Framing The Roof Alone! OFF-GRID Stone House in the Woods, ep.02.
#stonehouse #offgrid #logcabin
Hello everyone! This is the second part of the series about the restoration of an old and abandoned stone house built in the 1950s. After preparing for the following works in the previous video, my first and most important task is to build the roof and protect the building from further deterioration. So I will show you how I made a wooden frame for the roof of my stone house in the forest off-grid. I intentionally left the old wooden beams that were hand-hewn by my ancestors because they are oak and so hard that not even a nail can be hammered into them. Therefore, you will see how I made a wooden structure by attaching it to the existing oak beams to get a quality preparation on which I mount the roof in the next part of this series. I used a 20 cm turbo screw to fasten it. Due to the hardness of the oak, I had to dip each screw in grease to make it easier to get into the beam, good trick, try it if you find yourself in a similar situation. You will also learn how to properly install gutter hooks and how to protect a wooden roof frame from pest invasion.

For me its a pity these multi-talented craftsmen have to hide their identity and think that if they use the USA as their location, they are better than they already are!!!
My friend, because of your precision and craftsmanship I would follow you if you only built dog houses. I am so glad you are doing this and bringing this home of your ancestors back to life. I’m certain you will make them proud. Thank you

Repurposing those beams will add great character to the house. I watched a gentleman the other night repurpose beams from a barn that was built in the late 1700's. he counted the rings and his best guess since it wasn't the entire tree was it started growing in the 1500's. Amazing to think a tree that was cut by some dude in the early 1700's and in the mid 2020's and the lumber is still be used. Someone refresh me on why we stopped building with timber? Don't say its not renewable..................

Good morning from Maine (USA). I enjoyed watching the care you put in to measure everything just right. But the best part was how you were able to salvage the ancient oak that has hardened over time. The "new" building will always have the "old" to remind you of the past. Best of luck as you proceed!

Yay, another video of the stone house series!!!! I've been enjoying your videos for a while now. If it's not prying I have some questions. All your builds turn out awesome, so I was curious are you self taught, learned from family, or learned your skills on the job? Will you keep track of the hours you spend on fixing up this cottage? I would be interested in knowing when you finish about how many hours went into it. Final question, does your significant other/spouse ever visit your builds to see the work you have done? Thanks for the hours of relaxing and entertaining videos, and all the great doggy footage.

Outstanding Luxon! Had an utterly wretched day at work, just got home, kicked off the boots and cracked open a bottle of whisky and now am about to decompress watching a guy rebuild a humble cottage into another of his masterpieces. This one is special because it's YOURS and you have a connection to its history. The "old world" craftsmanship and attention to detail is sadly lacking nowadays, you preserving as much of it as possible is a fine tribute to those folk that spent so much time and effort in building it in the first place. Can't wait to see what it becomes as you progress, please give the beautiful pup of yours a hug and a treat, she's the best.

It's a fine thing to see a family property come back together again. There was a time when American farms needed hired men for a variety of tasks. Larger farms provided homes for their workers. Along came mechanization and those homes stood empty. My uncles' family had real homes for their working families; not sharecroppers' homes. Later, these were repurposed to store whatever needed storing. (They kept almost everything, from furniture to seasoning wood when trees had to come down.)
