Explore the captivating story of the Dassault Mercure 100, a French airliner designed to revolutionize short-haul travel. Join us on a journey through the ambitious vision, technological innovations, and unforeseen challenges that marked its rise and eventual fall in the aviation industry.
In this video, we delve into the rich history of French aviation, highlighting iconic milestones like the first English Channel crossing and the development of the Concorde. Witness the birth of the Mercure 100 in the 1960s, as Dassault, renowned for its jet fighters, takes a daring leap into commercial jet airliners.
Discover the Mercure's impressive features, from its cutting-edge automatic landing system and heads-up display to its high-speed capabilities and unique passenger cabin innovations. Learn how it soared past the Boeing 737-200 in speed, climb rate, and passenger capacity.
However, the Mercure's tale takes an unexpected turn as we uncover the fundamental flaw that led to its commercial failure. Despite its technological prowess, the Mercure was designed for short-haul flights in a market that demanded long-range versatility. Airlines, including Air France, turned away, leaving Dassault grappling with financial challenges exacerbated by the 1973 Oil Crisis.
Witness the subsequent attempt with the Mercure 200c, the struggle to secure American interest, and the project's eventual cancellation. Despite its commercial setback, the Mercure 100 left an indelible mark on aviation safety, achieving a perfect record in its 21-year career.
Join us as we reflect on the lessons learned from the Mercure's journey and its role in paving the way for Airbus. While a commercial failure, the Mercure's legacy lives on, reminding us of the importance of adaptability in the ever-evolving aviation landscape. I last saw one of these at Cherbourg in 1991 on the apron loading up. I thought it was a 737. Great video

A few decades later, another 737 killer was launched. Unlike the plane in the video, it actually became successful.

I can imagine a lot of lessons were learnt from the mistakes in designing a very niche airplane like the Mercure, but it's a beautiful machine nevertheless.

Interestingly, many of the engineers who worked on the Mercure ended up going to work with Airbus when Airbus was studying starting around 1978 the Joint European Transport (JET) research project. That study resulted in what became the Airbus A320, a plane that (like the 737) became adaptable in small size (A318, A319) and larger size (A321) versions, and soon will push the range out to an amazing 4,700 nautical miles (more than enough for transatlantic flying).
