France was the host of the first European championship organized in Euro 1960. But they could not participate in any of the European championships that were held later. They wanted to have a say in world football with their team from Platini, Battiston, Rampillon and Tigana. Euro 1980 was before them now. Passing and qualifying was their only goal, but they had a strong rival in the group. Czechoslovakia won the 1976 European championship!

A star was born then Bernd Schuster, probably the best midfielder in german soccer history. But he quitted to play for germany after a short carriere and became worldclass player with Barca.

Yeah Right... Between 1968 and 1980 France never qualified for any competition (apart from the 78 World Cup), were knocked out at the start of a competition and didn't win a thing. In the last 20 years they've won 2 world cups and 1 european cup, as well as several finals and semi-finals.

@@elem2992 They were brilliant in the 1982 World Cup and reached the semi-finals, won the European Championship in 1984 and again reached the WC semi-finals in 1986...those were brilliant teams that played a more attractive style than the recent teams (and still actually represented France).

@@sottovoce4626 True...they were brillant during 4 years and then nothin until 1996, 10 empty years, with pitiful eliminations in European tournaments, and no qualification for 2 World Cups in 90 and 94! With barely no significant French players (except Ginola and Cantona). In any case, it's clear that the initial message wasn't really about sport.

I am sorry that France no longer exists. she was a beautiful national, with French players. I don't know what happened next, I think someone banned the team and in their place they made Senegal or Nigeria play, who already have their national team. 100 fois mieux quand elle jouait au Parc Le stade de France ne m a jamais plu Le parc peut même tremblé il gronde Mais cela c etait avant La mort des tribunes fut l erreur de faire rentrerles familles car le football a besoin de supporters pas de spectateurs

Back then it was common to call them Czechs meaning also the Slovaks. If fact, noone thought about the mere hypothesis the country could be broken up.
