a fantastic time. Nickolai told me that he and Sophie like to consider their guests as family, and they really do show it!

You said the magic words! “I think I’ll do it again!” So great to hear you reminisce about the Best Week Ever! I think I finally feel rested this morning. Every minute of the workshop was magical. What was meant to be only a week excursion left us with unforgettable memories and best friends from all over the world. Merci beaucoup for making it happen!

When we went to the restaurant in Albi, I loved the fact that the price on the menu was exactly what I paid at the end - no taxes added later, no special fees, etc. I wish we did that here! 🙂 The food was delicious and the restaurant staff was wonderful.

Yes, it makes splitting the bill so much easier and you know the staff is making a living wage. And the food is better and costs the same as in the USA. I think we have a lot of corporate greed here.

I love how you’ve named The Want Monster and The Room of Hoard. Those simple phrases have helped keep me from over-buying. My home is small and I only have room for a Corner of Hoard and it’s already filled with enough art supplies for several years lol. I’ve started leaving things in my Amazon cart for 24-48 hours and seeing if I still want it as much then. Usually I end up removing it because I already have more supplies than I have time to use!

@thefrugalcrafter no I totally agree. I am a substitute teacher on a limited budget so I look for quality as well as how far my dollar can stretch. Glad some are thinking about that kind of thing when developing products rather than "what's in" right now and trying to tide the wave of fads and trends.
My papa before he passed away on 4 March. This year had been doing Duolingo in multiple languages for 2977 days, so almost 8 years without one day break, and in that time heat also died and been revived and had a pacemaker put in, and he still hadn’t missed a day. My papa was an academic and spoke fluently in several languages, and when I say several, I mean more than 10 and then he could get by in probably another 10 minutes. Very proud of him. He was a wonderful man and a wonderful father, a pretty incredible streak. He always talked about the owl to go as something to beat

I'm so excited to hear all about this "Franc-tastic" trip!😆 On the room pairings working out: that is fortunate. Over 20 years ago, the church choir I was in went to England and sang in some of the cathedrals there. It was a truly wonderful experience. My only problem was that I was paired with another choir member who I truly liked...a very sweet lady...but she snored a LOT. I did tell her about it...she apologized...even went out & bought some antihistamine.... said to wake her up when she did it and she would change positions, etc. That would work for like 10 min max..just when I was drifting off, she'd start up again. I couldn't be mad...it wasn't her fault. So I did sleep some, but not near as much as I would have sans snoring. The last night, I slept in the bathtub 🛀 with the door closed. It really wasn't that bad. I could still hear her, but it was muffled enough that it didn't bother me. I can't say it ruined the trip...it didn't, but feeling more refreshed for each day would have been preferred.😬

I don’t buy makeup, alcohol, smoke or travel so I buy art supplies to keep me sane. When I am in an art rut or I am looking for inspiration I then try something new. The last thing I tried was drawing with a dip pen and I love it so much that I practice every morning with my first coffee before I do any other type of art.

I am so sorry for your loss:(
Hey Lindsay, While you were in France, we were in your fine country, we just got back from Hollywood, CA flying Qantas economy with so much food on the 14hr trip. I went a little stir crazy with the time aspect. I went to Blicks, joined, and got some great art supplies, which I can't get in Australia, by any means! So, I came back with lots of watercolour blocks, sketch books, and watercolours. Would you believe my 900 dollar haul, would have been 2 to 4 times more per item back here, and it was all discounted! I squealed with delight, and felt like a kid in a candy store. QUESTIONs; I recall you saying before your New York trip, that you are not good with travelling.... So, how did you go with the flights, travel, carrier, and time in the aircraft? Did you go to the Louvre, and see Mona Lisa? In kindred spirit, Eliza Most Beautiful Day is Today! Saturday 25th of May 2024; 9:30am Sydney Australia xx

The flights were fine. It didn't bother me at all. The trip back felt much longer because I was so wiped out. I downloaded some books on my phone to read on the flights, and it was good to relax and do nothing. I didn't go to Paris. I flew into Toulouse so no Louvre. We did go to the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi tho and it was cool. I probably should have stayed longer (or arrived earlier) to do more sightseeing, but this was a full 10 days as it was. Glad you found some deals!
I'm glad you had a good time in France. My experience has always been that if you make an effort, people are lovely and many speak English, too.

As a French from the south, l’m glad you enjoyed your retreat so much 😊 If you're thinking about ever doing one in Japan, I would recommend Shikoku, one of the 4 main island but completely forgotten by tourism (I don't know why). It's in the countryside but still accessible, tons of history, monuments, temples, pilgrimages, nature, and it's a very important area for art and literature, in front of the Seto sea where every island creates art and has museums (Naoshima is one of them and a top destination for art lovers in Japan), and there's an art triennale that is gaining a lot of popularity. I live there and honestly don't understand how it's not more famous, on the other hand I'm not going to complain about how peaceful it is compared to our neighbors on the other side of the sea, Osaka and Kyoto 😝 They have it hard 🤣

Food in other countries is different. I was in Vancouver Canada recently and during my visit we went a couple restaurants that I go to at home occasionally. One was A&W. The root beer advertised it was made with cane sugar and tasted way better than our USA A&W root beer, and tasted awesome and the meal tasted better than the USA version. The other restaurant was iHop and I go there cause they have a gluten friendly pancake. Their pancakes were so much thicker than what I get back home in the USA. They also held together and didn’t becomes a crumbly mess after taking them back to out Air B&B than what I get back home. This brought up a conversation about food in general between my husband and myself about the quality of the food we eat in the USA. I don’t eat out much because because of diet restrictions that our restaurant industry in the USA just don’t address or don’t care about, really sad. I am so glad you had such a great time in France. I hope you do have future retreats. Your a great teacher. Maybe the timing will be better next time and I can join in on the fun. Take Care.

Hi Lindsay so glad you had a great time. Just saying you give great advice but you can't do that if you cant try products, which means you are justified in what you buy. I just love that you do not over hype products and are very honest. Gives me faith when I am purchasing and also lets me know if I am justified in my purchase or if I already have something that will work. So thank you and please stop doubting yourself. :) You are a fantastic teacher, give great advice and endless inspiration. Thank you.

I'm so glad yall had an amazing time in France!! I'm also loving your year of favorites as it's inspiring so many ideas for my favorites and teaching me new tips and tricks!! I came across a new to me brand on Amazon called Brusarth. When I went looking for some new waterbrushes. They have a set that look exactly like the Derwent one with the push button that you have only they are pink and I paid $8.99 for the set of 4. I just received them last week and so far they seem to me to be the same quality you have expressed in the Derwent brand. Of course I still favor regular watercolor brushes with cups of water. I almost felt a little guilty for finding and buying them so cheap, less than half the price. But I guess that's just the way it goes. I do the same thing at the grocery store by buying the store brand inside of the name brand. I also saw that they have several other art supplies so I grabbed a set of they brush pen caligraphy fine liner set as they were about a $1 a pen. They are good, but I would the name brands are the way to go as these ten to bleed through although if you looking to use them to line over watercolor then maybe it would brake the bank using them on the rougher paper and save the brand name for the smooth fancy writing. I'm currently not encouraging you to buy them, but I know your always curious about look a like brands and their quality. And if there ever was an exact match or copy the water brushes sure seem like one. Although, I don't own the Derwent set the truly compare them head to head. Here's the link in case you want to at least look at them. Thanks for sharing your creativeness with the world! I'm incredibly grateful! www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0CH5CQNGF?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_image

Loved hearing about your trip. Can't wait to see the haul video. A friend and I met in Ohio every year for years going to The Art Continuum in Cleveland and then to Stampaway in Cincinnati. She always came with someone and every night at the hotel we would show each other what we bought for the day. I miss those days.

Hahaha ha 😆
I can understand that you would be exhausted. I used to travel every couple of months to our European offices. The trips were for a week and I am a bad traveler. I cannot adjust to the time change and would sleep terribly, the days were long and when I got home I would also be exhausted. It was just not great at all.
